Yay! Something for me to protest!

Twin Cities make short list for national political conventions
PIONEER PRESS

The Twin Cities are on the short list for both the 2008 Democratic and Republican national conventions, the mayors of the two cities announced today.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak talked up the Twin Cities' prospects this afternoon from the balcony of the new Guthrie Theater overlooking St. Anthony Falls.

Representatives of the Democratic National Committee will make a three-day visit here starting June 26 to review the cities' joint bid, the mayors said.

The two leaders pledged to showcase the cities, their attractions and their amenities.

"As a Democrat or a Republican, if you really look at the next presidential election, you can see that it will be decided on the Mississippi River in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Louisiana," Rybak said. "We haven't had a chance like this in 100 years, and no one will work harder than we will to get one of these conventions."

Coleman agreed, saying, "We will continue to work together to show we are an ideal location for the DNC convention. I'm confident the DNC site visit will show our facilities are second to none and prove that we have a lot of excitement in Minnesota for the chance to host the convention."

The Twin Cities are one of four finalists for the Democratic convention, which could attract more than 17,000 visitors. Other Democratic convention finalists include Denver, New Orleans and New York.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul and New York City are the only metro areas on the short lists for both Democratic and Republican conventions, the mayors said.

The 2008 Democratic National Convention, which would be held Aug. 24-29, drew as many as 11 bids, officials said. The Republican National Convention, to be held Aug. 31 through Sept. 4, drew bids from 30 cities.

Republican officials are expected to announce finalists and locations for visits in coming weeks, although there were indications that the Republican team would tour the Twin Cities beginning Aug 3.

Thumbs up!

I couldn't find any other mention of this store in the threads, so I hope this is useful to somebody.

It's my second trip this week to a newly opened grocery store, and this time I went to the new Fresh & Natural Foods near me in Plymouth. I think there's at least one other one somewhere in the Twin Cities. It's great! It's like Whole Foods in that it's expensive (although the sale prices were very good) but has a lot of specialty stuff (I think just about every product Quorn makes, Earth Balance, Rice Dream, lots of gluten-free), but it's not like Whole Foods in that it's in the suburbs, practically deserted, and doesn't smell like fish! I'll probably be going there from now on instead of Whole Foods for specialty stuff. Yay!

I live really close to a Fresh & Natural Foods, too (far east burbs). There is also one in Shoreview (north burbs). Be sure to try the gluten free vegan personal pizza by Madwoman. They are a local company. The pizza could be a bit lower in fat grams, but it is a really delicious treat!

Hello Minnesotans! I grew up in Wisconsin and Minnesota but I consider Mankato, MN my hometown. I currently live in Colorado and though we don't have any misquitos or humidity, I miss Minnesota. Just thought I would drop a line and say hey and let you know there is someone in Colorado pulling for you all!

Minnesotans:

I need your help to save the crippled geese of Silver Lake, Rochester.

Silver Lake has the world's largest concentration of wintering Canada geese. The city administration has promoted the feeding of the geese as a tourist attraction for decades. Due to hunting outside city limits, fishing at Silver Lake, and open water at the lake year-round, there are large numbers of crippled and wounded geese at the lake. They have been able to survive thanks to the kindness of Rochester residents and visitors.

Beginning April 1, 2007, the city administration is planning to create a 30-foot wide buffer zone around the shoreline using native grasses and plants. They will also ban the feeding of geese, shake eggs, and increase hunting beyond the usual hunting seasons. They are also considering rounding up and sending to slaughter flightless geese during the molting season.

These new policies will be detrimental to all the geese, but particularly to the significant numbers of crippled geese. These crippled geese will suffer greatly and starve to death.

Please CLICK HERE (http://www.about.lovecanadageese.com/silverlake.html) for more information about this issue.

We have just created a petition to try and help save the crippled geese. Please CLICK HERE (http://www.petitiononline.com/geese07/petition.html) to sign it and forward it to all your friends.

Eff that. I couldn't handle a school that size. I go to UW Stout, not Madison. I find it humorous though that Wisconsin residents pay less at the U than Minnesota residents do.. wtf?

Hey everyone, seeing as the "Great Minnesota Get Together" starts tomorrow, I wondering just how many of you attend or plan on attending, and if any of you are against it? I have gone every year since I was born and now I would feel like a hypocrite if i go. :-/

Hi, everyone!

I'm from Virginia, but I'm going on a road trip to Missouri and Minnesota the first week of March to visit friends. I've never been out to the mid-west. One of the friends I'm (hopefully) seeing lives in New Prague, MN. Does anyone live near there? Are there any places I should see in MN when I'm out there?

Thanks!
