I'm ba-ack... :)

Potlucks are fun, but only with a lot of people. A fun summer thing would be a vegan potluck BBQ! If there are less people, a restaurant might be best. I'll go out for South Indian on any day with anyone. I can't tell you how badly I missed Asian food when I was in Europe.
But apparently not Wednesday, so I have to wait until Friday? I feel gypped.

I love potlucks, and they're pretty decent as long as there is a variety of food - my friends and I usually do them once once a month (not vegan, but usually enough for me to eat) and there's really only 7 or 8 of us that are regular.

Either way, let's get planning.

Really???

I found their recipes to be perfect. Not too many flavors going on, but enough to still be interesting. I suppose it depends on what kind of food you like. ...
i too didn't really find anything that stood out on the menu and it didn't seem complicated..ended up having the dragon bowl which was ok.

i'll give it another chance (then again i was quite preoccupied that night as i was intending to end "relations" with someone and thinking more about how to go about doing it than the menu..hey, this belongs in the relationship forum..:wall: ). now back on topic..:sunny:

Welcome back!!!!!!!!

How was your trip?? Or would you rather tell me about it over some Indian food?

That's a no brainer: you'll have to fatten me up on Sambar and Dosas to get my stories out of me!

My South Indian place has an all day buffet on Saturdays.

Sweet, I haven't been for Indian in Ages.

I have a wedding this weekend. Maybe lunch next Saturday?
Another little meet-up?

vata07 and Synergy, I wasn't able to place my finger on why I felt the menu was limited to me but now I have and it's the fact that many of the ingredients I cannot digest. Dressings, sauces, dips, curry, hummus and cheese make me nauseous/sick. I haven't tried pea shoots, edamame beans and quinoa but I'm such a picky eater I'm scared of ordering something I might not eat and will likely be thrown out. I always feel horrible when food is wasted.

By the way, Synergy, what part of Europe did you go to? I'm going to Spain next week and I'm worried there won't be many things for me to eat, especially since the local cuisine seems to be big on seafood (or creature food as I like to call it and I don't consume that).

And I have a question I'd like to ask everyone. Are there any vegetarian activity/social groups in the Calgary? Thanks in advance!

I would normally say yes in a heartbeat, but the Sled Island Festival is next Saturday. I'm still in the process of determining which I love more: Mogwai or $90.

I will have to verify this myself, but according to the old menu I picked up, the buffet is on Sundays as well, so I would prefer to do dinner on Sunday. Even if it's not buffet, we can order off the menu. How does that work for you?

And Synergy, I am also curious to know where you went in Europe :stinkeye:

Luckily, I too have been to Europe, and to Spain, but only Barcelona. I found an organic vegetarian place tucked into the back of the giant market off Las Ramblas downtown. I had some vegetarian payaya that was fantastic. Some of the Tapas is vegetarian (but not much vegan). The rest of my time in Spain I think I just had pasta. And bread. There was never a shortage of white bread in Europe... <shudder>

Unfortunately, my Grandpa passed away last night and I will be heading back to Saskatchewan for the funeral, then staying for the weekend. I'm free tomorrow, otherwise my next available time is the 11/12th.

Ah.... I see. That's too bad, especially about dressings, sausces, dips, curryand hummus. Those are basically the staples of my diet :p

I've been to Spain, France, Greece, England and Ireland.

When I was in Spain, I wasn't a vegetarian, so I'm not the best one to give you advice there. Skylark, one of the mods lived in Spain for 6 months though. If you PM her, I'm sure she'd be happy to give you some ideas! She also just got back from 6 months in Bolivia!

When I was in Spain, I did eat a lot of things like hummus, pita, olives, etc and also some of the best Chinese food of my life, strangely enough. We were backpacking on a shoestring, so we often went into grocery stores to buy food, which was actually far easier than trying to order things in a restaurant.

The other European countries weren't too bad for eating veg. France is easier for a lacto ovo - I almost lived off of baguettes, cheese, fresh fruit and wine.
I also speak French, so that took a lot of the trouble out of it.

England and Ireland are full of veg*ans, so it's not really an issue unless you are way out in the boonies.

You should check out www.happycow.net! They have restaurant and veggie clubs from all over the world listed!

I haven't really seen any activity from the Calgary Vegetarian Society in quite some time. I know there are some vegan cooking classes occasionally at the Co-op downtown, and we're trying to do some more frequent meet ups with VB'ers.

Sorry I've been MIA lately! I've had a lot going on!
So I finally SOLD MY HOUSE a matter of days ago. I would love to come to the next meeting, whenever it may be!

Well, does anyone have any ideas as to where/when?

I know at the last meet up we were talking about going down to Open Sesame, which has amazing asian food, tons of cheap veggie options. It's just south of Glenmore on Mcleod Tr.

There has also been talk of an Indian food meet up too.
I'm down for anything.

Weekday evenings definitely work best for me.... I work a lot of Weekend nights.

OK, well that's not too late for me - but any day after the 15th works for me (that's when my house sale closes).

I'm worried it might be too late for a lot of restaurants though....

I could always just meet you guys for a drink or something though.

Wow, I'm way behind. That's what happens when you get busy!

The 18th should work for me, though there's a small chance that I will be flying to Victoria either the 18th or 19th. We'll wait and see.
