I was wondering if anyone has had any luck freezing tofu? I would like to buy more than one package at a time, but I won't if it'll just go to waste.

Thanks :)

i saw a post on here about it before. i think it was on the tofu spoiling thread...

anyway i think they suggested cutting it in chunks and freezing them in a large ziplock bag so you can just take out whatever you need....

i'll try to find the link

I freeze mine all the time. It makes the texture better. I just stick it, package and all into the freezer. Then before I am ready to use it, I pull it out and leave it in the fridge to thaw!

Thanks for your help. I bought one package to use now and one to freeze, I'll see how I like it before I freeze more of it.

Are you freezing it for the sake of preservation? The shelf-life of packaged tofu, refridgerated, is pretty long.

The only reason i freeze it is to give it more texture.

Freezing tofu is supposed to make the texture different. More chewy- meatlike.
i'm curious, let me know how freezing it goes!

It does make it more chewy, but sometimes more crumbly and "drier" too.

I freeze tofu all the time, it works great.

If the tofu is in water, drain it and slice/cut it into the desired shape before freezing it.

Is it like more like veggie crumblers then?
hm I have tofu in the fridge now. I should just try it.
Thanks for the advice

As the only vegan in the family, and not a big tofu person, the only way for me to have tofu around is to freeze it. (I only eat it once a week or so.) The texture *is* chewier, but not excessively so... it loses that 'sponge-like' quality you get in tofu that hasn't been extensively pressed or frozen. The colour also changes (it darkens slightly) so if you freeze your tofu and see this, don't worry! I find that squeeze'n'freeze is a great way to have tofu on hand whenever I want it.

Freezing is perfectly acceptable. It changes the texture of the tofu so it is spongier. I buy a load of blocks if there is a sale, and cube them and freeze them. You can also freeze tempeh, and seitan. At a small health food place here, the lady who runs it takes the tempeh that is about to expire and freezes it and sells it for half-price. Its okay as long as you use it within a few days after you thaw it.
