Maggie's Mercentile isn't too far from Pittsburg, and they do all-you-can-eat buffets on Sats when they can get enough people. My fiance and I just happened to see a sign on the road traveling to Fallin Water and it we were like YESSS!

Has anyone here gone to Luna Pastle in Harrisburg?

I grew up in Harrisburg! Most of my family still lives there, and i was just there in december visiting! I have never been to Luna pastel, but I think i know where it is, is it at the Broad Street market?
I remember going to the broad street market as a kid!!
but anyway, i will check it out on my next visit!

I live in Erie, Just below Lake Erie. I don't really think theres any vegan or vegetarian restaurants around here. I might be wrong, i dunno. But i like it here, it's surrounded by country, and it's really pretty. We have a great mall, best one i've ever been to, even when i go to like florida and stuff, i still like ours. But i guess that depends on what you like. There's actually not much variety in being a vegan here. Theres just the same stuff at every store, Soymilk, tofu, and fruits and veggies. I hear theres a health food store somewhere around here that sells organic and vegan food, but i've never been there. So if anyones getting together join me in. I'd love to actually meet other vegans.

I live in Erie as well. There are a few places for Vegans/Vegetarians.

To buy groceries:

The Whole Foods Co-Op (26th and Brown Ave)
Erie County Farms (Broad Street off the Bayfront)
Any Wegmens in Erie has a health food section with organic and vegan/vegetarian selections

Eats:

The Whole Foods Co-op, they have a little cafe with good food
Lettuce Entice You (10th and State), great salad bar and vegan/vegetarian soups
Papa Joes (8th and Chestnut), great vegan pizza and lots of vegetarian selections
Ayoyama (my the mall), has vegetarian/vegan selections
It's Greek to Me (also on state street)
I just went to this place off West Lake Road that has amazing vegan selections but I can not think of the name of it. It starts with an A and is two words. It is a little expensive, but the food is great.

I see commercials now and again for Sharon, PA being like this great shopping town. Have you ever been?

I have never went shopping in Sharon since being a vegetarian/vegan. All I know them for is their chocolate stores. I'll have to look in to this.

Not to invade the PA thread, but...

Lol, we always used to go there to eat at Quaker Steak. Haven't been there since I went veg either.

That'd be a little bit of a drive for me to go shopping anyway.

Well, sadly circus season in the Philly area is fast approaching.

The first circus to arrive is always UniverSoul, which usually rolls into town at the end of March or early April and stays for two weeks. About ten days later, Ringling Bros. comes to town and is here for about 10 days. After that, a few smaller circuses such as Cole Bros. and the like come in for a few days in late summer.

I work with a group, the Circus Education Campaign, that organizes outreach events to educate the public on the reality of the life of circus animals. We have a website, www.circusedu.com , but the website is still very much a work in progress.

Right now we are developing our strategy for the upcoming season. We are going to have a variety of offsite and onsite (at the circus) events. We *really* *really* *really* need more people to participate in these events. All of the demos are peaceful and respectful events, because we have found that approach works much better than loud and disturbing. Yet, we do not shy away from spotlighting the abuse, so we will have videos playing as well as graphic posters.

If you are in this area, please consider helping out. For the animals, THANKS!

you might also include some footage from working elephant rescue organizations. the elephant sanctuary in arkansas (http://www.elephantsanctuary.org/default2.asp) might have footage of their animals living in peace, as well as the one in tennessee (http://www.elephants.com/sanct.htm).

if they don't have footage, it's a great way to get people involved "right then"--by this i mean you can get pledge cards or a donation box and make a donation to such a sanctuary. your educational efforts are really important and valuable, but this gives people a way to be active in this cause immediately (aside from NOT going to the circus).

anyway, i hope it adds to your work.

Hi Zoe,

We don't take money at our demos, but we do hand out flyers from The Elephant Sanctuary and we do have the Elephant Sanctuary introductory video. Our problem is that we just don't have enough people doing outreach.

ZOe, I just realized you were linking to Riddles in Arkansas. That place is not a sanctuary, it is a breeding facility that uses circus style training. You can read more about Scott Riddle, the founder of the Riddles' facility by googling his name, or here is one link that details his beating of a 2 year old baby elephant:

I am THRILLED to report that right now UniverSoul is NOT scheduled to come to Philly this year. This is WONDERFUL and AMAZING news because they have come to Philly every year for the last ten years at least, for about two weeks of shows. This year they are coming to Camden for only six days.

YEAH!!!!!!

thanks for that, rowan, about the place in arkansas. i did a quick search, and i think i got it confused with another place. it freaked me out that they were breeding animals there, but i didn't come back to check the link. i know about riddle, but i didn't realize that these two places were related when i followed the link. that's frustrating.

and what's sad is that the man thinks he's doing a good thing.

i simply don't have the time for outreach right now. i'm preparing for my trip to new zealand and simply too busy. but, i am involved with the TN sanctuary via donations myself.

Hi,
I used to live right outside of Philly and am coming back out in September for my brother's wedding.I know everybody's gonna want to eat out someplace nice. Anybody know a kid friendly (or not) veg restaurant?

We'll be up in Pittsburgh soon and were wondering about some good veg places to eat? I've read about a couple: Zenith, Quiet Storm, Abay.

Any comments on these or additional suggestions?

Thanks,
T.

We are doing educational outreach at the Walker Bros. Circus shows tomorrow, Tuesday March 13 at 4:30 to 5:30 and 6:30 to 7:30. The circus is at the National Guard Armory in Plymouth Meeting, 1046 Belvoir Road. Please show up for the animals! Thank you.

ZENITH! Zenith Zenith Zenith! I cannot recommend it enough. It's a great restaurant. They have a loooong tea menu. And Sunday brunch is very, very nice. They have lots of yummy vegan cakes for dessert. I suggest trying the Tofishy sandwich.

*sigh* I miss living in Pittsburgh. :) Enjoy!
