lol - when I was in school (ahem) some years back :) that commercial was on ALL the time! (for a car dealership I think)

Anyway, I don't know of any veg. restaurants in the immediate area, but there is a yummy one in Royal Oak - here is their website: http://www.innseasoncafe.com/ Also, there is the Pita Cafe right there in Birmingham which has a few veg. options. In Ferndale, you can try Om cafe (bit pricey) or Jalapeno Pete's (not veg, but vegan options). There's another Ethiopian mostly veg place too, but I can't remember the name (River Nile maybe?) Not really sure if that one is still open - been about a yaer or so.

If you're up for a bit of a drive, you can head south to Ann Arbor to the Sunflower restaurant, Earthen Jar, or Seva's (very very yummy!)

There's a good deli and salad bar (with more than iceberg lettuce!) at the Whole Foods in Rochester Hills (where I was during school). I think there's a WF down in Troy now too?

Very cool to see some MI people here. The other veg. boards I've visited was mostly East or West coasters. Hear hear for the heartland (lol)

Hi, I didn't realize this part of the board even existed until just now. So, hello fellow Michiganders. I live in Ann Arbor and think Zingerman's is the most amazing place for a vegan or vegetarian (especially a vegetarian). Oh, the olive oils they have... and 200 year old balsamics... ohhhhhh....

Jim

PS - Love Jerusalem Garden as well... think Seva's a little overrated, but wonderfully knowledgeable staff. Lotus Thai has amazing food, though you have to be specific about what you can't have.

I just found this thread. Hubby and I live in Ferndale. Some of our favorite places to eat:

Ashoka (Troy) - Most amazing Indian food in the area. It seems to be a well kept secret though, it never gets reviewed or written up for some reason but the place is always packed for lunch. Mostly Indian Americans eating here so you know it's good :). The lunch buffet is incredible, it is different every day. They always have 4 vegetarian entrees, plus 2 rices, and a veg. appetizer plus two veg,. soups. The service is great (best I've ever had at an Indian restaurant). Highly recommended if you love Indian food. Also try Rangoli in Auburn Hills or Udipi in Farm. Hills (Udipi is all vegetarian).

Inn Season (Royal Oak) - Great, upscale-ish vegetarian restaurant. They stopped serving fish a few years back and ar enow pure veg. Most of the dishes are vegan or have vegan options (ie soy cheese). They use only fresh, organic produce. Very nice. Awesome desserts. They have a wonderful brunch on Sunday-- don't miss the muffins. Hubby & I often get carryout-- they have a wonderful huge salad brimming with nuts, seeds, tofu, raw veggies. Super healthy.

Om Cafe (Ferndale) - Mostly vegan, macrobiotic. They do serve fish occasionallly though. I disagree with IamJen, though, Om is not quite as pricey as Inn Season. (Om's specials top out at $10.95 vs. Inn Season's priciest at $15.95). This is not the place to bring non-veg friends. Many of the dishes are of the macrobiotic, steamed vegetable, brown rice, tofu-loaf variety. If you do bring someone who is not into die-hard veg. food, the most accessible thing to order would be the Mexican Plate, which is a big plate of nachos (w/soy cheese or not), vegetables, sauteed tofu, etc. Their sauteed tofu is probably the best I've ever had. Definitely check out the specials: Friday nights they have an amazing "soul food special"-- BBQ seitan, collard greens, candied yams, brown rice and a corn muffin. Yummy.

The Blue Nile (Ferndale) - Ethiopian restaurant with two options: all you can eat Vegetarian or Non-vegetarain. You eat a selection of vegetarian items from a huge platter that you share. Beware if you go there with non-vegetarians: they usually dump the meat on the same plate as the vegetables. Even if you warn them ahead of time to put the meat dishes in separate small dishes, uncareful eaters can drop their meat in your veggie dishes. The food is amazing. It is somewhat expensive but it is all you can eat and perfect for a special occassion. If it were cheaper, we'd probably go 2-3 times a week.

La Shish (various locations) - Best Middle Eastern in town. Tons of veg. options. Their fresh bread is amazing as is their hummus. If you like garlic, make sure to ask them for the garlic sauce. WOW. The Vegetarian Ghallaba, Majadra, falalfel, etc . are all good as are the fresh smoothies.

Mongolian BBQ (various locations) - This is a great place to go if you are going out with non-vegetarians since everyone can make their own stir-fry. Just pile on the tofu and veggies and make sure to tell the griller that you are vegetarian: they will scrape the grill down extra well and use separate tongs to cook your food.

Phew! I hope that helps someone.

PS: IamJen - Jalapeno Pete's in Ferndale has closed.

If anyone wants to do anything in Michigan, like another Meetup, I'll actually show up. It would be cool if other people showed up too, because failed Meetups are depressing.

I miss BD's Mongolian. All the Mongolian bbq places out here suck!

I'll add a couple vegan friendly places to the list. Amici's Pizza in Berkley has several vegan pizzas on their menu. They're also good about leaving the cheese off of any of the other varieties.

Atom's Juice Cafe in Grosse Point is an all vegan (as of when I moved away 2 years ago) sandwich shop and juice bar.

:) Well, I'm a bit isolated up here in AK and often I miss strolling through the downtowns (Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Birmingham,...). I miss going to City Club in Detroit too and camping at Pinery in Ontario.
Up here there aren't too many different places to check out, but luckily what do have is pretty awesome! :)
I don't think I'll be able to afford a visit anytime too soon, but I'd like to go visit Wolf's mom in Sterling Heights soon, maybe to accompany her on her way here.

Ethiopian food. Very vegan friendly. Delicious bread called injadra, that you use to pick up the food and eat w/ your hands in the traditional style. You sit around a knee-high basket and eat. It's an experience. A delcious one. And a $14/person one. :) But worth it. And the spiced tea is beautiful.

http://www.moosestooth.net/# Bear Tooth is the BEST place to see a movie! Beer and pizza while you watch and the flick is only $3! (incidently, they're named after mountains with those names http://naclassics.com/climbs/moosewr/beta.htm)
