Thanks for the welcome!

Mud Pie had several things going for it: A large all veggie menu with many vegan items, great variety (Mexican, American, Oriental, Indian....) and reasonable prices. It was the one place everyone in the family could agree on!

What are favorite restaurants for everyone in Minneapolis/St. Paul?

My family's current favorites:
Udupi, Pataya, Viva Mexico, Lien Son.
Udupi is South Indian, all veggie with a few vegan items, very tasty esp. if you like spicy food.
Pataya is Thai, Lien Son is Vietnamiese and Viva is Mexican. All have both meat and meat free dishes, so they are good when you are out in mixed company.

I used to manage the front end of Mud Pie - I miss it, too! There are a lot of awesome vegetarian friendly restaurants in this city, but that one was a relic. As for guac and chips, etc. I can't say I have found a place that comes close - although I hear that Bar Abeline has good guac and chips - they make it at the table side apparently.

One of my favorite places if Evergreen Chinese on 24th and Nicollet - it's in a basement so you may have to scout on your first visit. The most veg-friendly chinese place in the metro area - by a landslide. There's also an Ethiopian place I love on the west bank, Kilamanjaro. Check out the veg guide (google it, I can't type links yet) for over 200 listings for places vegans like to eat in the twin cities, thousands of entries world wide.

Hope this helps!

Singapore Chinese in Maplewood! I think the main waitress there is also the owner since she's always, always there. Upon finding out that I was vegetarian (at the end of a meal) she got really happy and told me that if she had known earlier, she would have made sure that I got their vegetarian eggrolls.
They make their own tofu, and it is much better than most places in St. Paul.

I've also been assured that most of the dishes can be prepared vegetarian.

Many of the curry dishes will make you do the happy food dance.

Oh! Also, The Swede Hollow Cafe. It's the place where I go for comfort food. They always make sure that at least one of the soups are veg*n every day and it's never the same soup two days in a row.

After moving to Tennessee, I so miss the Ecopolitain. Ymmmm!

I hope its still around. When I head back to MN this winter, I'm going to try to stop by.

Can anyone in Minnesota recommend a place to buy cruelty-free clothing? I'm in need of a new belt and probably some shoes and hate clothes shopping online.

Hi b4s,
You can join plenty of veg. groups around town. Check out Compassionate Action for Animals. I have a few friends involved in that organization. Also check out the myspace.com group I've posted in the past in this thread.
You're going to love eating your way around here!

I have not heard of either of these! I'm going to have to look them up. Where is Swede Hollow Cafe?

The Swede Hollow Cafe is on 7th Street, east of downtown St. Paul. Just past Metropolitan University, but before you get to Arcade. I can't think of the cross street at the moment.

Hey guys, if you're not doing anything this evening, come out for EarthSave's potluck. We're watching a video titled "Eating", and of course devouring great vegan food. But the best thing about it is that I will be there, along with my girlfriend, too. :):p

Guess what guys! Great news! A gentleman at EarthSave last night announced that he will be opening a vegan boutique in St. Paul in the near future. Visit www.fastandfurless.com or email fastandfurless@yahoo.com for more information. I might be there for the grand opening possibly doing makeup demos. I'll keep you posted.

Hey neat!

It looks like the boutique is opening the day after thanksgiving, which is usually the day that I try to hide and not set foot near shopping centers, but this looks interesting.

From the way he described the store to me, the shop is in a home similar to some of the shops on Grand Avenue. So you can still avoid shopping centers that day :p. I think it will be a great way to spend Fur Free Friday!

Plus, it falls on the week of my birthday! I'll email the guy for the address and mark it on my calendar.

Hi people,

Help, I have been sent to Minneapolis twice this month for work and I live off of roomservice french fries. When I am there I work with Target downtown. Where are good places for a vegan to eat either Downtown near the Airport or the Mall of America. Also where are some good places that I can go with my fancy schmancy Meat addicted soy allergic collegues. Anybody been to cafe lur cat (SP?)? What about a tapas place called so-something.

Thanks,
Cosmo

Solara is the name of the tapas place. I haven't been there so I'm not sure how veg-friendly it is.

Cosmos (how ironic!) has a vegan pasta dish all the time, and that's downtown. Again, I haven't been there but I've heard that it's quite swanky (and expensive).

Things to try within minutes of downtown, but not quite downtown:
Tum Rump Thai is my favorite on Lake Street. :lick:
Nicollet Ave is called "Eat Street". You will find great veg. food at New Dehli, which is close to downtown. Other great dining places on Nicollet are further away, but worth checking out.

I highly suggest heading to Galactic Pizza while you're here. Also, Triple Rock Social Club is a must! Those are for evening dining though, not for lunch.

Downtown also boasts a Jamba Juice and a Chipotle. Other chain places in the area include Noodles and Co.

Perhaps we could dine together while you're here? :D

ETA: My personal favorite place to grab a meal or snack is French Meadow Bakery on Lyndale. Their vegan pancakes are awesome and their other vegan treats like bars, muffins, scones, etc go great with their Peace Coffee. They also have non-breakfast food. Ask what they have for a vegan and they'll be happy to help. At night it turns to table service, rather than counter like it is during the day.

Here's where to look for more places to eat. http://www.vegguide.org/location/view.html?location_id=13&new_query=1

I almost forgot Pizza Luce and Sapor in the warehouse district.

Thanks so much, Sally. I will definitely try to find some time in one of my future trips to meet up with you for a meal. How late is too late for you? I tend to fly in at 8:35 and I am always ravenous. I will suggest Cosmos to the girls next time too.

I second French Meadow Bakery! It's absolutely wonderous.

I also second Tum Rup Thai! Try the green curry. SO GOOD.

If you're into pseudo Asian food, you could try Kindoh (am I spelling that right?) right on 28th and Hennipen in Uptown. I love their mock-duck lo mein.

Sawatdee Vegetarian and Seafood is Thai food in Uptown, but beware: none of their soups are vegetarian. For a restaurant that says 'Vegetarian' right in the title, you'd think that they could make at least ONE of their soups veg*n.

As you might be able to tell, I tend to spend more time eating uptown than downtown. It probably has something to do with the fact that I live uptown (and walking to food is easier than driving or bussing to food). When downtown I usually stick to Pizza Luce or Koyi Sushi (they have a great vegetarian roll called "Forever Young", and I love their spinach salad. But again, watch out! The Miso soup isn't veg*n. It's a shame.)

Went to Izzy's Ice Cream today with my son after a trip to the Bell Museum. He had raspberry soy and I had blueberry soy. I love their soy ice creams!
