Oh, geez. I'm sorry, I never answered! Helping Animals 101 is a conference put on by PETA each year in various cities in the U.S. It is AWESOME! I think they only have 2 more this year, but go to www.helpinganimals101.com to read more about it. It's worth remembering and going to next year. The weekend is packed with information, awesome vegan food, goodies, TONS of free literature and stickers, and a protest. It was one of the best weekends I've ever had, I really recommend it.
Anyway, I went to both Gianna's and Horizons and let me say...MAN, I am so going back to Philly all the time. I live in D.C. and our food here is not nearly as good as what I found there...consider yourselves lucky to be around such awesome restaurants! :)

Check it out.....

I can't wait to be in this atmosphere and also in NY again to go to my favorite restaurants! I try to go their once or twice a month to eat and also get on some tv shows :)
It is awesome being around people, lots of people, who have the same houghts and concerns you do.
$300! Yikes!
It sounds really cool...but sadly I doubt I can afford that right now(plus the cost of a hotel in NY...not happening.)
Although, I agree, there's nothing cooler (and more rare, unfortunately) than being in a room full of vegans and animal rights activists. I was in absolute heaven at the Helping Animals conference.

I feelthe same, but I aslo will spend $300 on something else not as worthy over the next few months, so what the heck :)
I did a seminar/lecture last year for Veg Club of Philly and it was awesome!
Being with people that undertand you - priceless!
Well...if there is ever anything else interesting like this going on in Philly...PM me. I'd like almost any excuse to be in the city that has vegan creme brulee again! :lick:

I was talking to a friend of mine and I feel really bad but one of favorite things to do as a kid was to go to the zoo and learn about the animals there, and now that my son's getting older I want to take him to see them too, but I don't want to support a zoo that doesn't take care of their animals.
I will NEVER EVER EVER take him to Brandywine Zoo in Delaware. That place is HORRIBLE. But I was thinking of taking him to the Philadelphia Zoo, I've never heard anything bad about it and they apparently do a lot with wildlife conservation. What do you all think?
Zoos are awful.
There's no such thing as a "humane" zoo, because all zoos take animals out of their natural environments to use them as entertainment. Animals in zoos often become neurotic because of their isolation and false surroundings, and end up needing to be medicated simply to come off as "healthy" to onlookers. Also, many of them develop diseases from being in unnatural environments and being fed an unnatural diet, which again results in them being medicated, all for the sake of humans wanting to look at them up close.
If you want to get that close to animals, I'd recommend finding some kind of animal sanctuary in your area and going there. Zoos are animal prisons, but sanctuaries are animal homes. :)

(I posted this in the Raw Foods boards, and didn't realize there was a place to post for PA)
For anyone who lives in the Lansdale, PA area, who would like a fabulous raw foods vegan/vegetarian cafe to go to..........Arnolds Way is unbelievable!
I went there recently for the first time and was very impressed. The food is
fantastic! you can eat in or take out and it's well worth the trip if you DON'T live in the Lansdale, PA area.
They have monthly potluck dinners and lots of other events.
check it out.

I don't know if I said it on this thread before or not, but I was born in Lancaster. Now I'm in Pittsburgh for college. We're pretty close to each other! :p

WOW!
What a great weekend!
If you are looking for a great place to get away AND have an awesome vegan breakfast, you HAVE to go to the Inn at Hickory Run in White Haven. http://www.innathickoryrun.com/
This place is very nice adn quiet. Located very close to Lehigh Gorge where there is hiking, biking or just plane ole quiet!
They made us breakfast that we unreal and lots of it!
Day one - a HUGE fruit salad in half of a scooped out canelope, toast, potatoes made in veggie oil with misc. veggies and pancakes - ALL VEGAN!
Day Two - same fruit salad.....toast, french toast (I haven't had french toast since going vegan 8 years ago!), couscous (cinnamon taste with raisins), potatoes again (homefries)
We travel quiet often to B&B's to get away (limit the social aspect though :) ) and we have NEVER been to such a reasonably priced place AND get a great breakfast!

Thanks I will remember it for next time. We go every couple of years. We actually found a Chinese place that had a whole vegetarian menu on our way home. I have to get the name of it form my dad. It was great. I got sweet and sour "chicken" (seitan) very very good.
