Living in Galveston, Texas, myself. There's only three places to get Vegan food around here, and even then the options are sorely limited and a little iffy.

If anyone is in San Antonio, go to Green Vegetarian Cuisine & Coffee, they make the BEST Vegan food!

Aw we went to Galveston a lil while back and had some excellent Greek food. And there was some coffeehouse/cafe place whose name eludes me that was mad decent.

Mod's? I've heard of the Greek food place but never can remember it when I'm out.

Yeah, it was Mod's. We were so totally bummed out when we tried to go there the first day we were in Galveston--apparently they don't make their food to order, but pre-prepare it and it depends on what's left in their case as to what you can eat. When we got there, we went up to the register to order what we wanted... the lady pointed to the case and told us that's what we had to choose from. Unfortunately, most of their vegan items, including all their wraps, etc. were pretty much gone. We felt pretty dumb, but moved on. That's when we found the Greek place. Their falafel made it all better :)

We made sure we got to Mod's early the next morning, and huzzah! There were plenty of goodies. I had the Thai wrap and LOVED the tofu they used. It's mildly annoying though that everything's pre-made and you can't order certain things left off/added... but all in all it was a really good place.

Also, we're both in San Antonio--Green's one of our favorites! They're getting better and better the longer they've been open, too. It's not the best vegan food ever (THAT's in Los Angeles!), but it's pretty darn awesome ;)

Green is the shiz. We were thinking of taking a trip just to go eat there.

My husband and I are living in the Rio Grande Valley which is probably the least vegan friendly metropolitan area of Texas, but we manage to get by beautifully. There are about 6 places we eat out at regularly, but what makes it nice is the huge amount of good-quality locally grown and cheap produce. We also belong to a CSA and that helps enormously. I thought when we moved down here that we'd have to take grocery shopping trips to Austin just to live, but when I do go, I find I don't really need anything!

If anyone ever needs to come to the Valley for anything, my husband's blog...SouthTexasVegan.blogspot.com...has a listing/discussion of restaurants we have eaked out meals at. And you can't come to South Padre Island without visiting Naturally's! It is a vegan's dream!

Couple of notes...I ate at Green in SA and I was really dissappointed. The food was weird and bland. I hope they've gotten better and I'll try and go again. Spiral Diner is WONDERFUL! And I could eat every meal in Veggie Heaven in Austin. It broke my heart to see that Nu Age Cafe in Austin shut down! That place totally inspired my own cooking.

I lived in McAllen for a year or so. The almost year round supply of local produce was terrific. I can't remember any restaurants there or in Edinburg but did get some good vegan food on the Island.

There is a place in downtown Galveston we just discovered called Mediterranean Chef. The owners are REALLY nice and the food is wonderful. A LOT of their food is veg, a lot vegan, and will make anything vegan that they can for you.

Hey Texas Vegs. I'm fairly new to the board and was wondering about meet-ups? Do you have regular ones or are there any in the works?

Where in Texas do you live? There are vegan meetups in Houston on a regular basis.

Fort Worth.

I had some awesome veggie sushi the last time I was in Houston. I think the name of the place was Azuma or something like that? The waiter tried to get me not to order it, but I went against his advice and got it anyway. He couldn't believe I ate it all. :hungry:

I've heard of that place. I'm glad to hear it has veggie options! If you are in Houston again, try a place called A Field of Greens. It's almost all vegan food,
and it is wonderful! They have a chocolate tofu silk pie, that I would almost kill for!

Apart from the fact that he tried to discourage me from ordering something that I ended up really liking, our waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. He pointed out that some items that appeared to be veg friendly did have those fish flakes in them, even if not stated on the menu. So, if you do go, make sure to ask your waitperson about those hidden dangers of yuckiness. Hopefully he or she will be educated enough about the menu.

By the way, the reason that the waiter told me not to order the veggie sushi was because he said everyone that ordered it thought it was bland. My theory about that is I think that the people that usually order it must be the type that have been dragged there by their sushi loving friends. Afraid to get the real deal, they order veggie sushi, so they can be hip but not eat the scary raw fish. They probably don't eat veggies other than french fries, so they cannot appreciate real veggies served in a yummily different way. That's just my idea of why anybody wouldn't like it. Too each his own, though. Besides, I don't see how anything can be bland when you put a lump of wasabi on it. Wow! My nasal passages weren't back to normal until we made it back to Ft. Worth!

By the way, thanks for the suggestion! I really only travel when it is for business, and I am always with a coworker. Instead of making her go to predominately veg friendly establishments, I usually see what I can scavange at regular places where she wants to go.

I'm in Dallas/Plano anyone know of any veg*n meetups? I am LO, but I don't mind vegan groups AT all, especially since I strive to be vegan one day.

Hopefully none of you all mind me wandering in to say hi. There is a distinct lack of members who are in Oklahoma that stay (seriously, we have a few join and then post a bit and disappear) so it's a little lonesome here. Thought I'd say hi here, since there is actually activity here.

Hypothetically speaking, we should do some sort of OK/TX meetup someday. I think I've suggested this before and it tanked, so I thought it'd be worth bringing up again.
And by OK/TX meetup that pretty much means me flying in to Dallas and meeting up with you all.

Anyway, hi :hi:
Hope nobody minds me popping in. I won't mention my alma mater or my employer here. I don't wanna get hurt. :worried:

Vegan Longhorns rejoice! There is finally a deli and bakery specializing in treats for you within walking distance from campus. Dhaba Joy, located behind Austin favorite Toy Joy on Guadalupe, is an adorable retro-style cafe with sparkling and spindly light fixtures, comfy round chairs and the best desserts on the planet. Their vegan cupcakes, from strawberry shortcake to German chocolate and everything in between, are absolutely delicious. Their rich flavor and appealing presentation make them candy for the eyes and mouth. The new vegan cinnamon rolls are some of the tastiest, and will please vegans and non-vegans alike. Their creamy and tender texture is fun to sink your teeth into.

P.U. OU! Dang, I lost a bet on that stupid game. Grrrr.

Anyhoo, I would be down for a DFW meet up. Spiral Diner here in Ft. Worth is awesome and the great news is they are soon opening one in Dallas. Seems like Dallas would be easier for everyone, even stinky Sooners. (I kid, Brandon!)

But you gotta admit- an exciting game no? :)
Plus you guys kicked our butt majorly last year. Vince was one hell of a QB. He was one fast runner! I was glad about the Natl Championship for UT- I actually rooted for the Longhorns! (I could get run out of town for saying that, you realize.....:worried: )

I didn't even get to see the game, I was helping out at my friends' coffee shop (where I proceeded to get espresso all over my light colored Earth shoes I just bought - grrrrr) but I did get several text updates from my friend in OK that made the bet with me. As of this date, I have yet to answer any of the texts. Yep, I'm a welcher. :naughty:
