View Full Version : South Carolina
I went to a couple flea markets in columbia two weeks ago. I found a link that shows where lots of big fleamarkets are and the pricings of booths, etc http://www.fleamarketguide.com/sc.htm
I also found a site that lists a few cities that have vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants. It also has some health food stores listed. http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.net/usa/SouthCarolinaReal.htm
Also found a list of animal shelters in various cities and counties. Thought that would be helpful, too. http://www.netpets.com/cats/catresc/scarolina.html

I grew up near Clemson and lived in Greenville for a couple of years. The Pita House is easily my favorite my restaurant -- well worth the trip! Also, Earth Fare has some pretty good vegan options in their cafeteria. They used to serve a cutlet in savory gravy that was to die for. I'd usually get the cutlet, new potatoes, and a salad there, then buy a second meal to go. Garner's cafeteria never excited me that much, but they sold incredibly good brownies and the best mock tuna salad (though it tasted nothing at all like tuna) I've ever had.
There also used to be an Indian place on East North Street (across from Publix) that had some really good veg dishes. Don't know if they're still in business.
I shop at Earth Fare all the time but have never tried their caf. I'll have to check it out next time! Since Whole Foods opened last week, I'm not sure how often I'll go to Earth Fare since it is farther away from my house and I am SOOOOO in love with Whole Foods. :) They had the best Tofu "Egg" Salad!

I thought I'd bump this thread and let everyone know I'm from SC. I'm actually from columbia and have been here all my life. I'm 21 by the way. Anyhow, I've been vegetarian for 3 months or so. Downtown area has lots of places to eat, so if you would like to ask any questions, feel free.
*waving*
I'm in Columbia, SC. Anyone else?
Yay! South Carolinians! I'm from Darlington county. My town and the city near it doesn't really have anything veg-friendly to offer restaurant wise, but I survive. :p
i'm in aiken, about an hour from columbia. i was born in columbia, actually.
nice to see you two.
well at least now we know there's active sc peoples. what do we do now? o.o XD

I think I posted about a year ago here when I first went veg.... it's been over a year now. :) Nice to see more peoples have showed up! I'm 26 and in Greenville. I have found most of the Mexican places around here have a vegetarian section.... Guadalajara comes to mind.. there's one in Mauldin and on Haywood road... I think there are more. They have awesome veg fajitas!
Woahhhh dancing broccoli! I LOVE broccoli! Especially when it dances! Why can't it dance on my plate?!?!?!? :bobo: :lovesign:

There definitely aren't many of us around and the area I'm in is not veg-friendly, at all.

I'm not from SC but I visit there a lot since my cousin has a condo in Murrells Inlet near Myrtle Beach. Can I be an honorary SC member?
I have family in Sumter.

I'm not in South Carolina - but in NC. I just wanted to post because I recently started an online community for us all. to sum it up the way I did in the NC thread:
After much searching of the internet looking for a site that catered to animal rights activism in North and South Carolina I came up empty handed. There were sites for tiny towns in Ohio, but nothing in the Carolinas other than sites specifically for groups on college campuses. Because of that, I decided to make a forum to cater to those of us who live in these two states. I would love if you all who are into animal rights activism, or even just veg*n (there are forums there for that) to join us over there and help us start connecting with others. The site is http://aracarolina.conforums.com
For now the site is just on a remotely hosted free webforum. I will upgrade to a paid host for a site/forum whenever I 1)have more cash and 2)see a need for it. For now, the free one is just fine :). Please don't be put off by the site being *new* and therefore somewhat empty. The people who have joined up so far are super nice and I would love to see more membership and more local connecting there. So if you're interested check it out, and if you like it...pass it on to friends who are in the Carolinas and fit the criteria as well.
Oh and we also have a myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/aracarolina

Yay!
Actually, I don't really like it here...but WOW the low cost of living!!!!!
I'm a short little 26 yr old Irish woman living in the ghetto-fied area between N. Main Street and Monticello Rd. Yay me! (sarcasm)
Hooray for Kroger's for carrying Vegan foodstuffs, and for being on my way home from work!!!! (there are other places in Columbia, but they're too far out of my way)
But, there apparently aren't many people like us who shop there, and you REALLY have to watch the expiration dates. I accidentally bought some expired Tempeh that I'll be returning. :-/
Ah, Columbia. I sometimes miss it. I was born there and moved when I was 10. I've been in Aiken ever since. The only times I've been back where for the State Museum and a couple times at the zoo years back.

I think this is the first time I have ever posted on a board... I was just in the neighborhood and found this site. I live in Columbia, SC- and almost always have. I know lots of vegetarians- mostly of the family variety (moms, dads, and kids)- we're here. Even a vegan or two. It's not a super vegan friendly place but you can get by in a lot of the foreign restaurants (Indian, Middle Eastern, East Asian). Just plain vegetarian is easy to do most places here. Rosewood market is a great grocery store/deli- nice place to check out if you're in the neighborhood- you can google it for more info. We do most of our shopping there. Anyway- there's a good group of people here.
