Hello Oregonians,
I am looking to move to Oregon in the next 2 years. My husband and I just visited for over a week, and it was just gorgeous! If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated: We are looking for a smaller charming town. We don't mind the rain or snow, I was raised up near Mt. Shasta in N. California and we would get about 10 ft. of snow during the winter. Just looking for a nice, charming town with friendly people, a place to raise our kids.
Thanks!!!

Don't bank with Washington Mutual. They invest in the contract animal testing lab HLS and there's a campaign against them right now. They know all the violations against animals that HLS has perpetrated, but they're being stubborn. Don't support them. www.insidehls.com
Oh man :( Guess it might be time to look into moving everything to my CU then. :(

OregonAmy, did you get all moved back? :)
Welcome gsmom! Nice to have another Portlander. :)
meatlesslizzy, I'm glad you liked it here. I can't help with your question, since I'm a city girl myself and don't really know any of the small towns. Might depend upon how small you mean though...

As far as small goes, 50,000 or less (which I guess isn't really that small). But we'd be happy with a town as small as 1,000 people, if it was close to Portland or Eugene, even Ashland.

I'm a new member, living in Portland. :hi:
:hamster: see you in 2 months!
once Sokara gets to OR we should have a potluck. I need friends.:o
another question: do you think we will have problems finding a house to rent if we have no jobs? we would have cash in the bank from the house sale, and we have good credit.

I did!! :) I have an apartment downtown now - a couple of blocks from powell's books :pibo: I can't complain about the location - I can walk to powell's, to whole foods, and to rogue brewing in a matter of minutes. it rules!
I've missed portland and it's great to be back. I've been BUSY BUSY the past couple of weeks and am getting ready for more travel, but everything is coming together...

Ashland is really nice but it's far from a lot of stuff. Are you looking to be relatively close to Portland or another big city? (ok no oregon cities are really "big" but it's all relative...) You could look at, say, Sandy or Estacada or Keizer or Corvallis... The whole Sandy area is nice because it's close to Mt Hood and Portland but still relatively small (though it's been growing quite a bit lately). Estacada & Damascus are nice; kind of rural but still close to the rivers and mountains and city. They're getting kind of expensive though because of that though.
good luck!
Thank you for the welcomes.
One of the reasons I signed up here is because I only have one veggie friend here in Portland and I wouldn't mind having more! I have good friends in town, but except for the one (who is my ex-husband) they are all omnis and I think it would be nice to hang out with other veggieheads once in a while.

My boss owns several apartment buildings, so I will ask his asst (who does all of the renting) what she requires for their tenants.

gsmom: I don't have any veg*n friends either. It's kinda like spending all day with 2 year olds and wanting to call Home Shopping Network just so you can talk to a grownup.:p

Hehe, don't wait for me to get started. It's going to be a while. But we will have to get together once I get up there...
Please?
I'll buy you guys stuff...

Re: Paradox Cafe
It's one of the few places I feel safe eating... that is to say I never worry that fries will be cooked in animal oil or Veggie burgers cooked on meat grills.
Vegan desserts are good too. When I'm away from Portland, the Paradox is one of the first places I come back too. The food is generally fresh, organic and local (when possible). I like that their menus inform people about food definitions, ie tofu, tempeh and the like.
Lunch or Dinner are better, breakfasts should be had at the Cricket Cafe. (a few blocks west on SE Belmont) One of my most favorite breakfast places in the world! though busy on the weekends.
Once you're outside Portland city limits, veg options diminish greatly. To have a place like the Paradox, with all its faults, is still something worth supporting.
RE: McMenamins.
These places are always a real treat to newcomers but they slowly lose their appeal. Many of these restaurants have dropped veggie options and have become a very meat dominated destination. Sorry but Tofu burritos and gardenburgers are not enough!
Beer and movies are great, Lauralhurst threater on E Burnside and 28th has better beer and locally owned ($3.00 movies)!
______
Finally
People's food Co-op on 3029 SE 21st, is the only vegetarian grocery in Portland. NO Meat! WOO!

Many people that I know think of Eugene fondly, but people I know who have lived there have had some serious issues with the fact that it is a VERY small town.
Moving from Dallas to Eugene might be a super huge culture shock... Any reason why you're not looking at moving to Portland?

okay, that's good to know. i've never been to oregon so i was going off the research i did online. i just know that i want to live on the west coast and oregon seems like the place for me. i don't have to live in a big place. i just need for things to be accessible, for there to be lots of small businesses and to have an eclectic populace. originally i'm from austin. it's about as cool as you can get for texas. and i want something with that kind of vibe.

I know nothing about Eugene, but my bf used to live there, so I'll see what I can get out of him.
Eugene is very nice for bicyclists. they have extensive trails and you aren't too far from the mountains, the coast and many other outdoorsie type activities. Less then 10 miles out you can see thousands of stars bright in the sky. Portland is light saturated, even 20 miles out you can see the glow.
There's the Morning Glory cafe, right near the train station. I love this place. They had soy creamer for coffee!! and you don't have to even ask! They also charge $.25 tax on people who don't bring their own coffee cup (for to go orders).
It's a small town and it's a university town that really likes football. There is definatly a layed back feeling there, but I find that common throughout the north west.

Eugene is REALLY umm... well... I found it boring. I lived there for 2 years, having grown up in portland, and couldnt' wait to leave. The night life is centered around bars/pubs, downtown rolls up the sidewalks around 5pm... it's pretty, but there's not a lot to do. But then I'm a city girl, so if you like small laid back towns, Eugene might be a good pick. Or Salem.

Oh man, that's terrible! Everyone should have access to food that is not morally reprehensible to them. I will write or call.

This was posted on another site I go to and she asked me to post it here, so we can hopefully find good homes for these two kitties... If you are interested, please PM me and I will get you in touch with the other person.
Here's the deal - my parents have retired, and they are going to do that whole travel the country in an RV thing. They have 3 dogs and two cats. The dogs are going with them while they travel, but the cats are not. Mom has been trying to find homes for the cats with friends and acquaintences, but no luck. My parents are located in Cottage Grove, Oregon so you would probably need to be willing to come get them, or arrange for live shipping to your area. Unless maybe you live in northern California, in which case they may be able to deliver on their way to Palm Springs. Both cats were inside/outside cats for several years, then my parents moved to a new house in the country, and the cats got kicked outside. They've been outside only for about 5 years now. If I'm not able to find them a home, my mom is going to take them to a shelter. They're both about 9 or 10.
Einstein - is an orange cat, part Maine Coon.
He is a gorgeous cat, and is more closely related to wild cats than most domesticated cats, so he loves to wander the woods outside, and when he was inside, he loved high perches. He can be super lovey, and will come up and rub on your legs, or if you are sitting on the couch, he will butt his head against your arm to get some good head rubbing. He's got beautiful yellow/green eyes, a long fluffy tail, and extra fuzzy feet. Because he has the wild cat genes though, he is pretty independant most of the time though. He's one of those cats that comes to you for love, and you give it to him, he's rolling around loving it, and then he suddenly wraps around your arm like a starfish and scratches you up. Part of this is my fault, because I'm a dog person and I don't know cat body language at all. My husband grew up with cats and has rarely had Einstien do this to him. But I do not think this cat would do well in a home with kids. Despite how aloof I may be making him sound, he will often curl up with the other cat at night in their cat-house, or when the dogs go out in the fenced back yard, Einstein will often run up and smell the dogs, rub on them, and follow them around. Sometimes he gets ito the garage when the dogs are in their cage, and he'll sleep with the dogs for a while. So he has his sweet moments of being a lover. He is the one who is most in need of a home though, because he isn't near as friendly at first as the other cat, and there's no way Einstein would be happy in my tiny apartment. Anyone interested in adopting him can contact me and I'll get you more info or put you in touch with mom.
Joey - is an orange tabby cat with white paws and white mouth. He's a total lover!!!!!! When he was inside, he was a big cat. Now that he's been running around outside all the time though he's much sleeker. I bet he will go plump again inside. He's the kind of cat that wants to be in your lap all the time, he purrs non-stop, and kneads happily. His kneading is super cute, but he does it kinda deep, and I wind up with all kinds of puncture marks on my boobs from Joey's love. He's also developed this cute drooling thing he does when he's really happy. He sheds a lot, so when he gets down off you from all his loving, you will be covered in orange fur. He's skittish around new peopel, but makes friends quickly. He's scared of barking dogs, and will run away before sticking up for himself if a dog is wanting to use him as a plaything.
