Hi everyone, I'm currently in Durham NC studying at Duke. I really should know more than I do about Raleigh/Chapel Hill, but I don't. Oh well. :)
And for the record, Durham has a whole bunch of awesome vegetarian/vegan restaurants/stores.

Ooh! I'm a veggie in Raleigh! I think it's tough around here, but I'm a New England girl originally, so . . . Anyway, Whole Foods has this GREAT mock chicken salad and I just discovered their "dairy" section the other day, but the store was so packed I didn't have the tolerance to look at it then. And it's sort of a hassle for me to get there cause I'm up near Wake Forest. I would say good produce is hard to find around here. Boo.
I miss Trader Joes!!!! :(

Another NC semi-vegetarian here... My other half is more so than I am, we do it for health reasons mostly. We're members of the Very Vegetarian Society of Winston-Salem (veryvege.bravehost.com), we meet the first Tuesday of each month for a vegan potluck dinner at the Miller Park rec center, and usually have a speaker. Any of yall nearby, come by and give us a try- we'd like to get more young people to come out. James Lipton said we're "scrumtrilescent"! ;-)
Anyway, we haven't tried Boba House in Greensboro yet, but we really liked the Grapevine when it was around- and are really sad now that it's not. We also drag a huge group of friends to the Peaceful Dragon in Charlotte for a semi-annual reunion every spring and fall- a small feat considering most of us aren't vegetarians of any kind!
We also like Angelica's in Boone and the Laughing Seed in Asheville, as well as Cafe' Max and Rosie's (although we haven't been back since it was sold or re-launched or whatever).

Hey all! I am originally from the west but I just moved to Clayton, NC (south of Raleigh for those who are new to NC or will be moving here soon). I have only been here 1.5 years so I don't have too much info to share but there is a really good vegetarian-options restaurant, The Irregardless (sp?) Cafe between downtown Raleigh and NC State. Supposedly they have been a vegetarian restaurant for decades but recently began serving meat - though they did maintain their vegetarian food, thankfully. The place is a bit nicer and would probably be a good date restaurant. And they have live music by hosting small musical groups (we had violinists <sp?> playing the night I went).
If anyone in the Raleigh area knows of other good vegetarian restaurants I would love to hear about them! I've done a lot of work in Durham and Chapel Hill and they seem to have pretty good veg. places, but I hate the distance from my house to there (pollution, traffic, etc) :( Any advice or tips that someone from the area can give would be appreciated! It's so nice to see there are more vegetarian/vegans in the area!

Also, have any of you checked out or been involved with Carolina Animal Activists Together (CAAT)? Their website is www.caat-nc.org I have been a "member" since I moved here but I have never gotten myself involved in anything they do yet. And there is a circus protest this Saturday for the evil Barnum-Bailey circus BS that is going on in Raleigh. I was curious to know if anyone is involved with them or not. They are big into vegetarianism too. :)
hey yall.. i'm out west in Asheville :)
If you're in the area you MUST go to Rosetta's Kitchen downtown...
it is such yummy, almost all-vegan selections, and really good prices, not to mention supporting a local establishment :)
i just can't get enough of their peanut butter tofu hehe

Was happy to see this ~ I live in Asheville, and this is by far my favorite place to eat. So Yummy!

Charlotte here.....
Peaceful Dragon is by far my favorite restaurant.
Ru-Sans has a gigantic menu with tons of vegan sushi items.
Lots of great Indian restaurants, and the world's best oriental food market.
The farmer's market is awesome.
I love Talleys!
I'm so happy that they are FINALLY planting a Whole Foods here.
I despise the music scene in Charlotte. For a big city, it is absolutely, ridiculously non-existent. All bands skip here and head straight to Raleigh, Carrboro, or, lately, Asheville.
As a whole, I don't care for Charlotte too much and would like to move further north, or somewhere with more diversity. Things are too modern and "rich" here for me. I find it to be a very materialistic city, and getting more so with each year that passes.
(sorry to seem down on charlotte, it's okay....sort of.....i guess)

:hi: come to raleigh...we'd love to have you!!
seriously...this place is great...
i would also recommend asheville...it has more strictly veg restaurants than raleigh does...there are quite a few in durham....but durham scares me...lol...it seems to be turning into a violent place....
but....rambling....
again....i vote raleigh and asheville!

:beatnik: Soy is southbound yet again! Veggie food companies gush about relatively tiny Asheville in the same breath as Berkeley. What's more, Asheville, which recently hosted Vegetarian Summerfest, offers four all-vegetarian restaurants-and a horde of eateries that are happy to create meatless fare. With the recent opening of Asheville's fourth vegetarian restaurant, Rosetta's, you can eat at a vegetarian restaurant any time you want.
Want to head for a veg friendly pub/pizza place instead? You've got several to choose from. Barley's Taproom features a veg friendly menu including soy cheese pizza, jerk tofu sandwiches, a veggie burger, and excellent black bean hummus. Or to take in a movie with your brew and soy cheese pizza, head over to the Asheville Pizza Company. Or try the Mellow Mushroom, where you'll also find a great selection of beer, soy cheese pizzas, tempeh and tofu sandwiches. Another pizza place offering soy cheese is Nick 'n Willie's.
You can devour some tasty vegan baked goods at the City Bakery on Charlotte Street or at Earth Fare, the bustling health food supermarket located in the Westgate Shopping Center. Earth Fare also offers vegetarian and vegan hot food options as well as the best salad bar around. Veggie dog options abound on the streets of Asheville almost all of the many coffee shops offer soymilk as well. At least two ice cream shops offer soy ice cream and/or rice ice cream. The ice cream shops are The Hop, near UNCA, and Sweet Heaven on historic Montford Avenue.
Looking for ethnic food? Most of the two dozen plus Chinese, Japanese, and Thai restaurants offer many excellent vegetarian selections. Several have regularly-scheduled vegetarian buffets. And don't pass up Mother India, Salsa's, and Urban Burrito. In a hurry? Check out the tofu sub at Two Guys Hoagies, which has two locations around town. There are so many vegetarian options in Asheville; it's hard to find a restaurant that doesn't offer a good vegetarian or vegan meal. No wonder Self magazine found Asheville the happiest city in America.

My boyfriend lives in wilmington so I'm down there all the time there isn't much in the way of exceptional veg food but you won't starve, Flaming Amy's buritto barn is pretty good and pretty cheep, some locations even have signs warning vegans that the chips are fried in the same oil as the meats. This chinese resturant called Dragon Garden has nothing vegan on the buffet and is pretty crappy in most respects but has really really good "family style tofu", Badobo's mongolian grill has a fix it yourself and then we cook it kind of thing so you know exactly what's in it and if you go during off hours they'll clean the grill for you before they cook your food. My b/f also claims to have found a vegetarian sandwich shop but I haven't been there yet so I don't know how good it is.
I'm going to spend a week in topsail in july so I'll report back if there is anything awesome there.

I didn't know you lived in charlotte, I waitress at the Peaceful Dragon you should say hi next time you come in. I'm the only girl waitress with brown hair so I shouldn't be hard to spot.
I'm also a huge ru-sans fan, I can eat as much as I want there and I don't think my bill has ever gone over like $15 for 2 people.

I used to live in Wilmington for about 2 years, and just was down there a few weeks ago. There always is India Mahal on S. College (near Wrightsville Ave.), they serve some good food. I don't know if Molly's is still there, but downtown used to have a vegetarian/health food restaurant.
A favorite of mine was Elizabeth's Pizza on Market St., which does have a lot more than Pizza there, but once my girlfriend-at-the-time ordered some pasta and they gave her meat sauce...
The Carolina Cantina on Market (near College Rd.) serves up good veggie tacos or burritos. I do NOT suggest El Cerro Grande on 16th (they once served me stuffed peppers which they said they 'cleaned the meat out of and restuffed with veggies' ... )
I'm not sure which Chinese Restaurant was behind Harris Teeter on Kerr Ave., but they (in 1999) seemed most able to prepare a vegetarian Chinese meal. Other places kept putting sneaky meat in my food (not cleaning out the wok from a previous order well enough).
Most of my suggestions and experience come from 1999, but I was just at India Mahal a few weeks ago.
I'm planning on living in Wilmington off and on during the winters and here in NY during the summers.

Okay, Amy's Flaming Burrito in Wilmington has poisoned me...
I at there several times so far and they have good tofu burritos. I ordered a 'Tree Hugger' and it has tofu chunks in it. I got to the end and something didn't taste right, I spit it out and saw a chicken chunk.
I haven't had meat on purpose in my mouth for about 14 years. Only accidentally once about 9 years ago. They violated my body and I may have eaten some chicken as a result.
I'm quite angry, especially when they say 'Oh we have several vegetarians working here.' This makes me violent.

Charlotte NC residents, I just wanted to let you guys know that The Peaceful Dragon will be closing the resturant on Dec.23, so eat there while you can (and say hi to me, i'm the only girl waitress with brown hair, and I go by Laura)
The chef, Geoff Bragg, is going to open his own vegetarian resturant called "Meet" sometime soon so be on the look out for it.

I thought their last night was September 30?? I saw in their online newsletter they were closing in December, but signs on their tables say they are closing Sept 30. I'm confused.

Originally they were closing in Dec. but about 2 weeks ago they let the staff know we were closing on sept.30. It was kind of a bad surprise for us all :(

I live in Charlotte (I got to UNCC), and I'm a huge fan of the Home Economist, as well as the farmer's market out by the Airport.
There's a Vegetarian / Vegan Indian resturant called UDIPI right across from my apartment near UNCC, which is really good, and it's pretty reasonably priced, too :)
