Well, if you don't mind greasy food, a dive-like atmosphere, and choking on smoke you could always check out Hard Times Cafe (http://www.phototour.minneapolis.mn.us/973) on the westbank of the U of M campus. They have a fabulous vegan menu ranging from brunch items (like vegan pancakes and tofu scramble) to lunch/dinner items like black bean burritos and a fabulous tempeh reuben sandwich (hold the 1000'd island dressing). They have vegan soups daily, also. I frequent there :) and the food is great- but I do want to stress that it is very much a dive. I think it adds to Hard Time's charm, though.
Oh stellar - I've been to Hard Times! Ages and ages ago. Actually, my husband and I ate there way back when we were just dating. I'm glad it's still around! And I know exactly what you mean by the ... atmosphere!
Thanks for reminding me of it! My husband's a smoker, so any place that still allows him to light up, he's all for.
I just got this in my Inbox...I won't be able to attend

Ahh! I want to go, too! If I don't have to work then I'm there without a doubt.
It's that time again! Our meetup group is having dinner at Udupi Cafe in Columbia Heights at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Hope to see some new faces there!

I am not currently a vegan but, I would like to know more about it and want to understand it. Do you mind if I joined the meet up group tomorrow to learn more about it. I would like to convert over but, I need to be more educated.

I would also like to know about vegan friendly sunday (Easter) brunch spots? Something with a little more general appeal than Hard Times. Seems a lot of the nicer veg friendly places, e.g. Cafe Brenda, aren't open on Sundays...trying to find a spot for my family, which includes one vegan. I did talk to JP's American Bistro on Lyndale and Lake. They are having an Easter Buffet, and said they could definitely accomocate a vegan, would be interested to hear if any vegans have found food happiness there? Thanks!
I have heard that Bryant Lake Bowl http://www.bryantlakebowl.com/pdfs/BLBmenu%20breakfast.pdf has good vegetarian friendly brunches. I ate dinner there last week and it was really good! Lots of vegan options...
What about French Meadow Bakery http://www.frenchmeadowbakery.com/CafeMenu.htm ? Both of these options are pretty casual though.

Ooh - I have got to remember to go this year. Completely spaced about it last year. I've never been before.
(And Sal - who took your avatar photo? It's gorgeous - not that you aren't gorgeous all the time, of course :smitten: but it's an awesome photo.)
Thanks qetta :D A gentleman in Coon Rapids took it - along with 100 other shots. He emailed me that picture and I think I will get the rest on CD in the mail today or tomorrow. I can't wait to see them and show 'em off :p

i grew up in MN (now live in ND) - just thought i would say hi! :)
Hello, everyone. I'm new to the veggie boards and fairly new to Minnesota. I've been vegan for years, I have 3 little dogs, and one husband.
-Tara
Also, I can't figure out how to include my picture. Does anybody know how?
Hi Tara! Welcome to Veggieboards :) I'm so glad you finally found us! Yay, I recruited someone!! :vebo:
Check out this thread with detailed info about posting an avatar. Hope that helps!

Tara, when you get time, can you post more infomation about that bubble tea place and their vegan cheesecake? Thank you!!
Well, my picture is the wrong size, so I'm trying to figure out how to re-size it.
The name of the cheesecake place is Muddy Paws. It's on Hennepin. They always have one kind of vegan cheesecake that you can get by the slice, and you can choose from lots of different flavors if you want to order a whole cheesecake. I'm not allowed to post web-sites yet, but it's "muddypawscheesecake" with the you-know-what before and after.
The tea place is right across the street. It's called Tea Garden, and they have bubble tea and regular tea. The bubble tea can be made vegan w/ soy if you ask. Yum!
-Tara
I've noticed the Tea Garden and always meant to go there.
I may have to may an excursion there soon....
Thanks!
Hi Tara, you can email it to me if you'd like me to resize it for you...I'd be happy to do that for ya.
Thanks for posting that. I was telling someone the other day about Tea Garden and for some reason I got confused and told him that they had vegan cheesecake. Ooops! I'm glad I now have this cleared up!
By the way, our vegetarian meetup group is meeting tomorrow night for dinner at Evergreen (I think? There's been a little confusion about that but I expect it to be cleared up soon). Dinner at 7pm...email me if you think you can make it, or sign up at http://vegetarian.meetup.com/35/events/
I can hardly wait!!
:vebo:
Sally, thanks for re-sizing my picture! Rob and I will be at the meet-up tonight.

Hi everyone
I've been on VB's for a few years now, off and on. Been a vegetarian for about 8 years now. I'm moving to Minneapolis in the fall to attend a graduate program at the U of M. Is Minneapolis vegetarian-friendly? Where are the good natural/organic grocery stores???
let me know any other tips! thanks!
