Another bump.

Wow, there are FIVE Oklahomans on VB right now. That's an all-time record!!!

DON'T YOU GUYS LEAVE!!!! STAY!!! :p

FIVE?!!

Wooooow. I would never expect there to be five vegetarians/vegans in Oklahoma let alone on this board :D
I got my best friend to take a stab at converting from vegetarian to vegan the other day...I'll have to drag him in here too.

For the longest time it was me and one other. Then it was just me for a long time.
A person would join once in a while and then post for about a week and then disappear.

That's more of what I would expect. Hahaha.

Edmond!

Has anybody heard about the new Chipotle burrito place that just opened in south Edmond?
Supposedly they're really veg*n friendly.
On their website they even specify where the rennet in their cheese is from (vegetables)!
Anyways, I'm excited to check it out. I've figured out that I can get a burrito with lettuce, roasted chili-corn salsa, cilantro-lime rice, and roasted vegetables - all vegan. :D

I didn't know there was a Chipotle opening up in Edmond. I've heard good things about it from other VB people in other states. I would say that I hope Norman gets one, but as it is now we have 2 burrito places just on campus corner. We just had a Freebirds World Burrito open this past Monday. I checked out their menu online, and other than their 3 meat choices, all of their products are animal-product free and their cheese is vegetable rennet-based (which doesn't interest me as a vegan but hey..)
I'm going on Friday night to check it out.

I'm still wanting to eat at the Pei Wei that just opened here about a month ago but every time we try to go, it's lined up out the door. I have eaten at the one in NW OKC before and I love it.

I'm not from OK, but I am y'all's neighbor! Anyhoo, just thought I'd put in my 2 cents about Freedbirds World Burrito, as I just ate there for the first time last night.

YUM-E. I had the cayenne tortilla (not hot) and my filling consisted of a little rice, black beans, pico, cilantro, red onions, lettuce, roasted veggies, guacamole, and death sauce. Death sauce wasn't as hot as I expected, but it was good.

I got the 1/2 Bird size and was filled up. The person I went with had the Monster size and couldn't finish it. It was a big ol' honking burrito! And they have a size even bigger than that one, I think it is like 2 pounds! I was telling the dude I was with "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" as in, it probably isn't a good idea to eat a 2 pound burrito, but hey, to each his own!

Next time I go I will probably get the veggie tacos, as those are made with corn tortillas, and pack a bit less of a caloric punch than the other tortillas.

As for Chipotle, we have had them in Texas for a while now, but I haven't been to one in years. I remember I liked it back in the day, but that was before I went veg, so I can't comment as of late...

Anyhoo, good luck with your burrito adventures!

Rooooooooock! I was hoping it would be good. We have a Moe's here in Norman but it's so-so in my opinion. The fillings are always cold and soggy by the time you get the burrito to your table. Their burritos are too big for my tastes too.

I was wondering how spicy they consider hot-hot sauce. I was planning on going for the death or habanero, I will go for the habanero.

As for Pei Wei, I had that too just the other day. It is yum, but I find that they are pretty chincy on the tofu. I ordered extra veggies with it the last time, because I felt slighted after my experience there the time before that. They give you tons of yummy steamed brown rice, but I'd be happier if they gave you just a little more tofu...

Again, just my 2 cents. I'm not really knocking them, I like the food and will definitely go there again when given the chance...

What is it that you ordered? I've had several of their entrees.

I get the Pei Wei Spicy.

Maybe I am just a piggy? I mean, I get plenty full if I eat the ton of rice they give me, but I usually don't wanna eat that much rice. It seems like they give you just a few slivers of tofu. At the little local places they give me more tofu. Some places give too much for one sitting, but IMO Pei Wei doesn't give enough...

I've never had that particular one. I've had the Spicy Korean and a few others and I don't recall them being light on the tofu. But, maybe I'm weird and I like a higher veggies to tofu ratio too.

I definitely agree that the rice is yummy and in that I don't usually even come close to eating that much of the rice that they serve.

I wasn't terribly impressed by their Asian Coconut Curry, just mainly because I've had so many good curries elsewhere. It wasn't bad at all, it just was a tad generic in flavor I thought. About the same with their pad thai.

I like having more veggies than tofu as well, but they didn't give me much of those either, so I ordered "extra." Still wasn't a very large amount of veggies. Maybe it is just the one I go to. Maybe they are cheap bastages!!!!

I stay away from curry. It's an association thing. Several years ago my roommate and I lived next door to some people that apparently used a lot of curry in their cooking. For the first week or so, she and I would be like "mmmm, something smells good!" But when you can smell it coming through the walls 24/7 for years, you kinda lose your appetite for the stuff...

I will try the Spicy Korean. If I don't like it I will drive across the Red and throw it at you. : )

Must be the one you go to. :p

I look forward to seeing how the one here in Norman compares to the one in OKC. I have noticed that a lot of their dishes tend to have a similar base flavor to them, if that makes sense. Like they use the same spices in all of them or whatever.

I can't fathom being sick of curry but I'm willing to take your word for it. Did they at least make some for you during your tenure there?

Hey- nobody told you that you had to try the Spicy Korean. I just mentioned that I'd had it.
And yeah right, you're gonna come to Oklahoma voluntarily....

Actually, I usually go to OK every year for business. And, it may be interesting to note that I quit eating meat on a trip Oklahoma last year. February 4th. I have been meat free for almost one whole year! I quit eggs and dairy approximately 2 weeks later.

So, OK has a special place in my heart henceforth!

We aren't going this year. Kinda sad about it, but I'll get over it. At least I won't have to look at the little veal huts that are littered along the highways on the way.

I haven't been to Pei Wei in a long time... do they have vegan dishes or just vegetarian?

Most of their veg dishes are vegan friendly. I'm not totally sure about their noodles, but as for the dishes that come with rice, yeah. :lick:

Finally, some decent weather! This weekend's temperatures have been awesome. I went out and ran on campus this afternoon and it was perfect weather to be outside.

Let's hope it lasts!

I actually went to Pei Wei this weekend. All of their vegetarian dishes are marked with a leaf next to them. I don't know about vegan friendly though. Their noodles said "egg noodles" so I passed and ordered the teriyaki rice-bowl with tofu & veggies. That was the best tofu I've had! I wish I could cook tofu like that (I'm working on that).

I shouldn't have come here this morning. Now I am craving Pei Wei and the nearest one is still too far away.
