Anyhow, we are going there in February.

How far of a drive would you say it is from Vegas to:

Hoover Dam
Grand Canyon
Death Valley

We'd like to see all three and I'm planning a road trip for one of the days we are there. I can't find any good info on the distance. Also, is it warm enough to drive with the top down if we rent a convertible? Any info you can give would be fantabulous! :D

Never mind. I just discovered that it's too far to drive to the Canyon and Death Valley. We may take one of those plane tours to the canyon instead of driving the 5+ hours to get there.

Hoover Dam is under an hour's drive from the middle of Las Vegas, I think. I can't say for sure, because from where I live in Nevada (*ahem* Boulder City, the dam town!) it's hardly a twenty minute drive to the dam.

It should definitely be warm enough to drive with the top down. It usually stays around 40-60 degrees in the winter on the worst days, lately we've been in the upper 60's lower 70s.

Vegas can be nice if you stay in the right areas (i.e. If you want the ghetto, go to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard- I used to live there, so I know it's pretty bad. It's gotten worse in the years since I've left...), and even a life-long desert dweller like myself has to admit that some of the casinos are really spectacular. If you go to the Bellagio, check out their indoor garden. They decorate it really well for every holiday, and I believe the Chinese new year is in february? (I could be wrong!) If so, they do an amazing job decorating it then, I went this year at that time and it was gorgeous! Plus they have a nice watershower every half hour or so.

Also, if you get a chance, come say hi in Boulder City! We have some quaint restaurants (with veg*n options!) as well as a resident veggie or two. ;)

nau -i've spent a lot of time in boulder city, it's not a bad place....but i hate the dam!

The dam is a bit of annoyance, but it supplies some much needed jobs, so I can't be against it too much. I haven't been to it in a few years (aside from the lake, where there's a little hidden branch of the lake you can follow and see the dam from the bottom, which is actually kind of impressive), so I don't know how horrible traffic has gotten. I've heard it's really bad, though.

I think I've been to Flagstaff- at least, I think I have. I know I've been to Arizona a few times to visit family (not recently, though), I just don't remember the exact town...That may have been it, though, it sounds really familiar!

ohhh. can i please advise against the plane tour? those things are so obstrusive to the natural beauty and so environmentally unfriendly - creating noise pollution, etc.

the drive is pretty. plus, if you do the drive, you can stop in flagstaff AZ and it's definitely worth it. :) veggie places to eat and everything!

how long will you be in vegas? you should see a mystere show. definitely worth the money.

Thanks. I hadn't really thought of that end of it (small plane ruinning the scene and all). I never fly places like that in small planes. I'd love to see the canyon, but I don't want to do the 5 hour drive. We're only there for 4 nights/5 days. Is there any desert stuff we can see that is closer? I'm talking like no more than an hours drive. A ghost town would be cool. I've always wanted to photograph desert flowers and rock formations too. I don't want to spend the whole time doing the casino thing. I want to visit nature! :) Suggestions?

I've been to both the Valley of Fire and Redrock, they're really amazing. Valley of Fire has all sorts of indian paintings (I can't remember the correct term right now, sorry) to see, and it's got some really nice hiking/climbing, as does redrock (sans the paintings but with very red stones), check them out if you can. There's also Mt. Charleston, but I think that's an hour's drive and I don't know if you want to come out to the desert to see snow (though it'll most likely be melted by the time you're coming out).

Oh yeah, I don't even swim in Lake Mead anymore. I've seen dead fish floating around, people urinating in there (it's like a constant flow, too! So gross! Drunken partiers going out on their boats, drinking too much and relieving themselves off the side of their house boats, blech.), I've even see a few peices of human fecal matter floating around. My dad goes fairly often (windsurfing and sailing), but I can't stand it. If I'm going to be exposed to excretion in my water, I want it to be fish poopies in the OCEAN, at least it's much more diluted. ;)

Anyhow, I hope you have fun when you come out here, and if you get a chance, come say hi! It'd be awesome to meet a fellow VBer. :) We could go out to lunch or something, maybe.

oh yeah, i forgot about mt charleston, ut i guess that's a bit of a drive. petroglyphs! right? at valley of fire...i gotta go back there, i got to do some hiking last time but not enough! its never enough! i'm hoping to go climbing at red rocks in march, if not climbing definitely lots of hiking.

I've probably been to Lake Mohave with my dad on one of his Yacht club regattas (he sails a 16 foot hobie cat yacht- two hulls, etc). I don't remember specifically, though...Is it the one with all the willow-esque trees? I know I lost a barbie gelly shoe in the mud at a lake with those trees, but I don't know if that was Mohave, Havasu, Big Bear or some other lake.

My dad is the same way about water! If I say anything, he rolls his eyes and says that it'll make me stronger by being exposed to the bacteria. But didn't some kids in florida die because of the bacteria (technically, it was amoebas, but it's a microorganism!) in the water? Bah!

If you don't mind my asking, where do you live, Funk? It sounds like you've been to Nevada a few times, it made me wonder. You've probably done more here than I have, and I've been here for over 10 years!

Sorry, I'm from way down in Southern Nevada. Boulder City, for what it matters. Isn't Reno 4-8 hours away from here? That's farther than Arizona or California! Egads. :stinkeye:

Nope sorry, im from Moapa Valley, if you know where that is, its kinda by lake mead and valley of fire though.
I love visiting valley of fire, its really nice and the petroglyphs are awsome, i even found an arrowhead, but i dont think that was at valley of fire, but by a place near me. anywhere out there is a nice place to go though, as long as its not all too close to vegas.
has anyone seen the wild horses in between vegas and parump? i have they are simply gorgeous! and huge!

Its a dry heat though,not like in the south where your clothes stick to ya!

A quick reply to some of the Vegas questions (I live here)... it's summer and it's hot. Over 100, last week we had days that were around 105-108 degrees. It's like hell, dress lightly, wear sunscreen, sunglasses and drink lots of water to keep from dehydrating.

Vegetarian restaurants in Las Vegas... Vegas is not very veggie friendly, but there are some places you can get a good vegetarian meal. You just have to know where to find them. Here are tips on where to go for a good vegetarian meal on and off the strip.

On the strip -
Cheesecake Factory inside the Caesar's Forum Shops
California Pizza Kitchen inside the Mirage and the Fashion Show Mall
P.F. Chang's inside the Aladdin
Harley Davidson Cafe on the strip

Off the strip-
Capriotti's Sandwhich Shop near the Sahara Hotel
Rainbow's End Vegetarian Restaurant - about a mile from the Sahara

And what I think is the best place to get vegetarian food in Las Vegas - the Mediterranean Cafe, you can get info on them at their website at www.paymons.com . They have great hummus, falafel, grape leaves...yum!

At Komol, its on Sahara, its a Thai/Vegetarian place and its kind of hard to find, but when you do find it, it is very much worth going to, they have 2 menus, omni and veggi. My favorite dish is the Orange Tofu *yum yum* and they have coconut milk :lick: about the only downside to it is that the restraunt next door has a big sign saying "Mexican Goat Dish" wich kind of defeats the purpose... but still, you definately must try it!
