Sarah! Remember that Ethiopian place we went to for dinner? They had a fire weeks ago, and don't seem to be reopening anytime soon! I really wish I'd taken you to Meskerem--much better all around.

You wouldn't happen to remember the place in Chinatown that Warren took you, would you?

Just so we're clear, you both realize that *I* am Warren, right? Sarah, my twinnie, you're officially stalking me, but I'd expect nothing less from you, and I'm grinning from ear to ear.

Lisa, I have no idea what the /name/ of the place Sarah and I went, but it's across the street from Tony Chengs, and is of reasonable size - it's not one the hole-in-the-wall carry-outs. Although that place has the best fake-meat selection, it's not the best chinese food. I prefer Eat First, which is on the next block and on the opposite (Cheng's) side of H Street. Full Kee is really good, too, and is rather authentically-Mandarin but not as veggie-friendly. A good number of main dishes, but not vegetarian apps or soups.

While I'm on the topic, Rice on 14th (around 14th and Corcoran I guess - next to HR-57) allegedly does very good Thai-fusion (whatever /that/ means). I'm sure it's no Bangkok Bistro, but I'll be checking that out soon.

NO WAY?!?! YOU'RE WARREN?????? That's hilarious!

I agree with you on Eat First--EXCELLENT. I believe it was the first place I ever had lunch in Chinatown--before I even lived in DC. It was on the Washingtonian's list of "Cheap Eats," and for five bucks I had more wonderful food than I could finish. We recently discovered a joint on U St that has several TVP chicken dishes--and they deliver, baby.

Haven't been to Rice, but it's just down the street from me. I've heard good things about it as well. Major construction project going on next door, so make sure you go well after quitting time.

And I recognized your dogs, too, Sarah! Where's the pug? Or whatever you just added? Didn't you get a third mutt???

Lisa - the restaurant in question is called Chinatown Garden at 618 H street. I was at Eat First last night, so I looked at the name. Not the best food, but good fake meats. I had the General Tso's Bean Curd at Eat First - so good!!!

This is just too freakin' funny. I was wondering when Sarah would come back and see this. LOL

Thanks for the tip! I'm sure you've been to City Lights in Dupont? Had the General Tso's tofu there last week--yum yum. AND they have brown rice. Bonus! We've been getting delivery from this place called Peking Express (of course it is, right?) on U St--they've got about six or seven chicken TVP dishes. Alas, no brown rice, but really good.

They probably got sick of saying "no, it's not first street."

That is funny though.

Is anyone going to Keggs and Eggs March 17th? The DC 101 St. Patrick's Day party.

Obviously I won't be eating eggs or drinking isinglas filled Guiness, but there must be something fun I can do there. LOL

Okay my sister and I are going ... at least to the city. If not this particular party, just some kind of breakfast and brew.

Wow! Hadn't heard of Kegs & Eggs so I looked it up--can't imagine starting drinking at that hour, but hey, why not?

Anyone tried Veridian yet? Do tell!

Also, any restaurant ideas for a nice birthday dinner? Doesn't have to be strictly veg, just reasonably veg-friendly. Some place a little romantic, without people sitting 12 inches away? Preferably something near a place with live jazz. Was considering Rice.

Mai Thai is a very nice restaurant with a great view of the Potomac River located in Old Town Alexandria. They have a website but I'm not allowed to post it yet.... but it's something like this: maithai dot us

They have a vegetarian menu.

Thanks, Sande. Will have to give it a try (if we ever make it to that side of the river LOL). Their spinach mushroom entree sounds d-lish!

We wound up going to Rice on 14th. All I can say is WOW-WEE! If you haven't been, GO! Nice (but not extensive) selection. Best Pad Thai I've ever had. And you absolutely must must must try the Pumpkin Empanadas! Not much on atmosphere, but the food is super fresh and oh-so-flavorful yet subtle. Did you ever make it there, Warren? Um, I mean Trent Steele? :)

Somehow, I have not. I think it's because /everyone/ tells me I should go there. I feel like I have set expectations too high. Plus, isn't it "Thai Fusion"?! I don't even know what that means! I'll have to try it soon...

Had the vegan chocolate cake at Busboys & Poets. Pretty good stuff, though it's no Cakelove!!

Had the vegan chocolate cake at Busboys & Poets.

I can only imagine what THAT cost. :stinkeye: Sorry, that place just really ticks me off--HOUSE red wine at $8.50 a glass? Some "neighborhood gathering place." Me thinks Andy is in a little over his head this time.

Dear dear Warren, don't let Rice's popularity keep you from delighting in a pumpkin empanada! And as for the fusion thing, their menu is divided into three sections--one is the fusiony/original stuff; one is traditional Thai; and the other (our section) is called Healthy Green. For the price, you can't go wrong here. As I said, it's not the most atmospheric of restaurants, but they make a solid meal for a decent price.

VSDC's restaurant visit this month is to the much-loved Meskerem in Adams Morgan on the 22nd. That's always a treat. Speaking of treats, they're going down to Sticky Fingers afterwards for dessert. Anyone planning to go?

Who's going down??

Sorry I couldn't help it...

So VSDC does "meetups" per se? I think the only thing I read from their website months and months ago was about potlucks at Rock Creek Park. Which I always wanted to go, but would have felt weird carrying a container of food for an hour on the train. LOL..

:naughty: Good one! LOL

Yeah, they do monthly (usually) restaurant visits in addition to the picnics, potlucks, book clubs, etc. Last month was Mandalay, the Burmese place in Silver Spring, but I had to bail at the last minute. Too bad, cuz I've really been wanting to try that place. Anyone been?

I can see what you mean about carrying a food container that long on the train. Maybe you could stick it in a McD's bag so you wouldn't stand out? :p

VSDC has a fair number of activities. They usually have a restaurant visit each month, and there is usually a singles party about once a month as well. I really like the summer potlucks, as there is usually an impressive array of awesome food, and Rock Creek Park is a great setting.

I strongly encourage all DC-area people to join, as the organization does good work to promote the veg lifestyle here in this area, and you get a 10% discount at a number of local restaurants and stores with a membership card.

Is anyone planning to attend the event at Meskerem (and more importantly, Sticky Fingers  ) ?

Anyone been?I went to Mandalay once when it was still in College Park. The food is very good with a nice array of veg choices. I haven't been there since they relocated to Silver Spring but have been meaning to.

I hear ya, but the way I see it, that's the neighborhood, now. And besides (and more importantly, perhaps) look at all the nunces in there taking half a couch to write a thousand emails, shop for a new pair of Puma sleakers, and browse Manhunt and Nerve over a cup of coffee. They gotta make their money somewhere, lest another Cosi moves in *puke*.

Greetings,
It doesn't look like this board is very active but I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm a male vegan, 28, moving to the DC area for a job this week and I'm looking for veg-friendly accomodations. I'm interested in a place within close walking distance to the Metro and good markets.

Please let me know if you or someone you know may have a room available. Or, if you know of a good place to search. I'm already utilizing Craigslist as well.

I'll pass along more details with your response. Cheers!

Stephen

It's Restaurant Week here in DC and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with being able to find a restaurant with vegan options other than Vegetate. My bf, not a veg, was interested in going but I'm not sure where I'll be able to find something to eat. Thanks!

On Rockville Pike in MD there is a veg*n restaurant called the Vegetable Garden. It's very good!
