I wanted to let everyone know about the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, especially if you live in the New York area. CAS is in the Hudson Valley, about 2 hrs. north of NYC. It's a haven for abused, abandoned, or homeless farm animals and horses. there's cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, mini horses, donkeys, geese, and all of them come from really awful situations. Maybe from a horribly abusive farm, or on the way to slaughter, or unique situations like when a chicken was stuffed into someone's mailbox in NYC as a joke. Now they are healing, physically and emotionally, so that CAS is a very HAPPY PLACE! There is also a full roster of spring/summer events there, like talks about vegetarian issues and veggie cooking classes.

You can find out more from their excellent website. That's at www.casanctuary.org. You can find out about their events, their animals, veggie info, etc. It's such a cool place!

Odd, I never posted here... thought I had...

I'm in Syracuse, NY, best restaurants:

1. India House in Liverpool, NY (few minutes from the Carousel Mall)

2. Alto Cinco (Serving Vegan and Non-Vegan Mexican)

3. Munjed's (Middle Eastern next to Alto Cinco)

4. Aladdin's (SU Hill area, Middle Eastern & Mediterrainian)

5. Syra-Juice (Down the street from Aladdin's

I don't eat really anywhere else anymore, all the Thai places I don't trust since I was lied to by the most famous one:Erawan.

I'm going to Brooklyn in 2 weeks, and I can't wait to try the foodswings place (vegan fast food)..has anyone here tried it? It was supposed to open 3/31.
I printed out a LOOOOONG list of other veggie-friendly restaraunts, but I thought I'd ask you all which ones are the best.
I want to go out one night to a nice place (it's my bf and i's 2 year anniversary  ), so I want to make it special. Any ideas?

I like it alot. As a matter of fact, I'm going again tomorrow. I really liked the chicken parm sandwich, the southern fried drumsticks, turkey club sandwich, caesar salad, and the key lime pie. I had taken some stuff to go, that's why I got to try so many things in one visit.

If I could easily live anywhere, I might choose NYC just for the amount of all-vegetarian restaurants, bakerys, and more. There are plenty of vegan friendly places to eat, just punch in 'NYC vegan' in google, I'm sure there are lots of great resources to find online.

Interesting number fun, I'm VeggieBoards user #4079, and you are #4790, hehe.

I'm heading to NYC on June 5th - woohoo! Unfortunately, I can't spend too much time there 'cause I have to be back in NJ for a family bbq. Fortunately, I got my folks to try some healthier/veggie alternatives (i.e. boca burgers :) ).
It's a start.

Anywho, I know there are many vegetarian restaurants, but what I REALLY want to try is Peanut Butter & Co. (YUM peanut butter  )

Has anyone been there?? Sorry if this has already been discussed (I haven;t read this thread). Comments?

hey, i live in nyc, and used to live down the street from this place. if you love peanut butter, you'll definitely enjoy it. they make all their own, and have several different varieties. their menu is full of options ranging from traditional sandwiches to the more off-the-wall. it's fun. oh, and you can buy jars of their different peanut butters to take home with you.

hey sash. well, i don't know what uk peanut butter is like (don't think i've ever eaten it when i've been there) but be aware that the peanut butter served at pb&co is of the fresh-ground variety, and not the processed, sugar-laden u.s. brand-name stuff like jif, skippy, etc..

let's see, some other places you may be interested in checking out... there's a vegan cafe on the lower east side (on rivington st.) called teany (as in "tea new york") that serves, you guessed it, lots of tea, as well as plenty of good vegan snacks and desserts. it gets press because it's owned by moby, but it's actually pretty good.

as someone else in this thread mentioned, there are tons of veg*n places in the city. some other ones that i think are great are gobo (west village, on sixth ave.), anjelika kitchen (east village), josie's (upper west side), and if you're ever in a pinch there are a few locations of a restaurant called zen palate around the town. not the most exciting food, but definitely decent and totally veg*n.

these are just a very few suggestions - hope they help! have fun, and let us know what you end up enjoying.

Thanks Silverfish! I LOVE natural peanut butter  (though I do make sure to limit my serving consumption), so this is great! Hopefully, I'll get a chance to check it out and maybe some other restaurants as well. I'll post when I get back on June 8th - woohoo! :vebo:

Hey everybody... So, in a couple of weeks I'll be moving to New York City for the summer (permanently if my boyfriend and I find jobs!) I've already scoped out the restaurant situation, but I'm wondering about places to buy vegan products like personal care and household products. Also, clothes and shoes... We are on a tight budget, but I'm just thinking ahead to when I'll need to shop for things. Getting stuff on line is expensive with shipping and all, and anyway it's fun to shop. I figure NYC has to have plenty of places...

So, any good ideas for places to shop?

Welcome to NYC rij!

What borough are you moving to?
What neighborhood?

There are places to shop everywhere between health food stores, and the natural products that supermarkets now carry, but prices and selection varies depending on the area.

Hi! Well, I'll be on the upper-west-side for the summer apartment-sitting in the 70's. We want to start looking for our own apartment in Brooklyn, though, but we'll know better after looking around. I grew up in Jersey about 20 minutes from the city, so I know my way around, but this will be the first time living right there...

The one thing I know about is the Whole Foods at Columbus Circle. We went there a few weeks ago when in the city. It's awesome...

But, yeah, I'm thinking about shoe stores and things like that. I became a vegan only recently, so I need to start making some changes in the wardrobe soon.

Oh, for pete's sake, I live on West 85th street! LOL

Yes Whole foods is great for their own brands, but almost everything else is overpriced.

Westerly Natural Foods is on 8th Ave & 55th and they are priced the best for vitamin supplements (they have their own label) and they also have good sales, but again, lots of things are overpriced.

Fairway Natural (upstairs from Fairway) on Bway & 76th Street is your best bet. The prices are right and the selection is great.
They close at 1am....

Two blocks up is Westside Natural, open 24 hours, which is like a wanna-be Fairway gourmet market....good for off hours last minute shopping.

Gristedes in the Ansonia Bldg on Bway (75th /76th Street) is the best supermarket in the area....
Its enourmous, Its open 24 hours, and they have a new aisle dedicated to soy products and vegetarian food. Over a dozen different brands of soymilk.
Natural cleaning products priced right....Its great!

For shoes....I always just go to Payless, there are locations at 34th ST & Bway, 34th & 8th, 38th & 5th....If you want designer shoes, start at Macy's and just read the materials printed inside the shoe. Many designers like Stella McCartney and Steve Madden have leather free products....Then there is MOO shoes in the Village, which is overpriced, IMO, but they sell the hemp products that are truly vegan and not made from stinky man-made materials.

Happy to help rij73, if you need any other info just let me know.
A fantastic message board geared specifically to New York with great member photographs is http://www.wirednewyork.com
Check it out~

Also, just want to correct the info from my last post, I said that Fairway is open until 1:00 am....however, the upstairs Natural foods department closes at 10pm....same with Whole Foods, 10pm. Westerly is open till midnight, though...can you tell I am a night owl, or what?

NY update - I never got to go to PB & Co.
It was kind of a rainy day on Saturday, so we just visited a bookstore and went to see a movie.

I was thinking of ordering some of their natural pb though - does anyone know which is best or has tried this before?

Tomorrow, Saturday 6/19, Earth Save is having a festival called "Taste of Health" at Lincoln Center (W. 65th & Columbus). The website is www.tasteofhealth.org There'll be vegan food, speakers, music, vendors, cooking demos, etc. I didn't go to it last year, but I heard it's really good.

I've never tried theirs, but Smuckers makes a darn good natural PB, as does this brand called "Yum", which is only $2.99 per jar. I found that in C-Town.
