:hi: Hi everyone...I am thinking about moving to San Antonio! So what is the vegetarian scene there? Any vegetarian restaurants? Cute cafes where I could work? How do you like San Antonio? Thats all for now...tata
San Antonio has a very small vegetarian scene, especially compared to Austin, but we at least have one. To my knowledge, we have no 100% vegetarian restaurants, but do have several that come very close.
Adalante- Heavenly, healthy Mexican food! The best puffy tacos I've ever had and great quesadillas, enchiladas, fajitas, tamales guacamole. . .I could go on. It has some meat options too and all of the omnis I know love it too. It's located on Brees and New Braunfels road.
Twin Sister's Cafe and Bakery- Great variety of veg*n food (and some meat) and a great breads and pastries as well. They have amazing pacakes at breakfast and live music Friday nights. It's located across from Adalante on New Braunfels.
Gini's Restaurant and Bakery- A blend of homecooking and health/veg*n specialties. I reccomend the sandwhiches, breads and salads.
We also have several downtown cafes that cater towards vegetarianism and lots of Asian places with great veggie options (Thai Dee, Pacific Moon, Thai Cafe etc.).
I never realized there was a Texas thread on this board. :surprised

I used to live in Houston and Spring, TX. I hate Spring. The only store with stuff like veggie dogs is HEB, and they don't have much, and most restraunts I've seen in TX don't really have anything vegetarian. Houston has better stuff in grocery stores though. But I live in WA now, and there's tons of veg stuff here! Not saying I hate Texas, I just didn't like how hard it was to find food, and how my parents/grandparents were raised in farm environments and don't think it's natural or healthy to not eat meat... my grandma won't cook for me :-P And I only knew two people who were vegetarian by choice besides my sister. But go Texas people, anyhow! I miss my friends there... and the rainstorms. I just wanted to post here because I'm kinda homesick :( And because I'm kind of surprised to find other Texas vegetarians, or that there are vegetarian restraunts. I thought I was one of very few TX vegs! Glad to know I was wrong, and that there IS hope for Texas yet ;)
Hi there!
Can I ask you a question? I'm not from Dallas, but I'm going to stay there for a couple of weeks to do work for my company. I'm probably going to stay at a hotel right in the centre of town. (Main Street to be precise.) Would you know if there are any veggie restaurants nearby? I've looked up some restaurants on happycow (http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/texas/dallas/index.html), but even with the address it's difficult (for me at least) to decide whether they are close to the city centre.
Any places you would like to recommend? (I'm a vegan, diet-wise.)
Gah, I'm so sorry that I didn't seen your reply to this sooner! (Didn't show up on my subscribed threads for some reason).
If it's not too late, I'd recommend Cosmic Cafe. It's close to downtown and they have some nice Vegan options, including desserts! Be sure to try their potato appetizer (I think they're called "Samosas", but I could be wrong). They're awesome!
I hope you get this in time. If not, I apologize and hope you had fun during your trip and didn't starve! :hungry:
Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you know that I'm organizing an informal Vegan cooking group in the Dallas area that will meet every other week to make a dish and share ideas with others so we can all benefit. I know that since I've gone Vegan I have been struggling to expand my options and I hope this will help. We have a good amount of interest so far and I'd like to see some VBers there!
PM me for more details. :lick:

Thanks, Kelson! I actually went to Cosmic Cafe one night. Nice place, but they messed up with the vegan thing :brood:. (They got it right on second try, though.)
My best restaurant experience was with a chinese vegetarian (vegan) restaurant way north - I forget the name. The taxi ride was 5 times as much as the meal, but it was well worth it regardless.

Ack, sorry about the mess up at Cosmic. I love going there whenever I get the chance.
The Chinese place you went to was either Suma's or Veggie Garden. They're both very similar and close to each other, but not near downtown (they're in the Richardson area).
I love them both and go there whenever I feel like driving a bit.
I'm glad you were able to get some good eating in while you were here. Look me up next time you're in town. I'm always looking for more folks to hang with.

I just thought I'd poke my head in here and say that I'm new to the boards and live in the Dallas area. We have some good veggie groups around so if you're looking to meet new folks, drop me a line.
Hi Kelson... I'm new here too and I'm in the DFW area. Haven't had too much luck finding like-minded folks though. I'm working a LOT right now so don't know that I'd ever get to any sort of in-person function, but it would be good to know what's going on in the area and to know folks to exchange store/restaurant info with.

Hey DFW people - Just another mention for Spiral Diner - I went for the first time yesterday and it is so amazing you have just got to go! It is in Fort Worth and totally worth the drive. (I am in Austin but was in Arlington over the weekend and went home via FW and stopped in for lunch! ) :lick:

I've got to get over to Spiral Diner one of these days. I haven't had the occasion to travel that way yet though. With gas prices what they are, I haven't been able to rationalize spending the money for the ride from North Dallas yet.

Hi there,
I'm from NJ, but was recently visiting a friend of mine who just moved to Houston a few months ago. she is also veg*n. Anyway, I was really impressed by the amount of veggi places to eat in Houston. We didn't even get to half of them while I was there and we pretty much stayed within a few miles of where she lived. ( I forget exactly what the area was called...it was near Rice Village i think.)
Anyway way to go Houston! It was great to go away from home and not worry about what I was going to be able to eat.

Hi ScareyVegan!
Have you seen this list?
http://www.vshouston.org/restaurants.htm
I think maybe the list hasn't been updated for a while, so it's probably a good idea to call beforehand to find out if they're still alive.

I live on the near west side, not too far from the Galleria area. I'd love to meet up with other Houston folks for meals out or at home.
Another good place to eat in Houston is Field of Greens on Alabama just a couple blocks down from the new Whole Foods. It is all vegetarian except for a couple of fish dishes, and has many vegan items. They have sandwiches, salads, and assorted entrees ranging from Vegan Quesadillas to Vegan Fettucine Alfredo. I've been there twice, and it was very good but a little on the expensive side.
If you're not saturated with Chinese food yet, there's a small place called Hunan Garden on Fondren near Westheimer that delivers. It's omni but they have a vegetarian section. The food is good and reasonably priced.
Someone mentioned they couldn't find the Hobbit Cafe. It did move a few years ago, and its new location is on Richmond between Kirby and Shepherd and it is VERY hard to find. It's on the south side of the street behind a pub called the Blue Marlin (or something like that - Blue something with a fishy logo). You can see their sign from the street, and you pull in there and you will find Hobbit Cafe behind it. If you still miss it, you can turn south and get in the back way from Sul Ross, the next street south. I've only been there once and I was not that impressed. They are no longer all veg, and their main claim to fame seems to be that they cover virtually everything with a huge pile of guacamole. While it's good guaco, I've only been veg 7 months and I'm already tired of being served guacmole at every turn.
As for Mai's, I went there all the time when I was a student at Rice, and I had no idea it was either award-winning or veg-friendly! Must give it another try.
I also love to eat at the Thai Spice buffet - they have several locations and I usually go to the one on Voss near Westheimer. It is omni with a small vegetarian section, but it's more than enough food and variety to stuff me silly. I love the pad thai, tofu curry, and spicy potatoes. they also have a couple of kinds of veggie sushi, and my downfall-- cheese rolls with lemon sauce. They used to have an all-vegetarian location, but they closed it. Boo hoo! I haven't inquired too closely whether their food is really and truly vegan yet, but there are no obvious signs of dairy or eggs (except of course for the cheese rolls).
You might also check out this Houston restaurant guide: www.b4-u-eat.com
Garden Bistro, mentioned by several folks here, got mixed reviews there, but everyone seems to love Tien Ren, Quan Yin, Pepper Tree, and Field of Greens.
My burning question is, where can I get locally grown, organic produce in Houston? I've been to the farmers market on Airline, but I suspect the produce in the front part (Canino's) is the same as grocery store produce, and in the back where the farmers bring in their stuff I always see crates reading "Product of Chile" etc. I don't speak Spanish and the farmers rarely speak any English so it's hard to quiz them on the real origin of their produce.
What's this I hear about Central City Co-op and community gardens? I want to get in on that.

Although I live in Houston myself, I spent a week in San Antone not long after I went veg, and I wrote a review titled "A Vegetarian Tour of San Antonio" on one of my favorite sites, Epinions.com, that might be helpful to people wondering about eating veg in the Alamo city.
You can either paste in the direct link below (add the w's), or just go to epinions.com and search for San Antonio. It should come right up in the first page of SA reviews. However, I should warn you Adelante fans that I skewered it!

I posted this in a thread before, but I want to make sure as many people as possible can help... Rita is about to hit, and people are desperately trying to evacuate animals from Galveston/Houston and places around there. Pleas for help can be found here:
http://www.beloblog.com/KHOU_Animal_Attraction/archives/2005/09/spindletop_resc.html
You can navigate to other requests at the top of the article. They especially need help from people nearby... which isn't me anymore, or I would help. But if you can, you could help prevent another Katrina catastrphe!
Thanks.

Another place to eat if you work downtown is Panini-- it's a sandwich shop in the tunnel level of the Pennzoil building at Rusk and Louisiana. They have four vegetarian sandwiches on the menu:
Eggplant (eggplant in tomato sauce),
Vegetarian (eggplant in tomato sauce with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil),
Mozzarella Pomodoro (fresh mozzarella with tomatoes and lettuce), and
Artichoke and Roasted Pepper (also has cheese, garlic and basil but it's good without the cheese).
I love the Vegetarian and the Artichoke and Roasted Pepper.
Hmmm... if you're looking for vegetarian and vegan Mediterranean food in Houston, try Aladdin's on the corner of Montrose and Westheimer. It's only been open for a few months, but they have AMAZING hummus.
I know there's a vegan cafe somewhere close to downtown on West Alabama. I'm not sure what it's called, but their stuff is all homecooked and incredible. It's in a community center called the SHAPE Center. But definitely check that out if you get the chance.
Sigh... Montrose is a great part of town. The hippie capital of Houston, yes, and home. There are days I don't even want to leave... :)

Yeah, I personally am trying to ignore it. I'm not a baseball fan in any way, shape, or form. There was a huge party downtown last night, though.

I'm the same way, Tess :D However, at work I have noticed that conversations are either work-related or Astros-related; not much else. Luckily, a former co-worker works here and we talk weirdo music and film tastes

Hey Houstonian veggieheads!
I'm having a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner the Saturday AFTER Thanksgiving at my house, and you're invited! If you'd like to bring something to share, so much the better. Let me know if you'd like to come, and what you might like to bring. There may be a little L/O food present, but there should be plenty for vegans to eat.
PS: Seating is limited, as my apartment is not ALL that big!
