ROFLOL! it's all of our hills around here that make it so bad. A little bit of ice and everything gets messed up. Gotta love 4wd!

Yeah, that's what that guy in the SUV caroming off parked cars and telephone poles probably thought. :p

LOL, you have to a) have it in 4wd and b) know how to drive; not so sure that was a very experinced driver.

In his /her defense they did show a Portland Police car, chained and parked with the cop standing next to it, start sliding down a hill all on it's own.

It looked like Portland got hit with less snow but harder than we did here in Seattle, when we got hit last week.

I am thinking I want to get more involved in the vegan/vegetarian community around Seattle. Are there any groups that exist that people are aware of? I was also thinking of looking into a cooking class if anyone has a recommendation. Thanks.

my husband just got hired at microsoft, so we will be moving up to the redmond area soon. any suggestions on place to look for cheap housing, areas to stay out of? thanks

Not much cheap housing anywhere commutable to Redmond, specifically because of the huge number of MS people there. I can't think of any area I'd explicitly avoid anywhere near there -- if you were going to look on the other side of the lake (Seattle) that might be a different story.

I'm about 35 minutes from the MS campus, I think, and could show you around the area.

One notable: very close to MS, on 24th, is Teapot Vegetarian House, an all-vegan Chinese restaurant.

do you know which microsoft campus he will be working at? You should be able to find a house for rent for that price with no problem.

Depends on what you mean by driving like idiots, and what biking distance is.

If your pyrennesse is social Redmond (just below the main MS campus) has a 40 acre off leash park.

he dosnt know wich campus he will be i yet. by drive like idiots i mean:
- people on the freeway slow to 20mph because theres a cop at the side of the road...stuff like that.
i donno what his limit would be for biking to work.

a 40acre dog park?!nice! we dont have anything like that here. he likes other dogs, hes just nervous with new people.

thanks.

He should see if he can find out which campus he will be working at. I believe the Redmond one is still the biggest.

Yes people do have a tendancy to drive like idiots then, which is part of the problem in regards to traffic congestion.

Yes it is a great place to walk your dog!! Havoc grew up there. It is in the back part of Marymoor Park and runs along the Slue (river) so there is water access most of the yr as well.

If you find out what campus let me know and I can try to give you some recommendations as to which cities would be convient for biking, traffic, etc......

his campus will be 3900 148st. redmond. 98052
he will be staying with a friend in bellevue.

its funny the dog park we have here is like 100ft-200ft. and its just grass and a few benches. in comparison, the one at marymoor will be like doggy disneyland:)

thanks a bunch!

So he will be at the main campus.

Bellevue and Redmond are neighboring cities and the Microsoft campus he will be at is real close to one of the borders.

If it was me and I was looking for an easy commute (little traffic) I would be looking in Redmond, Bellevue, or Kirkland. Particular areas to look into would be Bridle Trails , Crossroads, Rose Hill.

Any of those would be 10 miles or less of a commute and all would be bike friendly (designated bicycle lanes). All should also fall within your rental price range. All relatively close to major bus lines as well as shopping areas.

The attached pics as well as the one in my avatar were all taken at Marymoor, and yeah it is a great place. If I still lived in Redmond I would be there everyday, as it is we tend to make it only on weekends these days. If you do end up going a lot I would recommend joining S.O.D.A which is the org that takes care of the dog area and I would also recommend getting a yearly parking pass. If you go more than 2 times a week they end up paying for themselves, anything less than that and it is cheaper to just pay the buck a day that is now charged to park there.

If you guys have any questions feel free to ask, I used to play in the woods that are now the Microsoft campus where your husband will be working.

eta: glanced at your profile, Marymoor also has a climbing wall in another area of the park over by the veladrome.

OK! Who's going to VEGFEST (http://www.vegofwa.org/vegfest/index.html) at Seattle Center this weekend?

We went last year and it was AWESOME!

Well, a few of us (4EverGrounded, myself and our families) are planning on going tomorrow, Saturday, March 24.

Anyone else wanna come with us? We're meeting at BAMBOO GARDEN (http://www.bamboogarden.net/)restaurant at 11:00 for an early (amazing, vegan) lunch, then heading to the Center.

If you're interested, just drop by Bamboo Garden and have lunch with us, or just say HI... (we'll be the quiet, sedate group of four or five sitting calmly in the corner...).

Oh, too bad - we are planning to go to VegFest on Sunday this year. My husband and I decided to do VegFest as a date this year and we already have babysitting lined up for Sunday. I'm excited to finally get to sit through some lectures and cooking demos! (which wouldn't be possible with my 3 year old and 1 year old!)

Have fun!!

Oh MAN! Too bad, I'd have loved to meet you, colorful!
But hey, if you and hubby have a date, no need for me to intrude either...
Maybe next year?

Here's 4EverGrounded, my middle "Sprout" and myself with our new friend the Purely Decadent truck...

Yeah, I was sorry to have missed you guys! Maybe next year!

Did you have fun? I really enjoyed it this year - I watched raw food chef Jennifer Cornbleet make a raw chocolate cake with raspberries (too bad they didn't let us taste the cooking demos this year though!), and my very favorite part was the talk on preventing and reversing heart disease by Dr. Tim Reisenberger. He was a GREAT speaker, very entertaining and he involved the audience quite a bit. He was so positive and encouraging!

I also enjoyed the new venue...it didn't seem nearly so crowded and people weren't pushing and shoving as much to get at the food samples. I did, as usual, feel stuffed full of too much processed veggie food by the end of it! My husband was WAY happy with all the soy delicious samples though! :lick:

Oh, and we made out with the extreme closeout sale where all frozen and refrigerated items were sold for $1.00 each! We came home with an entire box of stuff for only $19.00!! We definitely had that high that you get when you get a REALLY good deal...

Ohhh, remembering the extreme closeout stuff was such a temptation for me to come back on Sunday, but there's no way it woulda worked with my schedule. We did that year-before-last and came home loaded with stuff!

I've heard Dr. Reisenberger speak before and was very impressed! He is good!

Oh, and yes, we had a blast! Way less "crowded" feeling this year! (I gave a pretty detailed "review" of the whole fun day in my blog.)

Does anyone know of a seattle area fancy restaurant that serves meat dishes which has a vegan option? It's my boyfriends birthday and he would like me to take him somewhere fancy and suprisingly most of those places have no vegan option. It probably doesn't exist, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Is it strictly necessary for him to eat animals on this occasion? Carmelita or Cafe Flora's garden room should be plenty fancy.

Failing that, try Palisade over in the Magnolia neighborhood. I've had a vegetarian meal there in the past - they could probably accomodate.

Unfortunately he does feel it is necessary to eat animals on this occasion and less fortunately I feel obligated to try to accomodate him as he is always so willing to take me to vegan places for my special occasions. I do love carmelita though. Perhaps for our anniversary. I'll check out palisade thanks.

I've also read a claim that a vegan meal can be had at Canlis, but probably by pre-arrangement. I know that I wouldn't care for the place myself.
