i was really shocked by the mercury's review. as much as i dig the mercury, i think the food is bomb. i do kinda agree perhaps the name "booty sauce" could be be misinterperated in a slightly unappatizing way. but it really is yummy. i think the best vegan alfredo i've ever had. just a bit pricey.
and the owner is a really nice guy who sold his restaraunt in la to open one here. yeah the locations not the best, but thats the ONLY thing keeping me away, as i'm an east side boy.

Went to Pirate's Tavern last night with my family. I can understand why it got a mixed review, but as the article said... It's a vegan pirate bar, what more can you ask for.
Here's my run down of the good, the bad and the ok:
The Good: While it's in an odd place the 'tavern' is pretty huge. It's definately not a hole in the wall.
Some of the items are pretty damn tasty. If you are into good ole americana food and longing for vegan versions of them, Pirate's Tavern will put a smile on your face.
The wait staff and chef were very friendly and welcoming. They take personal pride in the place and it shows.
The Bad: Price. $12.95 for a plate of chili fries is way way way to expensive. Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) didn't get out of the place for less than $50 and we didn't order any appitisers, beer or dessert.
Some of the food selections are much better than others. If you go absolutely ask your server for recommendations as the differences between their best dishes and worst is pretty huge.
The OK: Location. Honestly it's not all that awful. only 2-3 mins from the 405. It feels WAY out there, but I think people are making more out of where it is than they need to.
The Pirate Theme. I'd say they have some work to do on the Pirate theme. It's a little on the light side and with some work could really be more than justifying an easy to say name.
So I think the Merc may have been a little harsh on the place, it's still worthy of a solid mixed review right now. It's also important to note that they've JUST opened, so a lot of the issues will hopefully be resolved as they have more time and experience in the location.
But yeah... Vegan Pirate Bar... Despite its shortcomings it's still a VEGAN PIRATE BAR!!!

So kids are allowed? So it's more a restaurant/bar than just an over-21 BAR-bar? Cool. (Again, like when will I be in Portland? But still, good to know.)

Yes, we were not the only people with kids there.

I'll be in Portland this weekend for the Egyptian exhibit at the art museum and am looking for other diversions. I have the restaurant thing covered and plan on visits to Powell's and Food Fight!

There's also the Herbivore store. :)

Seems no-one in Oregon has posted for quite a while but I just wanted to say I am so jealous having found the website for Food Fight vegan grocery store in Portland, they seem great! Unfortunately they don't ship internationally though...maybe I'll have to come over some time in the not-so-near future.

Portland's worth the trip :)
Looks like I'll be moving to Eugene from Arizona this fall. Any places I should check out when I am there checking things out this summer?

Depends on what you like doing. The McKenzie river is great for biking/walking/sitting/writing poetry. When I was there in the 90s, campus was the most lively area in town.

Are there any vegan shoe stores in Portland? I am moving to Portland next month and am wondering if I should stock up on fall shoes here in LA before I move up there since I can avoid shipping costs at Alternative Outfitters.
Thanks,
Cosmo

No specific vegan shoe stores in Portland. You can find vegan shoes here and there but to specific store for them.

I'm headed to southern OR next week for a couple weeks. I've been to the Portland area, but was thinking about going backpacking/camping/ hiking near the coast or the Bend area -

Bend and the Southern Oregon Coast are a long ways apart.
The only Veg. friendly palce I know of in Bend is Kebaba on Newport. It's awesomely good Middle Eastern. You must have the zataar manakeesh or zataar fries. HEAVENLY!
On the coast? Gee... Spinners Chop House (I think?) in Gold Beach (I know, I know sounds VERY omni!!) has a whole page of vegetarian options - lots of great pastas and such.

I greatly enjoyed climbing South Sister on a vacation in Oregon in 2006. You need to be strong hiker. In 2003, I did some hiking in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.
Have a nice trip!

Just wanted to say hi to my fellow Eugene/Oregonians.
I got here about two years ago, and immediately fell in love with Eugene and it's folk.
Northwest feels just like home and a perfect place to be.
Luv ya all,

Recently found this:
http://www.vegportland.com/restaurants/
It lists out restaurants in portland by region, narrowing the list down by all-veg, mock meats available, or vegan cheese available.

What a cool list! (You guys aren't back in Oregon are you?) I'll have to refer to this next time I head that way...

:boobies: at that list! I'm going to be moving to Portland from Phoenix in early November, and I'm absolutely thrilled to see the number of options available there. I'm also hoping that the larger proportion of vegetarians has persuaded mainstream restaurants to include more veggie options as well.
No major league baseball, but the AAA Beavers have peanut tofu skewers and veggie dogs at their ballpark? Amazing!
