View Full Version : New York
That sounds awesome, jwnyc! Maybe we'll go this weekend. RichBeBe and I are right next door in Forest Hills.
On a serious note in NYC, that was so scary what happened today.

:hi: What happened?
There was a shooting at City Hall in Manhattan.

Yeah, very freaky. Poor guy. Y'know, a person tries to do something good in this world, and there's always someone else to take it away.
NY1.com was jammed for a couple hours. I think everyone counts on them for first-hand-up-to-date news and millions went there at one time.
I started riding my bike to work just in case something crazy goes down and I have to get the heck out of Manhattan in a hurry. Anything can happen...

Hello Fellow NYers :)
I live in Westchester. A fine example of suburbia!! Great veg*n chinese place in Port Chester tho if anyone is in the area, Green Symphony... its right off I95.. mmm...
Hi, rabid_child! I am originally from Westchester and now live in Queens. An interesting example of suburbia, that's for sure. Pros and cons about growing up there. I could go on...
Never ate at Green Symphony but that's really great to keep in mind. Thanks!
And is that a deer in your avatar?!?!
I just wrote a letter to Smart Dogs to suggest they open up a Tofu Dog stand on Coney Island. I was just out there a couple times and wished to god I could have a tofu dog with saurkraut and mustard!
Hopefully they'll do it. They'd make a fortune and make lots of vegetarians reeeeel happy!

Yes is it :D
It 'belongs' to a boy i'm quite smitten with. The whole tale of the deer is in my intro post on the intro board. He's a very nice deer tho. I have a zillion pics of him from when I just visited. That one I was being smooched. You can't really tell in my avatar -- but he's trying to lick my forehead!!
Wow, that is the coolest story. I just read it. (And that's a really cute guy!!!)
Have you ever been hiking at Ward Pound Ridge? There are deer there that have become trusting of some of the people that live within the reservation and they walk right up to the house and eat. I saw it one day while camping there. It was incredible.

I'm from Upstate N.Y. - originally from Pulaski (how's that for small), now I live near Rome. I still have to tell people I'm from Syracuse because most people haven't heard of Utica or Rome.
Look what I stumbled upon!

WOOHOO!! Got lights back!! I hope the rest of you will be back in business soon :)
That Blackout was a blast. I had a great time. Luckily I rode my bike to work that day, so it only took me an hour to get home in all the foot traffic.
We had a smashing Blackout party. I thought it was great being able to walk around my neighborhood in the dark! Watched the sun set over Manhattan and thought it was a once in a lifetime chance to see no lights come on.
As soon as we all knew it wasn't a terrorist attack, and that people werent' dying and the hospitals were okay, it was a real good time.

Does anyone know if a vegan baking class exists anywhere in NYC?

*raises hand* I know where Rome and Utica are. :vebo: I've been a CNYer all my life. (Of course, when I tell people from out-of-state that I'm from New York, they assume I mean NYC.)

Try these places:

I know that Natural Gormet School has a wheat-free vegan baking class from time to time. Let me know if you take one and like it because I'd be very interested in going!

WooHoo!! They're building a Whole Foods store in White Plains!! I'm so excited!! I just drove by the other day. I forget when it opens though...
Not exactly around the corner from me, but I'll take a drive for some good veggie food :)
we're taking a trip to nyc in december to visit relatives. i figured here would be a good place to ask if anyone knows of any good veg*n (preferably vegan) restaurants near rockefeller center or the met museum. also, any good restaurants in chinatown or little italy would be appreciated.

RichBeBe and I are well-versed in the awesome-ness of veg*an Chinatown restaurants! A few musts:
Vegetarian Dim Sum House on Pell
You gotta have: fried turip cake (Dim Sum menu), Veggie Chop Peking Style (from the regular menu), vegetarian duck appetizer (from the regular menu). If you're not vegan, the mock shrimp with mayo and walnuts is great, too.
Vegetarian Paradise 3 on Mott
Sweet and Sour anything is awesome, as is the steamed "chicken." Oh, and they have Shanghai Juicy Buns (it's like soup in a dumpling) that are great but order them first thing because they take extra time to prepare. We also often get the fried wontons as a snack. They're different that you would expect. They have more of a Chinese Five Spice taste.
Doyers Vietnam on Doyers
If you like the contrasts of sweet and sour and salty, you will love this! I am in love with the salty lime drink. Rich hates it! It's like the strongest gatorade you ever had. So good. They have a vegetarian section of their menu. The vegetarian sour soup Vietnamese style is incredible. We also love the Vegetable spring roll with thin rice noodles plate. You roll up a spring roll inside a lettuce leaf with mint leaves and other stuff and dip it in a sauce. Wow. Any of the "cool" rolls such as Buddhist or Imperial are great too. I love mint.
I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on touristy Italian restaurants. If you have your heart set on Italian, I'll get you a recommendation from my brother who lives in Chinatown.
Rich and I just went to Moby's restaurant Teany for the first time a few days ago. It's on Rivington. We had a vegan tea for two ($25)! It was so great! You get to choose 4 different vegan tea sandwiches, 2 different vegan sweets (scones, muffins, etc.) and vegan petite fours with 2 pots of tea (like Earl Grey? MUST get the Earl Grey Creme!!!). The baked goods are incredible. They have a private vegan baker who does all their stuff. It blows away any vegan baked goods we've ever had in NYC. And we were stuffed. $25 was a deal. And really nice waiters. Perfect for lunch, tons of vegan stuff.
Other places I can vouch for: Veg-City Diner (it's like junk food done right!), Vatan (prix fixe Indian. Just tell them you don't want dairy or egg and they're very good about it.), Kyber Pass (Afghanni - heavy on the dairy, though. Must have the soup w/out meat and the fried pumpkin appetizer.), Angelica Kitchen (Famous, but we found nothing to really rave about.), Kate's Joint (not very impressed but a lot of brunch options), and Zen Palate (the old stand-by! Consistently great. Only a few things are not vegan and they'll tell you which ones.). I know there are more I'm not thinking of. If I think of them I'll post them.
Have fun on your trip! And if you venture over to Queens, let us know and we'll recommend veggie places in our neck of the woods!
wow. thank you so much for all of the information. we will definitely end up eating in chinatown. asian food appeals to me more than italian anyway. i really wanted to give teany a try but i don't know if we'll make it to the lower east side because it's a family trip. we're going to have a hard enough time dragging the fam to vegan restaurants, let alone all over the city. i think i still have some research to do, but you've been a big help. thanks again.

Okay, is it too early to start coordinating a Christmas holiday visit from a couple of Los Angeles vegans (me and my wife) to the fair town of Manhattan?
We'll actually be staying in Long Island and visiting family in Brooklyn, but expect to spend significant time in the city sampling restaurants and dropping some cash at MooShoes, so it would be great to meet as many of you as we can, even if it's on separate occasions in different locations.
By all means, PM me if you want to try and coordinate a visit.
Jenni: You are so welcome. My pleasure! Enjoy your trip and be sure to tell me what restaurants you go to!
Epski: I'm not sure if we're going away around Christmas time. We're still unsure. But I'll PM you if it looks like we'll be around! What dates will you be here?
