I live in Molalla (if you've ever heard of it) :) Nice to see more Oregon people! :D
What's Food Fight? Where is it? I've never heard of that..

Yes I've hard of Molalla :)
Food Fight is a little vegan grocery store in SE portland (see: http://www.foodfightgrocery.com/ )
It's very small, but completely vegan and they've go things like Vegan Marshmellows that are hard to find other places.
I'm a big fan of The Daily Grind which is a bigger natural foods market but it still as down to earth and good. They've got a big Vegan bakery section which I love!

Everyone's heard of Molalla! b/c of the rodeo, of course. :p
I only went to daily grind once... it was really dirty and I didn't feel like shopping there because of that. Though I should have given it a 2nd try, I guess... maybe I just went there when someone was out or they were really busy or something. I love that area of portland, though.
I think, though, that I miss the microbreweries the most! My DH and i used to love sitting in the beer gardens at Lompoc or Produce Row, or going to Bridgeport... I am going back in january & can't wait! yay seasonal beers!! :D

Wher's Mollala?I'm new.And since you guys know Portland, what is fun to do there for a daytrip?

Oh boy! Well, what do you want to do? Do you like outdoorsy stuff? If you do, there's a book called "Wild in the City" that has all sorts of day hikes & outdoorsy things you can do as day trips/walks/adventures. It's a great book that is full of a love for the Portland area. :)
But it really depends on what you want to do - you can do a day trip to the coast. Seaside is a good spot, as is Pacific City. And, if you're lacto-veg, you could stop at the Tillamook cheese factory -- and see cows happily grazing (though I'm not sure whether they use rBST).
Or take a trip up the Columbia gorge. If you haven't done the scenic highway you MUST do it - take I-84 to exit 17, take a right off the exit, go over the freeway, and make a left at the Plaid Pantry. That's the columbia highway. Follow it along the gorge and make stops at the scenic points - lovely viewpoints and waterfalls. That's the area I grew up in, and I know and love it well.
Go a bit further up the gorge and cross the Bridge of the Gods and read about the native american legends about Mt. Hood (Wy'east) and the bridge.
Or go to Silver Falls. There's a 5-mile trail loop in the state park, which is about 75 minutes SE of portland, and makes for a great day hike - and you see about 7 big waterfalls on the hike.
Or go north to Mt St Helens.
Or go to Ashland & marvel at the mouth of the great Columbia.
Or to Eugene & make a surprise visit to ebola. ;)
If you're into ghost towns, Portland has tons of them on the eastern side of the cascades (like Shaniko). Or cross the river into Washington and go to Maryhill mansion (http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/about.htm) and Stonehenge replica. Or go back to the Oregon side near The Dalles and see the "She Who Watches" native american pictograph.
I love oregon. :smitten:
I hated that my dad made me do all that daytrip stuff when I was growing up, but now I'm so glad he did it.

Hi Oregon. I live 90 miles north from you, just 22 miles south of Olympia.
I've got a question for you. I PMed Mollygoat about my little subject here but she says it's always been so as long as she's been young.
However, I'm, ah-hum, (though still gorgeous and thin) much older than 99% of the people on this forum, I've figured. Please don't hate me or dismiss me, though you might when you read this.
My question is ---- when did Portland become PDX? My good friend lives in Portland and she's PDX this and PDX that. But I've never heard of it growing up in Olympia or all the years after.
I admit being a third generation Washingtonian (I don't know if that's the reason) I've always had...you might say downright hostile feelings about Oregon. I know it's stupid. It's just a loyality thing. I lived many years in Seattle. Though born in LA my grandparents on both sides were either born in SW Washington or moved here back in the days when people moved West.
Anyway, I ramble.
Somebody tell me when this PDX thing started up! Or was it before your time? It's the name of your airport, people.

I don't know, cym... it seemed to happen in the late 90s, I think. maybe when everything was "e-this" and "e-that" :p I'm not particularly fond of it myself but it's simpler to type. Especially since I always seem to type "protland" :p
Though I'm not sure if I should actually answer you, you evil Washingtonian. ;) (Actually, I looooooooove Seattle)

Are you in Portland?
You might check out this book - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/097156440X/qid=1103530083/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-5178766-1696964?v=glance&s=books
Also this restaurant on NE 13th & Fremont is supposed to be great for kids (peanut butter & ellie's): http://portland.citysearch.com/customer_website/11631453 though I don't know how veg-friendly it is.
Blue Lake Park was one of my favorites as a kid - it's out in east county, near Fairview & Wood Village. there is, of course, the zoo - and MAX will take you right there. Don't know how you feel about zoos, though, but the Oregon zoo spent a lot of $$ about a decade ago in making "habitats" instead of cages. Even still, it's a zoo...
I'm trying to think of stuff we did when I was a kid but I'm drawing a blank! :( Portland was voted in 2003 as the nation's most "family friendly" city but, not having children of my own, I really can't help you much! :p

I'm about an hour and a half south of Portland. So doing things there will take some forethought but sounds fun for a once in a while thing.

Amy, I'll accept that. See, I've vented here so I don't have to hurt the feelings of my dear PDX friend. I've been down to "PDX" so many times to see her, I have to admit PDX is starting to grow on me (though it's no Seattle - :hi: ) I am going to make it down to Food Fight here coming up.
anybody in the portland area ever order from http://www.organicstoyou.org ? the site is so ambigious i dont know what to expect...
I've done both Organics-to-you and Manic organic. I do not recommmend Organics- to-you. I called them to ask if I could get replacements on two rotten cantaloupes and some rotten tomatoes -- all in one order-- and they never responded and never came back! They didn't refund my bin or pick it up or anything. Super Lame. So Manic organics is my delivery option of choice. They are really nice and very communicative. Hope this helps! Avanya

We use PioneerOrganics, so far so good. I Looked at the Manic site but they didn't really indicate where their organics come from. Didn't know if they're just personal shopping at stores or sourcing direct from farmers.
I plan to add these resources to the Portland Veg site I'm building which will be at Vegpdx.com :)

I got delivery from Manic for a while and I was really happy with the level of personal service. My only complaint was that they didn't seem to get much of their produce locally. It was mostly stuff that I could have gotten at Whole Foods. Of course, the six months that I had the delivery service was mostly in the winter months, so things might be different in the spring and summer.
I just checked out vegpdx.com-- how cool! Thanks for making this site. avanya

Thanks... That 1 page that's up is very much a work in progress. Planning to have complete portland veg restaurant listings, veg options at non veg restaurants and more!
