I'm sorry I couldn't make it.

An omni friend of mine and I went to the Zen Palate in the theater district last year after we saw "Movin' Out", the set of dances Twyla Tharp choreographed to a number of Billy Joel's songs. My friend isn't veg, but she liked Zen Palate, and so did I.

Back in L.A. now. Don't know if you read all my NY vegan travel and dining posts at An Animal-Friendly Life (http://ananimalfriendlylife.com), but it was a tasty trip, and I have some jealousy-inducing photos there, too.

I surprised myself with some cool vegan-friendly finds at the Lake of the Ozarks this past week, too.

Dimple on 31st Street (between Fifth and Broadway) is a great place to get Indian snack foods and veg-friendly. One of my co-workers introduced me to it, and I've been obsessed with it ever since, especially with their bhel puri. It's got onions, crispy rice puffs, cilantro and jalapeno... Could really go for some right now...

I know I could do a Google search, but I was wondering if any of you could recommend some interesting and worthwhile vegan eateries or particular dishes (in non-vegan eateries) in New York City. A personal recomendation is much more useful than a mile-long google list.

My wife (also a vegan) is going to be there in a few days, and I know she'd like to try some local flavor out, and I'd really like to provide her with some local wisdom on special finds.

I know she *loves* "American" food, like donuts, and sandwiches, and I know she'd love baked goods, which are hard to find here. She doesn't have much time, as she's going to be at a conference, but if the eatery is near Washington Square park neighborhood, she's more likely to visit.

Suggestions?

I live on Long Island, NY. I love it. Any other Islanders here?

I'm moving to New York early 2007, from Sydney Australia, as a result of my dad's job transfer. I'm kind of scared about moving; New York has always fascinated me and I have always dreamt of living there for a few years, but as an adult! Now that this has become a reality, as a sixteen year old teenager I'm kind of scared.

LOL! that is where I take the LIRR to when I come home for a weekend from college. My friend from Vermont thinks it sounds like a disease.

Not long ago I lived in Shirley. That is where I had my 2000 sq foot vegan garden.

Does anyone know any good HFS' or any other place that has a wide variety of faux-meat and veg-friendly meals in New York City? I want to buy them so I can prepare alternatives for when I go back home and eat with my family. I'm from S. Brooklyn....but willing to go to Manhattan/Brooklyn.

Has anyone tried the Himalayan Yak in Queens? I'm going to try it in a few weeks when I visit the area and am wondering what people think...

well, I don't think it's necessary for you to be scared, since NY is a place for people come and go. I mean you are not the only one so you won't be alone! However, I hope you keep in mind for that you should be more like a localman istead of a freshman, because most of New Yorkers are sophisticated. I guess studying maps, making friends and protecting yourself will be enough for you to do when you come to the city.

anyway, good luck!

I'm also moving to Manhattan next year for school. I spent a summer there studying dance and fell in love with it, but any general tips on moving/living there?

What area? What school are you going to? (Only if you feel comfortable saying so, of course)

I'm not sure which school I'll be attending yet, as I applied to three in NYC, but right now it looks like it'll be Marymount Manhattan on the upper east side.

I've applied to Fordham too! I stayed near Lincoln Center for part of last summer so I'm a little more familiar with it. Marymount used to be a Catholic instituition but now has no religious affiliation. I've never been to Candle Cafe but I've heard awesome things about it. Good to hear it's on the upper east side!

Yea, Candle has two places upper east. They need to put one on the west side. Like, at Columbus Circle or something. Did you get in to Fordham? Where else did you apply? I applied to NYU. didn't get in. No where else in NYC.

I haven't heard back from Fordham yet, but I hopefully will soon. I'm applying for the Ailey/Fordham BFA dance program so I also have to audition for the alvin ailey school. In addition to MMC, Fordham and Ailey I'm auditioning for Juilliard as my "reach" school! I'm so excited for next year, wherever I end up!
