Just wanted to let Clevelanders know that a guy on my campus has been trying to set up a vegetarian meetup through meetup.com. http://vegetarian.meetup.com/ (find Cleveland)
Please go there, register, and vote for a location if you are interested. Then, once the location is decided, it is important that you RSVP. That is because the last meeting was cancelled because not enough people actually rsvp'd at the site even though more people might have been planning on attending.

Hey Clevelanders!
Has anyone been to the Soul Vegetarian restaurant? I don't know exactly where it is, but it sounds interesting. BTW, I'm officially a resident of the area now!
Ooops! I just tried to post here before logging in, so if this is a double post, I apologize.
I was wondering if any of you Clevelanders have tried the Vegetarian Soul restaurant. I'm not sure where it is, but some guy in a camera store was telling me about it. By the way, I'm an official resident of the greater Cleveland area now! :)
I just looked at Geauga Lake's site now that it is no longer 6 flags. They said that 6 flags took all the animals with them so there are no animal shows anymore. So looks like those of us concerned with that can go back!

Looking back at previous msgs it doesn't look like there is anyone from NW Ohio. I'm just south of Findlay. Unbelievably we have a vegan healtfood store/"restaurant" in Findlay. They also have a store in Bowling Green. Squeakers has great food! They were even doing a breakfast buffet on Saturdays in Findlay.

Cleveland counts for plenty. I happen to know you can get Woo City "ice cream" (also known as "Woo Fu" in the Cleveland area. That incredibly decadant vegan treat ought to earn you double points for something. Is there still an Ethiopian restaurant in Cleveland? It's been waaaaay tooooo many years since I ate there.

I can't remember the name for certain, but I found this reastaurant listed: Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant. I'm pretty sure that's it. It was really awsome inside with thached roof huts, inside that really added to the atmosphere. It was a little east of downtown, maybe 2 miles. Great vegetarian sampler!!!!! The food there was as good as the Blue Nile, a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI. But, it has been probally 10 years since I've been there.
Have you tried the Woo City "ice cream" that I mentioned? Here is there web site: www.woocity.com They are a very cool company, with an out of this world product!

Heinens Markets- All Locations, Flying Fig-Ohio City, Fulton Bar & Grill- Ohio City, Ritz Carlton - Downtown, Blue Point - Downtown, Substance - Cleveland, Vivo at the Hyatt-Downtown, Sage Bistro - Ohio City, 3 Birds - Cleveland, Fuel Lounge - Cleveland, Sans Souci -Downtown , Fahrenheit - Tremont, Nature's Bin - Cleveland Heights
Those are the locations they show for the Cleveland area. There website lists other areas too.
You haven't lived a complete life till you get to try the "Chocolate Fu" the other vegan flavor is "Vanilla Bean Fu" - haven't tried it, but I have no doubt it's out of this world too.
Their sorbet flavors are incredible too!!! Lime & Coconut, Mango & Amoretto Peach are superb!
They are also a very cool company.
I'm bummed to hear the Ethiopian restaraunt might not be there. I'll just have to find another cool place to check out.
Do you have any recomendations?
Ethiopian restaurant? Not sure...do you remember the name??Empress Taytu.

Thank you very much! Now I just need to find an excuse to go to Cleveland. Actually I'll be there tomorrow morning @ 7am- but I'll be driving a semi-tractor trailer. I don't remember them having that big of a parking lot & I don't think they would open up for just me. I'm really missing out on this trip! The Lowes store in Willoughby that I'm delivering to has a very good Chinese restaurant across the street- but it too will be closed.

You might find that some places don't carry the two vegan flavors. I ran into that when I was in Wooster a while back. The only place that was open that night had the full line of dairy based ice cream & sorbet - but neither the chocolate or vanilla vegan version. Hopefully the larger Cleveland market has enough vegans that there is enough demand.

What kind of veggie fare does it have?
This could be an answer to my prayers because my family lives near there and the only food we can all eat together near their house is pizza.
(The chinese places near them have zero veg food except veggie chow mein)

I expect everyone who has posted in this thread to be at VeBoCon or I'm going to be very upset. :notvegan:

I'll gladlly check on the name tomorrow. If you are at the east end of the store (garden center side) it is just across the street in a little strip shopping center. I think there's a pet supply store, maybe a computer store... It's been a while since I've delivered to that store, I'm only doing the truck driving part time now.
They had a veggie stir fry with tofu, and a few other veggie dishes. I think there was one with eggplant. I have eaten there 3 times. Each time a different dish. They were all quite good.

Re: VeBoCon
It might work out, but there are a couple things that need to fall into place first. So that would be in the supper undecided catagory.

Thalia: The Chinese Restaraunt is "Hong To". It's just across the street from the Lowes store, on the east side (garden center side). Sorry that I didn't have a chance to get the hours or any more info, I ended up being in a bit of a hurry.
Hey Buckeyes! I'm not from Ohio, but I just got this "Veg-Friendly Ohio Guide" in the mail & thought y'all might be interested too. The website listed on the cover is www.vegohio.com it's looks like there's an electronic version of the guide there.

To everyone living in Ohio but not going to Cedar Point with us - consider this your last warning...
I am writing down your names. Since we'll have most of Sunday free we're going to trek around your great state and tofu scramble your houses if you don't show up!

LOL Michael. I can just picture a whole group of you showing up at my apartment door and my husband saying "Honey, there's some veg*ns here for you." Hee hee
I'm not going because of two things. First, money. I'm poor :) Second, I only just joined this board and I don't know any of you well. I'd feel like sort of an intruder. But I hope you all have a wonderful time! And hey - there's always another year :)

Well the first I can understand but the second is just crazy talk. What better way to get to know everyone? Next year we'll probably arrange something on one of the coasts so if you miss out on this one you might be sorry. You'll think "Oh man, I should have went last year when it was practically in my backyard." Like I said, if it's a money issue that's completely understandable. I'm just teasing. :)

im planning a wedding for next year in cincinnati. yay!!! :)
it will be held at the cincinnati nature center. if anyone has any vendors they can recommend i would be delighted! if you know anyone who does videography, flowers, cakes (doesnt have to be vegan or anything, just regular old cakes!), alterations, dj, ANYTHING wedding related on the side then please let me know :) id much rather give my money to someone who could really use it rather than some typical wedding business.
i am especially interested in finding some local musicians (classical type and/or guitar).
thanks!
It is July and I wanna talk about Cleveland with everyone here!! I will rattle a few tidbits since my last post:
Teahouse Noodles (East 6th) is officially my favorite meal in Cleveland. I could live on their food for the rest of my life 3 times a day. MsruthieB, I know you like it too. I get the rice with tofu, beans and no sauce. I put soy sauce on separately. But damnit, the bokchai, snap peapods, water chestnuts, carrots, and the other veggies make me drool every single time. Too bad their 2 other locations (w. 25th and e. 12th) closed. Their veggie rolls, their noodle salad, their homemade tea, and their fruit salad are all so ****ing good.. I swear, this is the best vegetarian/vegan place in Cleveland, and the best part is, almost all of their sauces and menu selections are vegan.
Soul Vegetarian on Coventry closed a while back (2003), but they (as far as I know) still have a location close to Shaker Heights located at Kilamanjaro. They are 100% vegan. The location on Cedar/Lee closed and moved to Coventry, but that one closed permanently and is now occupied by an Indian restaurant. In case you didn't know, the folks who run Soul Vegetarian have a close connection to a religion in Africa.. I can't recall the details, but they are strict vegans.
Web Of Life in Westlake has the supermarket section plus a deli and room to sit down at eat in. They recently started carrying Tofurkey's Philly Style Steak, which is a nice treat (if you want to make a veggie philly sub).
Panini's in CSU (which I suggested for their pasta salad) closed in May and I believe the owner re-located a new restaurant on Coventry, called McNulty's. I'm assuming the food will be Panini's style, since Panini's on Coventry also closed, but Sam McNulty ran a Panini's for many years and kept their style food when he changed Panini's to Cafe 101.
On Euclid Avenue in front of CSU is Cafe Ah Roma which has a variety of vegetarian sandwiches, such as the red pepper hummus sandwich. It is a cafe/coffee shop with a beautiful patio located on the property of a church. Very vegetarian friendly.
Their is a new salad bar deli in the lobby of the downtown US Bank Centre (the newer gothic black building in the playhouse district). I haven't had it yet, but I assume there is plenty to choose from.
I found a new vegetarian/vegan supermarket in Middleburgh Heights at Southland Shopping Center. It is located near Gabrielle Brothers, Office Max and Burlington Coat Factory. I forget the name of this place, but it is pretty big and has a deli section too.
I was at an Egyptian place on Lorain and West 117th in Cleveland/Lakewood that served customers a big boogah pipe to inhale incented smoke out of. My friend is from Turkey and he felt it was a nice place to take me. I had fun, but it was very weird and I didn't feel too good afterwards, but on the way back, I noticed a Vietnamese restaurant with a neon sign that said "vegetarian". So, I will be trying to find out more next time I drive by.
Super Size Me is playing at Cedar Lee. I saw it and liked the film. Now is a good time to see it, as this is the only theatre in NE Ohio showing it. It is about a guy who eats McDonalds 3 times a day for a month straight. His girlfriend is vegan too.
And to the new Cleveland member asking about an Asian grocery store, have you tried the one in Chinatown??? Chinatown is very small and basic, but there is a supermarket there that I know people shop at for Asian food. It is located around E. 30th and St. Claire (I believe).. the whole district is located to the north of CSU, just south of I-90 around E-25 thru E-35. I really never explored the area, so don't know too much about it. It's definately no Chinatown like the one in NYC... hehehe
Johnny Mango --- mmmm, anyone in Cleveland better know this place. W. 25th area for great Caribbean style vegetarian dishes. Their juices are superb.
That's all for now, and I hope this sparks some talk in the Ohio board!
Hey MsRuthieB, I think I will be checking out Au bon pain.. I always drive by it, but was unaware.. so thanks for telling me. I have yet to try this greek place too. I will let you know what I think of them.. I probably will try them out this week. By the way, I go to Teahouse Noodles about 4-5 times a week (currently) so, I wouldn't be surprised if we have been in there at the same time.. considering they do have short hours and the lunch hour is when they are busiest. Ya, Panini's is cool, I like their fries and cole slaw (but it is a greasy joint).. and they also have (or had one on W. 6), the flats location closed and so did the CSU location and Coventry's. But I know they have a new one in the Great Northern vicinity, and just opened one in Independence near Rockside Road and plus there is the one in Berea (Baldwin Wallace) and Lakewood on Detroit Rd.
