A vegan is someone who avoids all animal products. They can eat grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables...anything non-animal.
A fruitarian eats nothing that has to be killed, including plants. So a fruitarian could eat an apple (because that doesn't kill the apple tree) but not a cabbage (which dies a grisly cabbage death for our suppers).
I have found vegan meals to be more varied then most omni meals I see. You'll find alot of vegans to absolutly love food. There are many many combinations of platters that can be made from all the differnet kinds of fruits, veggies, and grains out there.

Gosh I hope not!
Medesha said it best, I just wanted to add that.
Plus I wanted a chance to use the eek face.

Question about the fruitarian:
Isn't the fruitarian aware that eating an apple kills all the baby apple trees (seeds) in that apple? Unless you swallow the seeds whole and poop outside. :) Whereas a cabbage can be harvested in such a way that the cabbage plant survives and can live more than a year (some can live indefinitely)?

Possibly. I could be getting fruitarianism wrong, as I'm not one myself, but I think that's the gist of it. (They could always plant the apple seeds too, couldn't they? You don't have to eat them.)
Right, they could just cut around the core, and plant the seeds. :)
Carrot lives also can be saved by just cutting off the bottom of the carrot and replanting the top. Supposedly a woman ate the same carrots for five years using this strategy.
Potato lives can be saved by thickly peeling the potato and planting the skins.
This sort of thing might get ridiculous after awhile, though....:juggle:
AFAIK The point of fruitarianism is only taking that which is freely given as food. Where nothing has to die, including plant life. Fruits are made by the plant for the sole purpose of spreading its seeds. So apples, cucumbers, tomatoes are all ok. While carrots, lettuce, celery are not.
I do wonder if the seeds themselves are ok. Like wheat and other grains? If so it wouldn't be as hard as I think it is.
But if you digest the seeds, you kill them...
It doesn't make much sense to me. If you eat a leaf off a plant it doesn't kill the plant, but if you eat a fruit, you're potentially killing dozens or even hundreds of living baby plants (all fertile seeds are alive).
Many plants are adapted to being partially eaten (grasses evolved with grazers). Many lettuces and other greens fall into this category of a plant which can continue to grow after having several or even most of its leaves removed.

I've yet to see a fruitarian diet that is healthy and balanced. Plus, you would have to supplement anyway.

No actually. Seeds are designed to be eaten and pass through an animal's digestion unharmed. If seeds were not eaten, carried away from the plant by the animal and then excreted they would never spread very far away from the original plant.
As has been said above, bascially Fruitarians believe in eating anything which doesn't kill the plant. Eating grass, leaves, et al, is fine since it doesn't hurt the plant.

Not only unharmed - some fruits/seeds rely on being eaten so the hulls of the seeds will be etched by gastric acids, making it easier for them to germinate.

okay - that seems weird to me.... puts an uncomfortable spin on it....
*nice happy place nice happy place*
So a true fruitarian should poop outside?

Well, it does get outside somewhere eventually... :flush:

And beans - let us not forget beans :D. I'm discovering the joys of legumedom since moving to veganism. I think I have about 6 different types of beans sitting in my refrigerator right now :lick: .

Fruitarianism is like this:
if the earth had an opinion, it would request us to eat fruit over vegetables. Eating fruits is entriely symbiotic (both sides benefit) and, conceptually speaking, the most respectful diet.
imo.
