Really? Have you been to the bluffs by the Mississippi yet? It's so pretty there. :)

I don't really know the city well enough yet but I will sure make a note of seeing it. There are so many farmers around here and I haven't found one person who understands moral vegans.

Welcome to Wisconsin Sorrow! Ya, Eau Claire is in farm/sportsman land for sure, but hey, it's not to far a drive to Minneapolis, also there is the University in Eau Claire, perhaps you can find some vegan support there? I'll look around and see if I can find any other info for you.

Wanda, thanks for the info but I can't make it either, I coach DI on Thurs. nights.

Hi Sorrow, I'm only a quick (hour or so) drive west on I-94 from you so if you are every feeling the need for the company of another vegan, jot me a note. We can find somewhere to have lunch or something. :)

Hello Wisconsiners...
I will be in Green Bay during the first week of August. Is anyone interested in a VB get-together?

Sally, I'll have to get in touch with you closer to the date, we have a place up-north that we drive through Green Bay to get to, perhaps we will be in the area in August.

Just went to the new restaurant Chin's. Very vegan-friendly and a huge selection of vegan dishes. The staff has been completely instructed on how people can order their meals vegan. And that in Wisconsin! :)

Wanda, where is it? I haven't heard of it.

Wanda, where is it? I haven't heard of it.
It's on Oakland Avenue. A little bit south of Noodles & Company.
On the sign it says: 'Eat in or wok out'. :)

Thanks, Wanda. :) Is this an asian restaurant?

Wanda

I think it's kind of a crossing between an Asian restaurant and Noodles.
They have both rice (white and brown!) and pasta dishes.
They also have vegan spring roles.
It's worth a visit!

The Outpost has started selling veal.
The Alliance for Animals is asking us all to boycott them!

This message is from the Alliance for Animals:

"It has been brought to our attention that the Outpost
"Natural" Foods Store now sells veal. They rationalize
this by saying that it is "California Kind" veal,
which is marketed to "the caring consumer". Below, I
have a brief background on this form of veal. Please
call and/or write the Outpost and express your sadness
and rage. I have heard that many people have been
calling and revoking their memberships because of
this. Please let them know that you will not purchase
anything from them as long as they carry veal.

I spoke to the meat department at Outpost today and
the guy basically read a few sentences off a sheet of
paper (the same I have printed below). He told me that
they carry veal because many people were asking for
it. He said that animal rights are okay, but this is
how animals are raised for food, just like cows and
pigs. He went on to tell me that these baby cows
don't feel any pain when they die. "They aren't
clubbed over the head like they used to be. They have
a painless death." When I asked how they are killed,
he had no answer. I asked him "how can you say they
don't feel pain if you don't know how they are
killed?" He then told me that if I want to argue
animal rights, I need to call Outpost management and
hung up on me.

I was very calm the entire time. He sounded nervous
and strung out. I imagine he and other employees are
having to defend this situation to many customers.
Please help us out with this. It will only take a few
minutes.

I got this off the Strauss Veal website. Strauss is a
veal and lamb company right here in Franklin, WI that
is distributing California Kind veal (Contact Greg
Martin at 1-800-562-7775). I am not sure if they
distribute it to Outpost. This is what they have to
say about the baby cows they slaughter:

Under the sunny California sky, ?California Kind??
calves live outdoors and are never tethered. Only the
healthiest calves are hand-selected from local
dairies. Each is fed mother?s colostrum for at least
48 hours from birth. Over the next several weeks, the
calves are transitioned from individual outdoor
hutches where their health is closely monitored to
group housing. The process of adjusting to a group
social environment takes place entirely outdoors.

Group-raised ?California Kind?? calves receive extra
tender care and attention. Every detail is focused to
maximize their comfort and well-being. ?California
Kind?? calves are able to move around freely and
interact socially with each other. Their diet consists
of roughage allowing them to develop their rumen the
way Mother Nature intended.

-I am hoping to speak to Strauss tomorrow to find out
what "individual hutches" are, what happens to the
not-so-healthy baby cows that aren't hand picked, and
why they can't be kept with their mothers. The guy I
spoke to today didn't know about it.

Outpost keeps getting worse & worse. I actually need to go there tomorrow for a few things that I can't find around here. I'll definitely be letting them know my thoughts on this. Thanks for the info, Wanda.

Well, I just came back from the Outpost & they didn't even have the few items that I wanted. They used to carry so many things that I would buy and now it's not even worth the trip.

It was really busy there and I'm not in a good mood at all today, so I ended up emailing them a little while ago about the veal instead of seeking out a manager. It'll be interesting to see what they say if they respond. I'll post it if they do.

Yep, I hate going all the way there to find they're out of what I want! Especially when it's stuff I can't get anywhere else. :furious:

I'm still going to be in Green Bay August 5-8th. Would love to meet some VBers while I'm there! Any suggestions on where to eat? I'll be staying at the Regency by the KI Convention Center.

Radio station 94.5 FM (WKTI) is sponsoring a contest (http://www.wkti.com/contests.asp) this summer in which people can submit their best veal recipe.

It doesn't look like they're having it anymore, Wanda. At least I couldn't find it on their site. I'm hoping they had enough complaints that they decided to cancel it, or even better they didn't get many (or any!) recipes in.

You're right. It seems to have disappeared.
And I was going to write them this great letter.
I hope they cancelled it!

Sally, the only place I have ever eaten in Green Bay is Subway so I can’t really recommend any restaurants. There is a vegetarian restaurant less than a mile from where you are staying called Kavarna. Here is a link for it http://www.vegdining.com/GetRest.cfm?rk=US-WI-GREE-KAVAR I have no idea how old the link is or if the place is still in business but I’ve always meant to check it out. I will be in Green Bay on the 6th. I have to stop up there early in the morning; I don’t know if I will be able to stay long enough to meet up or not? What is your schedule like that day? Pm me
