Hi- I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Tulsa Vegetarian Society- I called and e-mailed but could not get a reply back from them. Are there any other vegetarian groups in Tulsa or Broken Arrow that anyone knows about?

well, there is a veggie freak limit the bbq-ing football fans can take.
What is the pratts now? (12 and Lindsey)

Erm, I think it's a "Value Foods" now or something like that. That area is more or less the same, otherwise. More apartments in that part of town than there used to be, and there's a freaking Wal-Mart over there now but otherwise it's probably the same as you remember.

Momma Okie Here,

I have lived here all my life, and I'll bring some things Oklahoman to our attention. I just don't appreciate it if a non-Okie says something against my home state. By non-Okie I mean someone who has never lived here. Just passing through on vacation don't get a person an accurate outlook on the people.

Now Oklahoma people are nice, they just don't in general understand vegan.

Oklahoma doesn't have peace and quiet, it has great buckets of boredom.

Why, we have at least 4 different dialects from one side of the state to the other.

We never know who has won an election in the state until all those little farming counties report. I think they do that just to remind us city folk that we don't run the state all by ourselves.

The Oklahomans celebrate the 1889 land run for free land, while your Indian neighbor puts a sign in his front yard that says, "What's to celebrate. This is the day we got screwed!"

You have the true goat-roper (cowboy) and the redneck and the biker family living in the same block and they all yell at the teen with the booming, block shaking music coming from his souped up, sweeeet, street racer he parks in the garage of his professional-type family's home next door. Of course these are the same people who drop everything, get together, and have fund drives to replace homes which were burned in the grass fires.

....or that were helping after the May tornadoes, or the Murrah building, etc. Helping because help is needed is  with me.

Those same people you mention above, Mom, are also the ones who flock outside to their front yards anytime there is a storm warning or anything remotely resembling "weather". ;) :)

Oh, Mall Wart had opened. I never went.
Jungle Jim's was open.
Is Red Dirt Cafe in Campus Corner alive? I used to go see Travis Linville play (I was his first mandolin student, no reflection on him)
Also loved the Blue Door OKC.
Misal had closed their CC location and become a lousy restaurant.

I remember Jungle Jim's.

Far as I know, yes, Red Dirt Cafe is still there and bands still play there. I liked going there when it used to be Liberty D's. You'd never know that half of the things that used to be on campus corner were ever there these days. Including Jungle Jim's. I think that space was a discount cigarette store for a while, actually. I want to say that now it's a "importy/furniture" store kind of place.

Misal has one restaurant, on the West side. I haven't been to that one, I only ever went to the campus location. I've heard a few people say that it's not what the other one was, but I dunno.

Just giving this thread a token bump-up as a reminder that there is life here in the middle of things. I know L2K and I are still kicking, but you never know when someone new might pop up.

Hi, Mom, if you are reading this. I'm still alive. Being a (mostly) good boy. :p

How do you like all of this great weather we've had this week, Mom? It's feeling more and more like fall is here, especially in the mornings.
I've been enjoying the cooler temp's in the afternoon too, when I go running. It's also nice to be able to open a window at night and let the night air into my bedroom.
I didn't mind this summer's weather, but I'm already loving the fall.

Hi Ya'll okie here! I live in Checotah, and have just opened a restaurant in Muskogee. I would live to get involved in a little vegokie group! I have been lacto-veg for most of my life (27 years) but really don't do dairy very much- never milk or eggs, but sometimes bread with eggs. I love Oklahoma- not for the culture, but for my family, friends, cost of living (I have lots of animals including horses) and I doubt I could afford them or the land anywhere but here! If you guys are ever in the area, please visit my restaurant Imported Flair (hwy 69) or my website www.importedflair.com
We are omni but have some killer tofu dishes, hummus, ect. We can make anything suitable for anyone (almost!) I eventually would like to open a full vegetarian place, but in Muskogee I know I would lose my Ass!

Nice to meet fellow okies!!!
April

Well, I'll be in Tulsa later this week....first time back in the States in nearly three years. Would love recommendations on where to take my parents out to dinner. My mom would love to try vegan food and my dad will enjoy making fun of the "hippie" food (but he'd also eat it).

Well, I ate at the Be Le Vegetarian restaurant in Tulsa nearly every day with my mother and we took my dad there once. Although their name says "Vegetarian", there are only two items on the menu that are not vegan. They are VERY HEAVY on the fake meats; nearly every dish has some. But, the dishes that do not...wow....extremely delicious. They declined my suggestion to open a branch in my neighborhood. :(

Good to know, DMZdogs. Maybe they'll change their mind and open one near you (and another in Norman! :) )

Hi Miss_Anthropic :hi:

Nice to meet another Oklahoman here!
Whereabouts in Oklahoma are you? (If you are comfortable saying so)

I'm a Norman-ite, born in MWC and grew up mostly in southern OKC.

Anyhow, welcome to VB! Hope you enjoy!

Wonder Randy, check out youtube for some Steamboat shows of the Rangers.
Old buddies of mine.

as for restaurants, there's Indian galore these days, and a fair amount of decent Asian of other flavors.

Now, I could never afford HideAway's, but I ate more than my share of Pizza Shuttle.
In Norman, I ate Atomic Burrito, taco hell and various Indian places.
oh, the Vietnamese place on Jenkins was Kim Son for years, changed names in 2001.
Shiva's Snacks and Sweets was 99 percent veg. Mena-ji cooked chicken for the buffet for the Muslim students. I understand she's gone.
There was a vagean place around the corner from her, also on Jenkins. Became a burger joint, natch.

Friends in Jacob Fred Jazz Odessey rapped in the old days when they had 7 members about India Palace in Tulsa.
We went. it was decent.

Jacob Fred!! I totally forgot about those guys!!

Yeah, I used to party with the Rangers, via my Hideaway connection. Hung out with them at Dead Shows, etc...

India Palace was ok...

I totally miss Kim Son. It changed names a few times and now it's recently become a Thai restaurant.
I am meaning to get by there to try it. There are now 3 thai restaurants in Norman, crazy eh?

Hi Brandon, thanks for the welcome! :hi: I was born in OKC and I've lived in Del City most of my life. :D

Did you go to school in Del City? I went to Townsend Elementary from Kindergarten through 4th grade then we moved to S. OKC. I had relatives that still lived in the Del until about 4-5 months ago.
