About 3 weeks ago, my oldest son and I went to a flea market a few towns away. In a booth there, there were live animals for sale. The chickens and rabbits and goats really had it bad and the conditions were terrible. I knew talking to the owner would do no good, so when I got home I immediately wrote a letter of protest. I sent that letter to the market itself, the entire city council of the town its in, local newpapers, the County SPCA, and for good measure..the governor.
I received a few replies back, but the one from the Sherrif's Office/Animal Control Dept. promised they would look into it.
I'm glad to say that I went back this past weekend and the animals were doing so much better. They all had shade, bigger pens/cages, and food & water, that dosen't sound like much..but trust me it's more than they had before.
So..after that long-winded story..what I'm really trying to say is, one person CAN make a difference & don't be afraid to speak up for what is right.
How inspiring!
Thanks for doing the right thing!
I'm very shy and don't like confrontations, but I know I can be loud and obnoxious when I want to be. :p And I can certainly write letters.

Great job! Everything we do to help out our mother earth, animals and mankind, no matter how small it appears, makes the world a better place.

I know this is horrible, but I always viewed writing letters of protest as sort of... pointless. I could always just see the person on the other end roll his eyes at the first line, laugh with his co-workers about this loony tree-hugger, then toss the letter in the trash without reading it through... But your story has definitely inspired me. I'm glad it worked out!

Totally right on!!!
About a month ago while I was visiting my friend in WV, we went to a flea market in Ohio, and outside some people were selling rabbits, chickens and ducks. It was really hot out that day, and they were all stuffed in small cages....the rabbits were actually on top of the cages... I was baffled by the lack of care they had, yet sadly I did nothing. Their kids were helping them sell animals, and my friend (who goes there all the time) said that was the first time they'd sold animals there, so my P**** a** didn't do anything about it. My friend did buy a bunny though, and the real sad thing (yet really good thing) is even after less than a week of them having it, it gained weight, it's bum leg 'healed', and it looked much happier and healthier. I still feel guilty about not doing anything. So kudos to you for speaking up! If I ever see anything abusive like that again, I'll definitly speak up!
Our county animal control officer is very concerned about animal welfare and will follow up on any call made regarding animals in distress, maltreated, etc. It's always worthwhile to call the authorities on these kinds of situations.
