I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone know of any vegan food pantries in the Detroit Metro or Ann Arbor areas?
Not sure what you mean by food pantry.
But when I found Whole Foods, it was like finding heaven itself. I spent 2 hours just looking around the first time I walked into that place. Used to drive an hour there and back just for grocerys...
Best. Grocer. Ever.

Smoke free? I would LOVE it to be smoke free evey where I went! No, the laws haven't passed here in good old Michigan (4 years and I am outta here)!
Whole Foods does rock and Ann Arbor is probably the only place for vegans to go besides La Shish and they are spread out every where. I hate where I live because it seems like no one cares what they look like or what they are eating. Yes, I live downriver *cringing* it sucks bad. Well welcome to Michigan!!! :)

does anyone know where (SE michigan) i could purchase veg message items? pangea has an awesome selection but the shipping costs would end up being more than the items (stickers, buttons, magnets) i'm purchasing.

TropicalGirl, thanks. We passed a couple of restaurants that advertised smoke free. Yay. One was in St. Clair Shores, the other, I think in Farmingtion; Part of the tour our pastor gave us was to show me where the Trader Joe's is. Yay! (St. Clair Shores, Roseville, Gross Pointe and one or two other little towns seem to run into together; When we were driving out on Sunday, I realized that our hotel was technically in Roseville. I think I'm going to have to go to the Auto Club and get a map, or five.) There was also at least one Greek restuaraunt and a Chinese restaurant in the area, too.
Eh. I shall be fine, I think.

Hey ... did you try that pizza?
I'm interested to know how it is. I actually want to try it, even though I'm not pizza's biggest fan. If it doesn't taste like butt it will be something my boyfriend can eat with me without me having to drag him out to a Thai place or to La Shish. He's got Americanized taste buds to the core.
Does anyone know where I can get herbs and spices in bulk in the metro Detroit/Ann Arbor area? There was one in my neighborhood that I loved, but they recently went out of business. :(

i'm not a big pizza person either, but even then you're better off ordering from another place that you know has vegan crust/sauce and just ordering it cheeseless. there were hardly any toppings at all and the craziest part was that there were just plain squares of tofu on it. i sprinkled some soy parmesan on it which made it more edible, but....NOT RECOMMENDED.
btw, my husband's omni so he got his own pizza (and he LOVES pizza!!!) and didn't care for it too much, so maybe just not the greatest pizza place to begin with.

I just wanted to say I can totally relate. I've lived Downriver in one form or another my whole life and we are out of here in about 1.5yrs (headed East). Downriver is not for anyone that is a non-smoker, alternative eater or concerned with the environment/animals even in a basic sense.
I hear ya !

Hi Rodolfo! I live in Saline also. We just moved her last year from Ferndale. I used to live in Ann Arbor as well back in my college days.
My husband, son (20 months) and I are all vegetarian (mostly vegan). It is nice to see we aren't the only ones in Saline. :bobo: :vebo:
We eat at home all the time now, since there is absolutely nothing veg in Saline. We have to go to Ann Arbor for any decent veg food, which is hard with the baby, especially now that he is walking. We always go to Seva every New Year's Eve for their special dinner, but this year our little guy wanted to toddle around the restaurant.
I'd love to meet you in the real world someday.

Wow, That's great to know of another veg*n family in Saline!
We've just become friends with anothe coulple that lives downtown (like us) that are also vegan. Email me, and perhaps we can do a playdate or something. We've got two kids, so that keeps us pretty darn busy, but it'd be nice to make new friends with kids that know how it is.
I'm not on this board much due to time constraints, so really email me. I would appreciate it. dolfo@umich.edu

I'd be interested, depending on when it is and if I have transportation.

Meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com) has many vegan meetups listed. There is a group that does meet. I have never gone [lack of money at the moment ... means no gas in car or a way to pay for my meal ... they often meet at restaurants]. There is an Animal Rights group as well.
I'd be interested in a meet-up! Well, as soon as I get my new car, that is, as mine is a falling-apart piece of junk. xD
Anyone here from Goodrich?

So i'm tooling around the internet, and imagine my surprise when i find evidence that there are OTHER veg*ns in SALINE of all places!
I actually live in east lansing, right now, but i'm from saline, my parents still live there, graduated from high school at saline about 5 years ago, and i'm back from time to time.
as far as veg food in town, i have it on good authority that the pretzels from benny's are vegan (and if you haven't had them, you truly are missing out.) there are a few veg options at jasmine, and a few other places. nothing great, but workable if you have to go out with people. usually i go to ann arbor, though.

i am from okemos (practically a burb of east lansing) and am travelling to kalamazoo next monday- i need to know if there are any vegan restaurants there that you recommend for a dinner-type setting. most of what we can find are more coffee-shop, lunch, or cafe style places.
