We normally shy away from the meat subs, but I had a HUGE craving for taco's, not a meat craving just an overall whole taco craving, so I gave these a try. They were AWSOME. Cooked it up and added taco seasoning and it was so good.
The last meat meal we had before going veg was tacos, my husband said that if I served that to him 4 months ago he probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

I agree, I did the same thing last night. Actually, I have been making this for awhile.

Try Boca crumbles too, I think they are better and more conveniently packaged. We do taco's on a somewhat regular basis. so good!

I actually looked at these the other day, and then decided not to buy them!
Now, after reading your post, I guess I'll have to pick some up!
Thanks for both of the suggestions for Morningstar AND the Boca!!! I just LOVE this forum!!!!:nana:

I add them to a vegetable soup, spaghetti, on a pizza. I love Morningstar Farm products.

I love the Morningstar crumbles. We make "cheesesteaks" with them and sloppy joes...the possibilities are endless! :chef: I saw recently that they have "sausage-style" crumbles too. I bet it'd be good in spaghetti sauce. I'm getting hungry just talking about it!

I've put them in lasagna before. Good stuff.
(PS: I've noticed they give me slight digestive problems, though.)

I agree that the boca crumbles are more conveniently packaged. Its the perfect amount I use for recipes, and no freezer burn like with the morningstar ones after opening the whole thing and only using part. I love them for tacos as well.
The other day a friend of mine made stuffed peppers with the quorn crumbles. Wow, those were scarily meatlike. Much firmer in texture than the morningstar or boca ones - I don't know that I'd buy them myself because they were just TOO meatlike.

I love the Boca ones for sloppy joes and tacos!!
Often if I'm craving tacos though, I don't have the stuff around, so I'll crumble some extra firm tofu in a fry pan and cook until sorta golden and chewy and then add taco seasoning and tomato sauce (or salsa) and use that as a filling instead. Still super yummy and satisfies that taco need...

I wanted to add that for those of us in the more Southern states, who have Publix grocery stores around. I found the "Publix" brand of the morningstar crumbles the other night for like 1/2 the price!
I haven't tried them yet, but when I do, I'll be sure and post back and give a review. I know most other generic Publix brands are very good!
They are also starting to carry the Publix brand in the veggie burgers and breakfast sausage as well! I didn't realize that Publix was starting to carry so many vegetarian/vegan items. They had all kinds of the Amy's frozen dinners, and a few other things as well.

We don't have Publix around here, but then I don't live in the real South; I live in Texas. :p

Last night my (omni) husband and I went out for pizza. He had ground beef on his, and about half-way through he told me, "Don't expect to hear this again, but I actually think the stuff you use to make tacos with is better than ground beef."
I use Morningstar Crumbles to make our tacos. I was amazed that he said this! Maybe there is hope for him yet! :bobo:
But I thought that was a pretty solid endorsement for that product.

ITA with everyone that the crumble in tacos is really good.
One of my faves is buying Morningstar steak strips instead of the traditional skirt steak and marinading them in a carne asada marinade and serving with mesclun, jalapenos, avocado, cheddar, sour cream, salsa etc. on warmed corn tortillas, it's so good.
Carne Asada Marinade
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/8 cup soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

I thought Publix was just in Florida? I know when I went to school in Atlanta, we shopped at Kroger, which is the big chain in most of the south.
As for Publix brand items, some of them are pretty good, but they're kind of hit and miss.
For instance, their "plain" soy milk has vanilla flavoring, so it doesn't work as well in cereal as Silk brand. On the other hand, it's not bad for drinking, if you want vanilla flavored soy milk. But then, if you wanted vanilla flavor, you'd buy the vanilla, not the plain, wouldn't you?
And their vegan hamburgers are awful. But I just tried the Boca brand vegan burgers, and they're not much better. I'll have to go back to Morningstar Grillers, despite the egg white. I'm not vegan, but I do prefer vegan foods over non-vegan foods, given a reasonable alternative.
Which brings us back to the original subject. Are these crumble things vegan, from either Morningstar or Boca? I've never tried them. I've been trying to find some extra stuff to throw into my spaghetti, and I've heard of using those crumble things for that.
I tried veggie meatballs (I think Gardenburger brand) last time I made spaghetti, and I wasn't that impressed. They weren't awful, but they weren't great, either. I was actually thinking of trying something completely off the wall. Instead of using soy-based fake meat, I was thinking I'd go straight to the beans themselves and just throw in shelled edamame next time.

I checked my bag of Morningstar Crumbles, and they are labeled 100% vegan. The ingredients seemed to support this.
If you live anywhere near a Trader Joes, I love their meatless meatballs. They are vegan as well. I use them for meatball subs, stroganoff and spaghetti. I've thought about trying to make some kind of meatball appetizer out of them, but have never attempted it. They're quite tasty.
Sometimes I make bean patties/balls with cannelini beans to serve with spaghetti or rigatoni. Those are good too, since I try limit how much we eat the meat substitutes. I prefer for us to eat fewer processed foods. I do appreciate their conveniance, though, and anything that gets my omni husband to eat less meat is a good thing in my eyes.

We add a can of crushed tomatoes and sauteed onions in with the "meat" and taco seasoning. We let it cook down for about 20 minutes and it really tastes delicious. We call them "nacos", as in "not tacos". Brilliant, I know. :)

Crumbles are great. I use them in my shepards pie, spaghetti, sloppy joes, and tacos. I have not tried Quorns or bocas yet, but i will look for them.

I didn't see this thread the first time around, so when I saw it today, I thought the thread title indicated Morningstar Farms had gone out of business. :surprised

I didn't care for them personally. :( The steak ones either. I prefer to slice up the breaded patties. :) The texture was off... some people like them though.
