I used to be a regular at most of the 'Lips shows in Norman back in the '90/'91/'92 era. A friend of mine worked at Harry Bear's in Moore ( @ that name) when Mike Ivens (the bass player) worked there also.
The world gets smaller every day. :)
If you are a camper, our state parks are awesome. Vacations don't cost all that much here. The cost of living is much lower that the costal areas. We have more lake shoreline than the USA. The Corp of Engineers came in about 35 years ago and make small lakes all over the state. The joke is if you tipped Oklahoma up, the run off would drown Texas. Boating and water sports at a big deal here. I would recommend the eastern 2/3 of the state for just the beauty of nature.

I think it's time for a lil' bump for this thread. If for no other reason, the Oklahoma weather has been SO crazy lately! Snow, then 60 degrees...then cold...then sunny......
I've been wondering if my Dad has eaten his words that "global warming is an illusion created by liberal tree-huggers" yet.......
Wait. He moved to Arkansas. Nevermind.
Anyhow, Hi Life2k, and WR and the rest of the pro-Okie folk.
Is today beautiful or what? The sun is so bright it lights your very soul, and turns crabby old ladies into poets.

Heck yeah, it's gorgeous. Sitting by my open window, enjoying the breeze....watching all 3 of my cats try to cram into the same windowsill.....
Here's to spring in February! (of course, it will probably mean that we'll get 10 inches of rain next week and temp.'s in the 20's......but it's worth it IMO)
:D
I have family all over oklahoma. Most live in Edmond.. I visit there alot, also.
I'm really surprised there are veg*ans in OK, but perhaps I shouldn't be. My brother and his family live in Edmond. We're not from there, it's just where he and his wife ended up after getting married. My niece was born in OKC. My brother is one of the most anti-vegetarian people you will ever meet. I hate having somebody like that in my family. That's why I don't visit them very often. They've lived there about nine years and I've only visited about 3 or 4 times.
I remember when we visited the Nat'l Cowboy Hall of Fame, I thought it would be boring, but it turned out to be a nice museum with a lot of really interesting Western art. Who has been there?
BTW: How do those of you who live in OK manage restaurants? Just wondering in case I do visit again.

Amy, it's not easy. There are a handful of restaurants here in Norman that I feel ok with going to. Norman is a college town, so there are a couple of places here with more than one veg*n option, but to be honest it's not a vegan-friendly town even at that. But, there are a few options.....provided you don't mind a salad and fries meal once in a while for the sake of going out with other friends.
And I've been to the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Pretty neat, but I wouldn't go there very often. Cowboy culture isn't my thing, as you can imagine since I grew up here and all....;)

I'm FROM Oklahoma....does that count for anything? Have parents still there, so will probably end up visiting there eventually....when I do, I'll be asking for help on where to shop and eat in Tulsa.

Heck yeah it counts for something! I'm afraid I won't be of much help in regards to Tulsa, but I assume we have most of the same things here that they do in Tulsa. So, in other words, L2K and I might be able to give you some pointers. :)

I haven't lived in Tulsa for about 9 years, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Hideaway for great pizza! If you go to the Harvard location, you'll see a huge collage on the wall that I made.

Okay, one day all of you Oklahoma escapees have to return at some point. If/When that happens, you all better get your behinds to Norman to say hello to me! I'll give you the grand tour of, um, uh, town...or something.
First round of  is on me too.

I can't say I've ever been to Lawton, myself, so I am not much help. I wouldn't assume you'll be doomed...however you may well find that a lot of things that you are used to living in NYC are much different here. :)

i lived in wichita for a few years and spent a lot of time in surrounding "less urban" areas, so i shouldn't be TOO surprised.
ooh, there's a wild oats in tulsa (i've never been to one!) so i could take big trips for stocking up. it says there's a nature's corner in lawton - anyone ever heard of one?

Gah! When are we going to get a Wild Oats in Norman??!! No fair!
Never heard of a Nature's Corner. I assume it's some sort of HFS?

Lawton is a LONG way from Tulsa...

Isn't Lawton one of those military base towns?

Hello to all you Oklahoma residents. I don't live there presently, but I lived in both Lawton and Ft. Sill when I was very young. Ft. Sill is the military base adjacent to Lawton, DMZdogs.

Norman may not have a Wild Oats, but there is a pretty decent health food store on the northwest side of town. I can't remember the name (Dobson's???), but it's located on the east side of 34th Ave just north of the intersection with Robinson. I have found that place to be a blessing when my work calls me to Norman, although it isn't cheap.
And The Earth on Flood St. has a fantastic veggie burger and super smoothies!

Yeah, I go to Dodson's. It's just down the street from where I live.
I used to live about a block from the Earth for about 10 years to boot.
Dodson's is a bit pricey, but they have a good selection. Except that they don't carry nutritional yeast, but I've complained enough about that in other threads.
DCVeg, how often do you get called to Norman?

eh, i'm slow. but jollie's all over it for me :) yea, lawton is a military town.
thanks all for instilling a wee bit of hope in OK for me! :)

usually every May, but the event that brings me there probably won't be held this year, as that group moves to a new facility around that time. I'll give a holler next time I'm down that way.
