View Full Version : Nylon or Vinyl? Shower curtain help

My mom wants to get a liner for the shower curtain, as there is a fabric outside curtain, and a liner on the inside. The only options I see are either vinyl (which I'm opposed to) and nylon. I'm thinking of telling her to get nylon as I think it's the best choice environmentally, and it will function well for its purpose also.

I know there are some alternatives such as a cotton shower curtain, but that needs to dry thoroughly between showers to prevent mold, and that would never happen in my house ;) Are there any other options out there as far as curtain liners go? I'd love to find a recylced one, but don't know if anyone makes those.

Oh! I was just looking online and I found a place, http://www.greenhome.com that has a hemp shower curtain that looks pretty good. I think that may be an option, yay!

Yeah, PVC is environmentally nasty stuff.

Unfortunately, sometimes the PVC liners are the only solution...

My daughter is extremely allergic to molds/mildew and we have to jump through all sorts of hoops to keep the environment mold/mildew free for her (no easy task in damp Washington weather... maybe I should move somewhere warmer and drier...)
Anyway - our only option, to date, for shower curtains, is the PVC type. I'd install shower doors if I could afford a bathroom re-do but that's not in the budget so I have to compromise my personal preferences for her health... :/

Id be interested to know if those hemp ones remain mildew free in a damp environment? I haven't run across any fabrics yet that will...

Our hemp shower curtain has a natural resistance to mildew and bacteria, and can be machine washed to clean any grime buildup. After machine washing simply hang the curtain up to dry. Any wrinkles will disappear during showering. You may find it necessary to use a natural mildew preventative from time to time depending upon climate and your shower's natural ventilation.

We use sturdy and rustproof brass grommets which will enable your curtain to last for years.

Using your hemp shower curtain demonstrates your concern for our planet's environment by reducing chemical and plastic use, reducing landfill mess, as well as beautifying your bathroom environment by bringing nature into your everyday life!

From another site:
Welcome to pure and carefree organic hemp bathroom accessories...No more compromise (vinyl/plastic/conventional cotton shower curtains (!)). Our 100% hemp canvas shower curtain is made from premium quality certified organic European hemp that is processed without chemicals or pesticides of any kind in Romania.

Hemp is the perfect shower curtain material (even above and beyond organic cotton) as it is durable. It has been known also to be naturally anti-fungal & anti-bacterial. The hemp fabric, which is naturally UV-resistant, has always been legendary for its strength and wear-and-tear resistance: up until the turn of the century (before synthetics came along) hemp was the fiber of choice for seafarers and outdoors people everywhere.

Care instructions: Please keep your bathroom well-ventilated at all times, especially if you're using the hemp shower curtain without a liner. We recommend adding borax and/or distilled white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solutions when you launder your hemp shower curtain. Due to the many conditions under which the hemp shower curtain will be used, we can only guarantee against manufacturing defects upon arrival. We cannot guarantee against future mildew or mold buildup, which (in the unlikely event that they occur) can be treated successfully with borax and/or distilled white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide solutions. Chances are, if you get mildew on your hemp shower curtain, you would also get it on plastic or organic cotton shower curtains too. Fresh air is the best safeguard against fungus. Thank you for your understanding.

Important notice: If you suspect that mold or mildew might be a problem or if you've had a problem with mildew in your bathroom before, please use a liner! Hemp is a strong fiber but it's still a biodegradable natural fiber. We sell tons of our sustinably-made hemp shower curtains everyday (and our customers are very happy with them) and only one in about 500 cases has a problem with mold which usually turns out to be due to moist conditions. Mildewed shower curtains do not qualify as defective products, especially after months of use. We can no longer exchange them if they have been used (unless of course they arrive defective). The best guard against this situation is to use a high-quality liner: that way, your hemp shower curtain will always look and stay fresh and new. Those not wanting to use a liner will have to make sure to prevent conditions that are conducive to mold or mildew. We appreciate your kind understanding.

I have the hemp shower curtain too and I love it. I have had it for at least five years and it hasn't fallen apart yet. I did trim the bottom as it was too long.

They are expensive but worth it. And best part is that, because they are heavier, they don't fly around and attack you while you are in the shower. :)

You have to make sure they dry out properly after they get wet or they will fall apart earlier and won't last as long.

I bought mine at the rawganique website (can't post links yet).
