Hi everyone
I've been on VB's for a few years now, off and on. Been a vegetarian for about 8 years now. I'm moving to Minneapolis in the fall to attend a graduate program at the U of M. Is Minneapolis vegetarian-friendly? Where are the good natural/organic grocery stores???
let me know any other tips! thanks!
b4s
Greetings!
I'd say Minneapolis/St. Paul gets a B on vegetarian friendliness. Near the U, you'll find lots of restaurants with veggie foods. For a grocery store, I usually go once a month to Whole Foods (one in Mpls and one in St. Paul) for veggie specialties, but for quick trips for basics, Rainbow, Cub, and SuperTarget actually are pretty decent, and Byerly's/Lund's has even more of the speciality stuff I want, although it's pricey. There are co-ops near the U too, and although I've never been to them, I'm sure someone here has.
:hi:
I think that the more I explore Minneapolis, the more I think it gets an A for veg*n friendlyness. We have lots and lots of co-ops (I also don't know where the co-ops are near the U) and plenty of places to eat.
Triple Rock isn't too far from the U and they have good vegan bar food. Tara33 recommended that to me. Go to www.triplerocksocialclub.com

Looks like a cool place. I'll be sure to check it out when I get there. Can't wait to meet other veggie's at the U of M. I'll try to join the student organization too, I'm on their mailing list.

Pft. I lived in Dinkytown up until.. oh.. about 5 days ago. I've moved to Uptown.
Yes, join Compassionate Action for Animals. I've been apart of the group for two years, now- although I admittedly haven't helped out for a couple of months. I used to be a much more active member. It's a great group, and it's leaders are very dedicated to veganism, vegetarianism, and getting the word out about it's issues. They're always looking for help tabling at Coffman- always. They also do a lot of stuff with leafleting (usually "Why Vegan" and "Why Vegetarian") both around campus and at local events (political, concerts, etc.). Quite involved with campus vegan/vegetarian issues like getting more veg-friendly foods in the dining halls, vegan food give-a-aways, vegan pot-lucks... they often get speakers to come to the U. Great on campus group.
I always did my grocery shopping at North Country Co-op located on the Westbank of the U of M campus. It's a tad overpriced, but it's wonderful- and if you become a member you can get a great discount. It has everything you need, it's small, and their selection of organic produce is fabulous. I love that co-op.
Oh, and SallyK- I've joined your group.
Stellar26, awesome! Hope you can join us for our next meet up!
I was at the AIDS Walk yesterday and I was excited because there was Vruit juice and Newman's "O"s for the walkers in the Power Walker's tent. Was anyone else there?

Any vegans or vegetarians in the Twin Cities area want to join our veg running group? We meet at Lake Harriet on Thursdays at 6:30pm and Saturday mornings at 9:30am. You don't have to be hard core - we're casual about these runs, but if you are hard core, that's awesome, too!

there are over 200 veg friendly restaraunts and grocers listed on the VegGuide for the twin cities - i don't think I can post a link, but it's an "org" site. Check it out! The ratings are all listed and many of them have reviews from people like you and me saying what their favorite dish is, etc. You can even search by zip code of neighborhood to find a place near where you'll be living!

Silverundertone,
I use a/c, but that's because I can't open the windows because of my husband's allergies. I personally hate a/c -- it smells like metal to me. Is that weird?

Has anybody been to Intelligent Nutrients? I keep hearing about it and was kind of interested in checking out their restaurant-type thing. Deli? Salad bar? I'm not sure what they have, but it's food. But while I take a multivitamin, I'm not at all into lots of supplements and natural medicines and whatnot and don't want to be pressured into buying anything like that or eating food with any additives. Any info?
The old vegetarian meetup group (now on Myspace.com) is recruiting new members and we're dining out on Wednesday (June 15). We'll be at Galactic Pizza at 7 pm. You can PM me to RSVP or for more information. Mmmm, beer and veg*n pizza!

just stopping to say hi!
do you all know about sister's camelot? they pick up organic food from wharehouses where it is about to expire in a big bus and then bring it to public housing developments and others in need for a free store like situation. it's inspiring!
great people, dedicated to the cause.
you can get some groceries yourself if you would like to volunteer!
peas out!
Mclibel is showing at the Bell theater in Minneapolis through June 23. www.mclibelthemovie.com
hi MNers! I just found this site last week and have been devouring all of its information ever since. I've lived in MN for 8 years, in the Twin Cities for 4, and I love everything about the cities but the winter months (yeah..that's a big part!). I've been ovo-lacto for four years. I'm really happy to have found this site, and hopefully I can meet up with you for dinner sometime.

not weird....i rarely use a/c here...my guess is that it just adds more pollutants to the air...hence the metal smell...

Hi all,
New to this board, I've lived in Minneapolis 25 years, Wisconsin and Iowa before that. My husband and I have been vegetarian for about eighteen years, my kids all their lives.
Anyone here remember the MudPie Restaurant? We cried when it closed! Any idea where to get any of their recipes? They had the BEST salsa, guac and taco shells....
Love, Lou
Hi Lou! I live in Minneapolis too! I've never actually went to the MudPie Restaurant, I was sad when it closed since I had always intended on going.

Me too! I never ate there! It is now a bar called the Bulldog. Oddly enough, our veg*an group usually goes there for a beer or cocktail after our monthly dine-outs.
