4EG, we were pleased before, and will be pleased again, to have both you and your omniveg spousal unit with us.

4EG:
You had BETTER come!
My kids asked first thing... "Is that cool tie-dyed lady who called you TOFU at VegFest gonna be there?"

 (*Imagines 4EG with bizarre tie-dye striping all over her face and hair...heehee*)
And hubby? Eh, not a problemo... the more veg*ans he's around, the more positive influence we can be, right? (Well, OK, not that I'm a "positive influence" for ANYTHING but... well... you know...)...
Keep in mind people, I want to meet up sometime first week of July when Froggy hops into town too!!

...And on another note entirely, has anyone ever been to "The Moonlight Cafe" in Seattle (on Jackson)?
It's supposed to be just awesome Vietnamese food (not all veg, but very veg. friendly and knowledgable) and has a huge vegetarian menu with lots of faux meats and such... the vegetarian options do not contain fish stock, shrimp paste or other items...
Yeah, I haven't been but after hearing a ton of raving reviews, called them and talked with them and decided I MUST try it some time soon... anyone like Vietnamese food?

^ I think I ate there when I visited Seattle last year! Is it the place in Pioneer Square about a block or 2 from the waterfront? I just remember excellent Vietnamese food with a very friendly staff. Rather inexpensive, too.
Okay, let's say 12:30pm on Saturday 5/13. Vegan Thai buffet at Araya's, 1121 NE 45th St in Seattle's so-called University District.
:furious: Of all the...!!!
I'm making a quick trip out to Seattle 2nd week in May, but I'm leaving on the 5/13 morning flight! Any chance anyone wants to meet up for an informal late nite coffee the night before? Maybe we could meet at Coffee Messiah because I'm too scared to go there alone (last time I went there, I sorta caused a minor incident. I dropped my change into the guy's coffee mug because I thought it was a tip jar... hadda make a quick exit after that ).

No Pioner Square is not near the U district. Different places.

Moonlight is in the International District, east of the the stadium-follies. I've yet to try them. There's a vegan Vietnamese place on Bainbridge not far from the ferry terminal - I need to check it out for a future vegan meetup.

OK, Seattle folks, I'm planning a trip up there in early to mid-June-- I need the low-down on places to eat and things to do while I'm there. Any suggestions before I start searching the entire thread?

Among the best IMHO places to eat:
Cafe Flora is beautiful and the food is divine http://www.cafeflora.com
Araya's on 45th is great vegan Thai, with a lunch buffet.
Teapot is great vegan Chinese
Hillside Quickies is vegan soul/carribean style food - not for the faint of liver, but very comforting
Wayward Cafe on 55th is homestyle vegan, home of the largest chili relleno humans have ever seen
There are a bunch of Ethiopian places - Queen Sheba is perhaps the most accessible, Addis Cafe is very good.
How long will you be up here, and what sorts of things do you enjoy? The classic tourist thing to do is a ride up the Space Needle to the rotating bit at the top. The Underground Tour is fun: http://www.undergroundtour.com
One could take a ride over to Bainbridge Island where there's a vegan Vietnamese place that I've yet to try.
6/3 or 6/4 will be the Vegan Meetup
Snoqualmie Falls is nice to visit: http://www.snoqualmiefalls.com

Well, Tess, I must preface this by saying that you must meet up with ME when in Seattle and WE can do lunch...
Or not... yeah, I know, time and all...
I mostly agree with Antonio. I'm not totally enthralled with Cafe Flora, they are nice but I guess just too spendy for lil' ol' me these days, maybe as a nice place for on a date...
Bamboo Garden is one of my faves. Some people don't like the "faux meat" they have in many dishes, but I love it. It's a major veggie mecca when in and around Seattle (and it's right downtown near the Needle and Pike Street Market and all).
Teapot is AWESOME - vegan mango cheesecake that will rock your world! Arya's is nice beause it's a buffet and I'm so dang cheap! HA!
Hillside Quickies is really cool! Yummy stuff made from tempeh and tofu and seitan and lots of deep frying and spices and wicked things like that - SO YUM!
I'm really wanting to try Moonlight Cafe - vegan friendly Vietnamese, haven't been there yet but it sounds amazing from all reports. I've never heard of the place on Bainbridge.
As far as what to do? Downtown with the Needle and Pike Place Public Farmers Market are always popular. (Lots of very fishy smells and sights at the market just to let you know... it's Seattle - that's what we do... throw fish around).
Several good brew pubs with an excellent collection of Washington microbrews.
Woodinville isn't far away and has a bunch of winery tours you can do. Chateau Ste. Michelle being the most well known (best tour too!). http://www.ste-michelle.com/
Kenmore Air is a Seaplane company that can whisk you to Victoria, Canada in just minutes - it's a BEAUTIFUL little flight and oooh-la-la SO romantic if you take Mr. Tess along to Victoria for an overnight excursion (Froggy and I are headed there in July). http://www.seattleattractions.com/kenmore.html
The Spirit of Washington Dinner and Mystery Train is so COOL too!! http://www.seattleattractions.com/train.html
PM me if you need more info or want different types of restaurants and all - being lacto-ovo, you could be assured of plenty of options ANYWHERE - even the fancy seafood and salmon places... I'd LOVE to help - or play tour guide - or just give suggestions.
Have fun!!

ROTFL - I remember your "Coffee Messiah" story - SO FUNNY!
Yeah - sadly, I think they've closed, too bad, 'cause I'd have made the drive just to see a re-enactment!!!
So, could ya get a later flight?? :D :D :D
If Seattle wasn't such a drive for me I'd meet up any time (OK, I admit it, I don't exactly live "in" Seattle...)...
Oh well, hopefully you'll enjoy it so much you'll return - sometime when it IS convenient to meet up. :brood:

Saw Petty there last summer. What a poser. Good thing his self image way too obscured by his ego or he might have minded getting blown out of the water by his opening act. I enjoyed seeing him a lot better 10 years ago when I wasn't as wise a fellow as I am now.

I had been talking to Mr. Tess about the second week in June, but I would love to see if we can move it up to the first week for the vegan meetup! Then again, individual meetups might suit me better. I don't do well in large groups.
We're not beer or wine drinkers (Mr. Tess doesn't drink at all, and I only an occasional margarita) so I think the brewery/winery things would be lost on us, but we like to do outdoorsy stuff. In fact, one of the major reasons for choosing Seattle is to get out and enjoy a change of both weather and topography. The one thing I've vowed I want to do is go on a hot air balloon ride. Yeah, I know we could do that here, but Gulf Coast Texas just isn't the most inspiring landscape to float above. I also heard that we can take the ferry out to some of the islands that are very beautiful. I wouldn't mind going hiking-- Snoqualmie Falls sounds great. And I'm sure Mr. Tess would love it he could get in a little rock climbing (although I dunno if he's planning on brining his equipment). Other than that, just really any of the touristy things. The Space Needle, Public Market, dinner train, and Underground Tour all sound like great ideas. I also thought it might be neat to rent a car and just drive around the Sound area some, maybe down to Tacoma (about how long a drive is that?). I think I also heard that there are some lovely old lighthouses in the area.
I'm also looking forward to trying Ethiopian food. I think we have maybe one Ethiopian restaurant in Houston, and I haven't bothered to check it out.

Oh, the other thing I should add is that Mr Tess is decidedly NOT a vegetarian-- while he doesn't mind eating veggie with me most of the time, he's bound to want meat sooner or later. Got any ideas for places that'll feed both kinds well? I think Anthony mentioned an omni Thai restaurant in Snohomish...

Unless there is a specific reason to be in Seattle during that time frame I would recommend waiting until after the 4 of July. Otherwise bring rain gear.

how long did you say you were going to be here and what type of hiking do you like; anything specific on the air ballon, ie what do you want to see. Depending on the time of day will determine the time from Seattle to Tacoma, about anywhere from 40 mins to 2 hrs, give or take..... why Tacoma?
