Yes, Sprout, the naked cowboy is still around Times Square. So is the guy who empties trashcans over his own head.
I can't wait to be a former New Yorker.

Well Field Day was moved to Giants Stadium and everyone who had bought the Calverton tickets got screwed, and from what I hear the one with Tom Petty may be canceled.

Yes, Rich just reminded me of that. For environmental reasons, no?

It was a whole big thing, the environmental stuff was just part of it. The health department would not give them a mass gathering permit and basically a lot of local politicians didn't want it to happen. Not enough police...blah blah, too much traffic. It was a mess. I was very let down.

My wife has to go to New York for a few days for a funeral, and we haven't been there since becoming vegan, so I was hoping some of you could recommend places in or near Long Island and Brooklyn. Manhattan is helpful, too, but is not quite as convenient.

Thanks!!!!!!

Manhattan:
--Quantum Leap. West 3rd St between Thompson and Sullivan. Good, basic vegan and vegetarian food. Their soups are yummy; their Mexican and Asian-inspired dishes are quite good as well.
--Burritoville. Vegan-friendly Mexican food (ask for tofu sour cream and soy cheese). Various locations. Off the top of my head, 2nd Ave between St Marks Place and East 9th St; Bleecker St at 7th Ave; Chambers St between Hudson and Greenwich.
--Zen Palate. Union Square East at East 16th St. Vegan-friendly Asian-inspired dishes. Also has a location on 9th Ave in the forties.
--Gandhi. Vegetarian and vegan Indian food. East 6th St between 1st and 2nd Ave.
--Dojo. Has good stir fried veggies with soba noodles, hijiki tofu burgers, and salads with very good carrot dressing. Saint Marks Place between 2nd and 3rd Ave; also 3rd St near Washington Square.

Brooklyn:
--The Greens. Vegan Chinese food. Very good. Montague Street, corner of Henry St, Brooklyn Heights.
--Sahadi's. Not a restaurant, but a store that carries all manner of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean specialties. Bulk nuts and spices, great hummus and baba ganoush, and their veggie stuffed grape leaves are fabulous (stuffed with rice, chickpeas, and tomatoes). They do a big carry-out business. Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Court St.

Thank you. I'll forward this info on to her. It looks like Manhattan won't be quite as convenient, but the Brooklyn stuff will come in handy. I think we already saw The Greens at Happy Cow, but I'll send that on to be sure.

RichBeBe and I have been to Veggie Castle in Brooklyn. If you're looking for something inexpensive and low-key, it's great! It used to be a White Castle and they turned it into Veggie Castle. Gotta love that. It's at 2242 Church Avenue between Flatbush and Bedford Ave. Phone # is 718-703-1275. Tons of choices, great Carribean food, extensive juice bar. There are tons of other veggie places in Brooklyn but we haven't been to a lot of them.

There's a Zen Palate in Long Island at 477 Old Country Road. Phone # 516-333-8686. It's wonderful, as are any of the Zen Palates. The staff is very knowledgable and will inform you about what is and what is not vegan if you ask.

We just ate at Zen Pavillion this weekend and it was excellent. So calming and healthy. The food is very subltle and more traditional Chinese style. It's at 251-15 Northern Blvd in Little Neck. Phone # 718-281-1500.

Sorry to hear about the funeral. Hope you at least find some comfort in good vegan food. PM me if you need more info.

Cool. We need to eat in Brooklyn more. There are so many places we haven't explored yet.

In terms of favorites, I have so many. In Manhattan, Vegetarian Dim Sum House, VP3, Veg City Diner, Vatan, and tons of others. In Queens (where we live), Buddha Bodai, Oneness Fountain Heart, Annam Brahma, and a bunch of other places that aren't soley vegetarian. And I had some amazing soy soft-serve the other day at Linda's Natural Kitchen in Kew Gardens.

I'll have to check out The Greens in Brooklyn. What do you recommend there?

How IS it possible that you haven't met any fellow veggie NY'ers?!?! Here we are! Here we are! ;)

i had a seitan "beef" dish, forgot what it was called. thanks for posting all the places you did too. park slope has many veggie friendly places now on 7th ave, some on 8th. red hot szechuan is a well know one (they have two, across from one another, and one is more veg, maybe all veg). i live near brighton and there is no place for me. this is little odessa and i have only found salad to eat in a russian place;(
we used to have falafel restaurants, and i wish we still did. the closes i can get to a veg meal here is ordering bean curd and broccoli, chinese takeout!
oh well, at least nathan's (not too far) still sells fries, and in the summer i think, corn on the cob!

Argh, how frustrating! We rely on Chinese take-out sometimes too. (General Tso's Tofu - it's awesome - and it's vegan!) And resorted to eating Nathan's fries the other day when we were out shopping on LI! (They tasted like fish. Blech!!) Mostly, I cook at home. And, to be honest and throw my humility out the window, it's better than most things we eat in restaurants anyway. But cooking is my passion, my hobby, and my joy so I tend to put a lot of time and effort into it.

Should I send some veggie food over to Brooklyn?!?!?

heyyy cool, syracuse people, verbivore and scottishthistle! im actually from baldwinsville, but i say syracuse because no one has usually ever heard of my nice little town. and when anyone ever says "new york" everyone automatically thinks of the city. too bad there aren't really any vegetarian/vegan restaurants around here.

I know where B'ville is! My grandmother lives there, and my mother went to Baker High School. Yeah, there aren't many veg-friendly restaurants. The Indian place on Salina St. is really good, if you like ethnic food.

A lot of places carry Gardenburgers now- I guess a step in the right direction. Applebees carries an awesome vegetarian pizza as an appetizer- I made it my main meal with french onion soup

Hi guys!

I'm a new member here and live in Brooklyn. For you NYC'ers, there is a vegan restaurant on 6th Ave between Waverly/8th Street called Gobo. I've been there a few times and the food is pretty good. But, what really is fantastic there is the vegan chocolate cake that has layers of tofu mousse! For you chocoholics, this cake is for you!

Just wanted to share!

Astoria ROCKS for Greek food, if any of you NY'ers get a craving for a kick ass salad with stuffed grape leaves and the best hummous you ever had, come out to Aliada. Broadway and 30th st.
