Well, I'm in Indiana right now but next week I'm heading for vacation in Washington state with my fiance! Yay! I love the area and we do plan to move there permanently in the (hopefully) near future.

The last time I was there was well over a year ago now, and I wasn't vegetarian at that time, so I'm not too sure what the veg scene is like there (though I can't imagine it being any worse than it is here.) Any particular restraunts I might want to visit or grocery stores that have a good selection of veg friendly items? We're going to be staying in Tenino (just a bit south of Olympia) but I think we're also going to be taking a trip to eastern Washington, around the Yakima area. We'll probably be spending a day or so in Seattle and lots of time in Olympia.

Thanks!

I'm moving to Seattle, WA early June.
So excited :D I think WA will be much cooler than PA, hopefully more left/veggie friendly than PA!

Thought I'd send us in Washington to the top.

I just moved to the Seattle metro area last week. Made the mistake of moving sight unseen and decided to live near work in Auburn. Realized after moving that Auburn definitely ain't my style, though I'll benefit from the sub 2-miler commute to work every day. Luckily I signed up for a 6-month lease and will undoubtedly be moving to Seattle or very near so at the end of it. Now, the 150 bus line goes right down to my work as does the Sounder. Does anyone know the usefulness or effectiveness of taking either on a work commute out of Seattle to south King County cities each day? I figure if I'm right on either the bus or Sounder line, or both, then I'd have it made.

Made it up to the city on Saturday and spent the day exploring Seattle. I ended the night at Neumo's to see Camera Obscura perform. It was heavenly. God, I love this city.

Welcome to Washington jeffrey. :hi:

I'm afraid I can't give much help on the bus info, as I live in Vancouver, but I thought I'd offer you a hello at least.

Ah, yeah, well I came from Southern California and before that Arizona, so I'm hoping the heat didn't follow me up here. One of the reasons I moved here is because I'm one of those strange ones who prefers overcast skies.

Sun, sun, go away
Come again some other day
We want to go outside and play
Come again some other day.

I'm crashing close to there, in Enumclaw, with some hillbillies. PM me, or something. Maybe us newbies can benefit each other in some way.

Sure, Coug. I'll send a message.

On another note, I went up to the University District and had a vegan "My Favorite Mushroom" pizza at Pizza Pi. It was otherworldly. Almost satanically good. The owner might have benefitted from a polite pill but all in all tasty goodness was had.

So far I've satisfied my pizza gnoshing itchiness with Amy's No-cheese Artichoky something something pizza as that seems to be the only frozen vegan pizza I have been able to spot at the markets. It has proved fruitful, but I do plan on making my way to Pizza Pi more often.

Anyone else have a similarly devilish experience at this place?

Welcome to Washington cougar and jeffrey. I got a pizza from Pizza Pi once and did not enjoy it at all. I thought the crust tasted like cardboard and the cheese crap just stuck to the roof of my mouth. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I'm used to homemade pizza, but I probably won't eat there again. Other yummy veggie resturaunts in Seattle are Araya's Vegetarian Place (vegan thai) and Bamboo Garden (vegan chinese, except for the fortune cookies)

That is so refreshing. I can't tell you how many people move here and then snipe about the 'superior' weather back wherever. It's hard for me to bite my tongue when I hear the whining. I spent one collegiate year in SoCal and couldn't abide the lack of precipitation so I hightailed it back.

I almost keeled over with happiness when I woke up this morning to the rain pounding down outside. Can't wait til autumn - November is my favorite weather month 'cause we usually get scads of the raindrops.

Welcome to the area, by the by.

Winky, thanks for the welcome.

You could have probably been my mirror image that morning when I, too, heard the rain calling my name. "Alright Jeffrey, I've played with your mind long enough. I'm here. Come play with me."

I'm hoping that here I'll make up for all those cloudless, colorless, dry, broken record depressing days I woke up to every morning when I lived in Arizona and southern California. On another note, a fellow VBer and I went wild rasberry picking the other day. While most were still unripe, there were plenty that tasted heavenly.

I mostly do not mind when people are driven away by the wet. The state is so loved to death because of the short sunny season that we do have.

The sexiest sound that I know of is the sound of rain dancing on the roof with the haunting sound of a thrush singing her rain song for harmony in the back ground. And the scent or the air, just before and after as well as during is invigorating. The romance of sharing an umbrella with someone you love is one of life’s simple pleasures. One thing that must be experienced to be appreciated is getting caught in a torrent while trekking a path along the shoulder of a mountain and finding shelter under the protective limbs of a gracious, ancient cedar. She will all but embrace you in her protective limbs.

hey everyone! I've been on this board for a couple weeks but I just now noticed this forum. I'm in the Seattle area (Lynnwood for now actually) - I love the Araya Vegan Thai restaurant in the U-District!! that is the best. I love the black rice pudding with coconut milk...mmmm.... I've never tried Pizza Pi but I've always wanted to. Cafe Flora on Capitol Hill is also good but kind of pricey, and watch out for the vinegary collard greens...blech.

nice to meet all of you! :hi:

Hello everyone, I am moving out to Seattle in the following months and am looking forward to it in ways I cant even describe. Anyone live in the Seattle area that can recommend some ok areas to search for apartments that arent going to kill my wallet? Im moving from AZ so its a long good size haul and can be tough sometimes to check out all the areas I have found.

Hey Jeffrey, where ya from in AZ? Good to see im not the only person trying to escape the sun! 8)

Ive been out to Seattle twice now and the second I stepped off the plane I knew I was home finally. Between the music scene, the outdoor markets, great people and even better weather I cant wait to be out there!!!

Thanks for any help with the apartment situation!

Nick

Nick - the closer you are to downtown the more you are going to pay, so it just depends on what you are looking for. Personally I love the U-District but you are going to pay a lot if you are really close to the University - but Wallingford, Greenlake (not too close to the lake of course) and Northgate areas are somewhat nearby and you will pay a lot less. And they are still within a pretty reasonable distance from downtown as well...Seattle has a great metro bus system if you don't mind some characters (but hey, aren't we all characters?) If you want less expensive apartments which are NICE...you are going to have to go much further north like Shoreline, Lynnwood, Lake Forest Park, etc. I live in Lynnwood now and it isn't bad but it is definitely suburbia...I used to live right next to the University and that was my favorite. I love being able to walk places...plus there are some really good vegetarian restaurants around there.

Nice to meet you anyway, and good luck with the move! :)

Hi Nick ~

Do you know where you will be working? I'm a big believer in working close to home and given the traffic in the area (especially on the bridges over Lake Washington), I would really recommend you plan that way. That said, if you want to live in town, check out Ballard and First Hill. I think there are some comparatively inexpensive rents there.

Even though the rents are higher in the city, it's really worth it from my perspective. I live on Capitol Hill and work a mile from home so my commute is 20 minutes on foot rather than an hour in traffic. Also, living in a dense neighborhood, I can walk to a restaurant, store, library, movie theater, etc. within a matter of moments. The traffic around Seattle *bites* and it's just not worth my mental health or the petrol to add to it.

Plus, Capitol Hill has several very veg*n friendly restaurants. There are two vegetarian spots within a couple blocks of my home. :)

Hi Colorful ~

I love Cafe Flora. Bamboo Garden on Lower Queen Anne is a good one for those times when I find myself missing an old comfort food - their almond 'chicken' is fabulous. Flowers in the U District also has a veg*n lunch menu. I'm not near there for lunch, but I've always thought that was cool.

This is definitely a good town for veg*n eats.

Hi Winking Turtle! :hi:

Nice to meet a veggie in the area. I'll definitely have to try out the Bamboo Garden, I used to love almond chicken! Hey have you ever tried The Teapot in Capitol Hill (right across from Group Health)? I've never been there but my dad works at Group Health and says that it is a vegan restaurant although they don't advertise it as one. I guess the owners' son is vegan and refused to set foot inside as long as they served meat.

Nick - I agree with WT, it can be worth it to pay more $$ to live in the city. Have you considered getting a roommate? That's the only way I ever afforded to live right next to the UW, and one of my good friends is sharing a beautiful house RIGHT on Greenlake right now, and her portion is only $400/month. www.craigslist.org is a good place to search.

Hi Colorful ~

For some reason I have never eaten at Teapot. I pass it periodically and they are very clear about the lack of meat and dairy to the point of having a sign up telling people not to bring anything else in with them (like beverages in their bags, IIRC). I don't know why I've never been there.

Right next door to Teapot is a yummy veg sandwich shop, Vegete. Last time I passed by there, they had changed their hours (big reduction) so I'm not sure how they are doing but I really like some of the sandwich options they have - I had a field roast bbq dip of some sort that was quite indulgent.
