Can anyone recommend a good vegetarian restaurant in San Antonio?
Thanks! :)
There are no entirely veg restaurants yet in San Antonio, but I personally love:
Adelante (Don't miss the veggie puffy tacos and quesadillas!)
Twin Sisters (excellent breakfasts, salads, soups, sanwiches and an incredible veggie burger.)
India Palace (good standard Indian fare)
Gini's Restaurant and Bakery (Lots Veggie home cooking)
Thai Dee (owned by a vegetarian, great variety of dishes and he can alter most anything on the menu to make it vegetarian/vegan. it's also rather cheap.)

We just got a new HEB's in Katy and I'm really happy with it. They have 3 different types of soy milk, the vegan eggrolls that we love, a large variety of personal care items with no animal products in them and a lot of other vegan products. I may still continue to go to Whole Foods for some of the breads once a month, but it's nice to have most of the things I need close by.

ive read this forum for a while but never introduced myself or anything, and since i happen to be a bored vegetarian in dallas, i thought i would.
ive been a vegetarian for 2 years now. i am a 21 year old male senior at southern methodist here in dallas. i can't stand my school anymore, and i'm not a big fan of the dfw, but i've got to get my degree, then i can worry about going somewhere else. i have a problem with the majority way of thinking here in dallas, especially regarding liberalism, animal rights, and just the general apathy i feel from people towards issues that are important to me. alas, i'm willing to bet most people like me feel the same way, not just in the dfw.
anyways, i just wanted to say hello and reaffirm that there are actually people in the metroplex who care about other things besides steak dinners and SUVs. :)

There is also a place called Zaki its an Arabic place real tiny but has good food.
It is not just vegan/vegetarian because they do serve meat but a large portion of thier menu is vegetarian.

I think I saw an ad in the newspaper but I've never heard anyone talk about it. I'll have to try it. I love Middle Eastern food in general so it sounds like my kind of place.

Yes!
It's hard to remember that sometimes. I go to Cosmic Cafe and Kalachandji's to keep it in the forefront of my mind:bobo:

Hi, all. :hi:
I just wanted to say hello to my fellow Texas vegetarians & vegans. (I don't think the lifestyle is generally a huge movement here in cattle country!)
Any fellow Houstonians around?? :)
Oh, and btw,- Did you guys know that two of the three horse slaughterhouses in the U.S. are here in TEXAS??? Just heard that on the news today.

Hey! We have a few Houstonians here. I'd like to see if we can start a regular Houston meetup for dinner. I know there's me, sallyomally... I'm sure there are 2 or 3 more, but I can't think who.

Hey! :)
A dinner meetup would be really cool. There is a Houston Vegetarian group at Meetup.com. I am a member of that, but I think they wanted to do their meeting on a Wednesday?
I don't live in the RGV, but I'm a vegan in San Antonio who visits the RGV a few times a year to go hiking. Are there any restaurants you like there? I couldn't find any and always bring my own food when visiting.

Hello,
Thanks for the Thai Dee recommendation. I've only been there once, probably 8 years ago, but I actually only live a few blocks away from it now. What dishes would you suggest there for vegans? Is there fish sauce or anything else I should watch out for?
In San Antonio, I like:
Zaki (best falafel in San Antonio, plus ful medames and yummy spinach pies!)
Adelante (great food, plus great people work in and own the place)
Madras Pavillion (lunch buffet includes a dosa, and they offer some veg dishes that the other Indian restaurants in SA don't)

Awesome! I know there is also a Houston Vegetarian Society and they do dinner meetups in theory, but they haven't had any scheduled in a very long time, and I don't think the group is currently very active. I looked at the group on meetup.com, but it was pretty big and organized, with speakers and everything, and that's well and good, but I'd really like to just get a small group of maybe 3-6 friends/acquaintances/potential friends together for a casual veg dinner. Wednesdays would be pretty much out for me too, because that's the night I can get into the rock gym for free, so that's going to be my rock-climbing night.
If we got a few of us together and did a weekend lunch or dinner once a month or so, that would be cool. What part of town are you in?

I agree with you that a smaller group of people would be more ideal. :) Also, I thought the idea of Wednesday dinner meetups was a little odd considering most people have too much going on mid-week to make it.
Anyhow, I am on the NW side of town. How about you(and any other interested Houston board members)? :)

I live not too far outside the Galleria area. I know we have at least couple of active members in Montrose, one or two in Katy, and one more down in Clear Lake. Madras Pavilion on Kirby is all veg and in a good central location, and they do a lunch buffet which I haven't tried yet, but I hear it's good. I think they have the buffet on Saturdays, but I'm not sure. Anyone want to try a Saturday lunch at Madras? :hungry:

I went to the Spiral Diner website and I was reading about the new restaurant opening up in Dallas and was talking about opening up close to a shoe store that sells vegan shoes. Does anyone know what this shoe place is called? I didn't know it existed. I sure hope that restaurant opens up soon! Can't wait to go.

Woo hoo! :hamster: OK, we've got me, veggieeater... who else is on board for Madras Pavilion in Houston on a Saturday lunch? sallyomally? catgirl67? kentauros? IdealisticGirl?
I'll send out some PM's or emails to the people I know are in Houston if I don't hear anything soon.
Does anyone know for sure if they do their lunch buffet on Saturdays?

Tess I live in Dallas but I do have some friends in Houston whom I owe a visit to. If I knew say...2 or 3 weeks in advance, I'd be likely to attend.

Yes, I'd definitely be willing to try a Saturday lunch at Madras. :)
Found this at B4-u-eat.com:
According to the reviews, it seems there is an ongoing buffet on weekends. Also, you can read reviews posted by costumers. :)

How about next Saturday the 23rd for a Madras Pavilion meetup? If you guys are vegan, you might want to check ahead of time how vegan-friendly it is, 'cos I don't really know.
