I think it's a matter of location for most people. It's tough (and less environmental) to lug our cars around just to get organic produce. Community is pretty close to me, but I've never been there. =( I'm considering going soon though.

Oh and about the Byblos... we get the massive ones for I think 60 or 70 cents. One time they had 12 bags that were expiring that day so they just gave them to us for free. It's fantastic. We buy them in huge amounts and just freeze 'em.

I went to Planet Organic over the weekend, and it seems pretty nice there. The prices were a little high, but I found the Guiltless Gourmet Tortilla Chips for only $1.89, whereas Safeway was selling them for $2.99! Other products were a little expensive, but some things that are on sale are great. I saw Amy's pizza on sale, but I didn't buy them. I just bought the Tortilla Chips - something for me to indulge in. -lol-

Planet Organic is great when they have sales. I always stock up on whatever's on sale. Like this month, Almond Milk is on sale so I bought a huge case! And peanut butter too.

I find that for all those "special" items that you would find at Safeway or anywhere else, Planet Organic generally has cheaper prices. I'm big on Nature's Path Flakes cereals, and they're $7.99 at Planet Organic as opposed to $9 at Safeway and Coop and $9.29 at Superstore.

I'm also looking for some low-calorie options as well. Has anyone been to Diabetic Depot for some of their products?

Low calorie options for what? If you compare labels I'm sure you can find low calorie options for most foods.

A friend of mine just started working as at the Community Foods by Chinook.
:vebo: :bobo: :nana:

I am hoping this will benefit me in some way. :p
(At least getting the "inside scoop" on sales and stuff)

Oh, mainly for pita breads and tortillas.

I haven't heard of any low cal pitas or tortillas, but I know that the "Eating Right" ones at Safeway are about 150 cal each, as are their "Stonehedge" brand tortillas.

A 50 gram whole grain pita is about 150 calories too which isn't too bad.

Synergy,
that's so awesome that your friend works there! You can probably get some kind of discount. Nice!

I think I found a vegetarian restaurant in Calgary that I never knew about before, it's a fully vegetarian (and possibly vegan) Vietnamese restaurant called the "White Oak II" somewhere downtown near Chinatown.

I just saw it on a list of Calgary vegetarian restaurants. I thought I knew about all of them, but apparently not.

Has anyone ever eaten there? Does it still exist?

I've never heard of it. I checked a few websites and it says that it's vegan friendly (woo!!)

http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=5290

I think it might still be open, the last review on the link above is from August 2007. You can probably phone to check if it's still open because it got pretty good reviews, so it sounds like it's worth checking out.

I ate there in July 07, it's really good! Similar to Buddha's Veggie but much cheaper and a lot tinier. AFAIK it's completely vegan.

I've heard of it, but I've never been there. I don't usually think of going to that area to eat. Every review I've seen is pretty good.

Cool... I will have to check it out sometime. I'm not a huge fan of Budda's though - too salty and fried for my liking.

I've never been to Buddha... but Chinese food really turns me off. Way too fatty/greasy. Yuck! But I'm all up for Vietnamese, so I'll definitely try this place out myself.

I have to say, out of all the veggie restaurants in Calgary I've been too, the only ones I want to go back to frequently are The Coup, and The Sunflower Cafe. All the rest are too greasy, heavy, salty.

I totally agree with you. The coup rocks.

Yeahhh....when I first became a veg*n I was really excited to go to Buddha's Veggie restaurant. I even took a few omni friends with me because I had heard it was so good. And it was terrible! It wasn't even because it was fried or unhealthy that I didn't like it...I just didn't like the flavors or anything. Maybe my tastes have changed now that I have been a vegan for a while now??

And now that I live in Edmonton I love a Chinese vegan restaurant here (Padmanadi), although I only go about once a month because it isn't very healthy.

Oh! And I had an awful experience at the Coup last time I went (I am kind of whiny today, aren't I?) I waited an hour and a half before getting any food and when I finally did get the food, it wasn't very good at all. Also, I found that the music was even louder than usual and so I had to yell to even talk to my boyfriend. It was very sad. But it was really good all the other times I went so I will just chalk it up to it being a bad day in general.

I would definitely chalk it up to a bad day. They are normally very, very quick with their food service. I know that the music is louder on the nights they have a live DJ, so it could be that could be why. I find they have better service during the day time, or early on in the evening, rather than later at night.

I <3 The Coup.

So I tried to eat at the White Oak II restaurant tonight... and we couldn't freaking find the place! :brood: We wandered around the entire part Chinatown where it was supposed to be for like half an hour, going into every little weird mall and there was no sign of it...

We were looking along 3rd ave between 1st and center, which is where it should have been, so either it's gone or we are idiots and couldn't see it (both are possibilities) :) It can't be a well advertised place if it does exist.

The good news is that we ended up eating at a random little sushi place down there that was actually really, really good. They had a wonderful avocado inside out roll.

If you can't report on White Oaks, you have to at least report on the sushi place. What was it called???

(I love inside out avocado rolls!)

You know... I can't really say for sure  I honestly didn't take note of the name (we were rather desperate when we found the place). It's inside a large Asian mall on the corner of 4th ave and 1st street. I will let you know if the name comes to me. But I could find it again for sure if you take me with you :D

But it was a great restaurant - Japanese people were eating there (which is a good sign I think). I had edamame, yam tempura, avocado roll and a veggie roll - everything was fantastic, and the place was nice inside.

Deal. :p
Any excuse for sushi. Now I live close to Globefish, so I've been frequenting them fairly often (they have this amazing cold cooked spinach salad in a sesame sauce), but it's always good to branch out with the sushi.
