BTW, joyous yule, everyone! :santa:
Same to you (and you and you and you)
It's that very image of Texas that frightened me at first. Now I simply don't watch TV so it's no bother to me... I'd have to say I see a lot more dreadlocks on a regular basis than I do cowboy hats.
Have you considered
TV :gun: ???

My boyfriend is taking me to dallas for a day and I want to find a fun veg resteraunt (or one that at least has good veg options!). Any suggestions from people who know dallas?
I know Dallas better than the back of my hand. :)
Cosmic Cafe is Dallas's renowned hippie dippy hotspot. Made out of an antique house painted and decorated on every square inch, they have Indian-inspired fare, the best hummus ever (blended with cucumber), and a yoga studio upstairs that's nice to clear your mind in after a big meal. :) It's located on Oak Lawn between 35 and Cedar Springs.
Just around the corner from there is Taj Express on Lemmon. It's mostly vegetarian. An all-you-can-eat buffet of the best home cooked Indian food you'll ever have in your life, short of spending the evening at a little grandmother's house in Calcutta.
Spiral Diner is located in Ft. Worth but it's award-winning vegan American food is worth the drive. Blue Sky sodas on tap, vegan spaghetti and meatballs, vegan ice cream, vegan barbecue sandwiches. Need I say more? :)
Sorry for all the Indian suggestions, but they are just so GOOD. Kalachandji's is another all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet located inside the Hare Krishna temple. The waiters are all Hare Krishnas and the gift shop is awesome. Free feast and service on Sundays.
Jasmine Hookah in Richardson is the BEST Middle Eastern restaurant I've ever been to in my life. They do have meat there, but their falafel wrap is to die for and they have a garlic sauce you'll be thinking about for the next month.
For something faster, cheaper and a little less ethnic, Great American Hero has a couple locations and a fabulous hummus sandwich, amongst other veggie sandwiches. They also have fresh fruit, veggie soups, and carrot sticks with ranch to get instead of chips.
Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me for directions to any of these places, or more suggestions. :)

Oh yeah, I forgot why I came to this thread in the first place.
I'M MOVING TO AUSTIN!! Woot! I've been wanting to move for about three years now but something just kept always getting in the way. But my husband came home the other day and announced that he put in his two weeks notice at work.
I've visited Austin about a million times, and had my honeymoon there, so I'm relatively aquainted with the city. However, I only have a few friends there and not a massive knowledge of local cool stuff. So everyone in Austin please feel free to invite me and my husband to hang out or go out to eat. :)

Not a bad idea. I watch a few shows (mostly on Discovery Channel), but other than that, it's just for playing DVDs.
And congrats to elibrown on moving to Austin! Ludi's right-- Texas is pretty diverse, and Austin's as veggie-friendly as it gets.

Posting from San Antonio, here. Moved here a little more than 6 years ago. It would be funny if I had seen some of you from San Antonio, passing by at the grocery store or the mall...

Hello from Wellborn, Texas! Incase you haven't heard of it, and many of you haven't, it's close to College Station and Bryan. Anyone from either of those cities?

Due to limited internet access, it has been forever since I've posted!
If anyone in Houston has not tried Field of Greens, on West Alabama, you are deprived!
It has been one of my favorites for a while. Almost everything on the menu is vegan, except for some fish dishes. The chef is vegan, and will veganize almost everything on the menu.
The creamy garlic dressing is raw, and wonderful!
The chocolate tofu pie is almost worth selling your mother for.
I think it's kind of sad, in a city as huge as Houston, that there aren't nearly enough places to eat like this. :(
Oh well, I'll be hanging out there as often as I can, and hope everyone in Houston tries it.

Yeah, I wonder about the number of veggie/vegans or even veggieboarders I may be passing by when I'm at whole foods and see someone reading labels or scanning the soymilk. Well, if you ever see a short blonde reading an ingredients list obsessively, be sure to say hi!

If there are any Texas gardeners out there - tis the season for garden shows.
Here is a link to info about shows in different parts of the state:
http://www.texashomeandgarden.com//home.html
I'm going to the San Antonio Show in January (the Saturday show in the afternoon) - if anyone wants to do a meetup there - let me know.

Hi from Hamlin! The only "health food" store within an hour's drive from here (serves some vegetarian entrees) was found to have rats and roaches. Damn.

Thanks to the Handbook of Texas Online (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/) I now know a little more about:
Wellborn (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/WW/hlw17.html)
Hamlin (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/HH/hgh3.html)
Leakey (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/LL/hll27.html) (couldn't find "Leakley" so I figured it was just "thick fingertips" on the keyboard.) Leakey's got a strong Native American history by the look of it, too :)
This map of the couties may also help figure out where each town is since the handbook only gives the nearest highway or FM road, in addition to the counties. Texas County Selection Map (http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/maps/texas_map.html)
I've lived in the Houston area all my life and am always learning something from the online handbook. Anyone remember the TV show "The Eyes of Texas with Ray Miller"? I remember Ray explaining how the state came up with the FM road numbering system and being thoroughly confused well before he finished
Rice University archived the show back in 2002 - Giving Fondren the Eyes (http://www.rice.edu/sallyport/2002/summer/sallyport/givingfondreneyes.html)
I have yet to try Field of Greens. I was chatting yesterday with two other regulars over at Zabak's Mediterranian Cafe and they both recommended it, so I'll have to try it soon. Still, I love the falafel at Zabak's and recommend them, too :D

thanks echowarrior ! agreed!
Kentauros - that was good link about the counties - thanks!

You're welcome, Funkified :)
I hadn't seen that link before, either. I usually use a static map of counties at work to better get my bearrings on the pipeline maps I make. If a client starts talking about their pipeline in whatever county, I have to know it so I know what system they're talking about :)
I have even used the online handbook to find the correct names of streams and creeks, so it's helpful for all sorts of things.

It was fabulous, Lumos. SO moist and the frosting was AMAZING. Dinner last night was great--you could tell it was the first day because there were a couple kinks (ie, they didn't have the gnocchi that KofiAnnonymous wanted, the waitress had to sort of call out "who had the fries?" a couple times when things got mixed up), but it was great, and I think it's going to have a long run in SA. At least I HOPE so. I had the chopped BBQ (tvp) sandwhich and my boyfriend had the portobella burger. Both were awesome! We also ordered the veggie platter with their fantastic hummus to take home to munch. A+, I say! I think I'll stop by there for lunch today while I'm downtown.

Awesome. thanks for sharing. I can't get there until Saturday and was wondering how it was going. I figured a few kinks would need to get worked out. So glad to hear you enjoyed your meal there. Yea! Can't wait to go.
Now I'm even more excited. I hope they're successful!
Argh. Green has weird hours. I went there tonight and they were already closed. Turns out they close at 7 on Fridays, are closed all day on Saturday and are open until 9 the rest of the week. Kind of odd.
