There are a lot of things to see in salem. I liked the basic witch museum :-) Its simplistic but educational.
http://www.salemwitchmuseum.com/about/index.shtml
There are a LOT of tours, and they are all named very similarly so its hard for me to really remember the names of each.... The Witch dungeon museum is ok, there's some live acting and depending on the actors its better sometimes than others. But the dungeon downstairs is very creepy and cool.
I've not really been on a BAD tour persay, some are better than others, but its all educational and nothing is really very expensive, so you'll probably do just fine. For food, very near the parking garage there is a little mall area, and there is a bagel place in there that has bagels and veggie toppings (you can make a vegetable hummus sandwich there, and depending on the bagel it would be vegan.) That's where I eat every time I go to salem.
Also be sure to go through the cemetery there, there are a lot of historical graves and its pretty creepy/cool.
Oh, you are going during october??? I've never been to salem in october, but there are TONS of things going on. Be sure to visit the tourism information center as soon as you get there, they will have lots of updated information. I bet there is at least one haunted hayride, I usually enjoy those, and I bet there will be some pumpkin lightings as well. Have fun!!

This group boomed after I left Boston, but for those still in the area who mght not know about this event:
Dear Boston Vegetarian Society List,
We hope you are saving Sunday, June 18, to come to our annual
event at the Peace Abbey! It's a day to bring your friends and
family to soak in the beauty and "good vibes" of this unique
place, share a scrumptious vegan potluck meal, and enjoy the speaker
program that follows. Details are below.
We'll send an update next week that will address
1) Parking (which is free and easy!)
2) Car pooling - save resources and meet new people!
3) Directions
4) RSVPing
For now, we want to introduce you to the animals who live at the
Peace Abbey's small sanctuary for rescued farm animals.
Veganpeace Animal Sanctuary is a safe haven for "food production"
animals who have escaped their fate in a slaughterhouse. The Sanctuary
is an integral part of the educational programs of the Peace
Abbey.
GABRIEL, rescued from the fate of a veal calf, became Emily the
Cow's adoring friend.
LILLY is a pony looking very much like a unicorn with her tuft
of white hair. Since Emily's passing, Lilly and Gabriel are good
friends sharing the same pasture.
WILLY and JACOB are the two goats, who are best of pals, sharing
a wooded lot and their own little house.
KWANZA and GRACIE are two turkeys, who celebrate Thanksgiving
every day.
And here's a repeat of the info sent earlier:
SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2006, AT 1 P.M. (Rain or shine)
The Boston Vegetarian Society's annual event at the PEACE ABBEY
in Sherborn is one of the highlight events of our year. We will
soak in the beauty and "good vibes" of this unique place, meet
the animals in the small sanctuary for rescued farm animals,
stroll the grounds and view the Pacifist Memorial and Gandhi statue,
the magnificent Sacred Cow Animal Rights Memorial statue of
Emily, and explore the Abbey and the Life Experience School with
their many interesting artifacts.
Our special guest speaker will be Jonathan Balcombe, PhD, who
holds a doctorate in ethology (animal behavior). He will speak on
his book, Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling
Good. Dr. Balcombe will focus on animals, their capacity
to feel pleasure, and the implications these findings have in our
relationship to them. His book has just been released, and will
be available for sale and signing. He has a Powerpoint
presentation, which I hear is very beautiful!
http://www.pleasurablekingdom.com
ALL WELCOME!
This is a family-friendly event, and we really do encourage you
to bring your friends and family, especially non-vegetarians.
We would love them to hear Dr. Balcombe's presentation. We'll
have plenty of room!
1 P.M. VEGAN POTLUCK
Bring a favorite dish to share that is free of meat, poultry,
fish, dairy, eggs, and honey. No prepping on site, so dishes
should be ready to serve, and please include serving implements
(labeled with your name). A card with ingredients listed helps
those with food allergies.
Need recipe ideas? See our page:

3 P.M. SPEAKER PRESENTATION - Jonathan Balcombe, PhD
We have booked the church next to the Peace Abbey for the
speaker program. It seats 350, so we'll have plenty of seats! Please
bring your friends to this event! We especially want
non-vegetarians to hear this program. :-)

ABOUT THE PEACE ABBEY:
The Peace Abbey is a center which encourages non-violence,
peacemaking, social justice, and compassionate living. Peace and
justice advocates from around the world have come here, including
Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. It was home, until her death
two years ago, to Emily the Cow, who gained worldwide celebrity
years ago with her dramatic slaughterhouse escape, and became
spokescow for veg living. A magnificent, life-size bronze statue of
Emily is the center of the Animal Rights Memorial on site.

I love the peace abbey! My husband and I spoke to a man there about possibly getting married there, but it really is too small for anything over 25 people, and we wanted about 50. He had a lot of wonderful ideas about how to make the ceremony more personal and original, and we used a lot of them when we did get married! The vibes there ARE incredibly good :-)

Looks like I'll be living in Amherst this summer. Anyone have any must see, or must go to areas in Amherst/North Hampton area?

I'll be in Boston for business next week. Can anyone recommend parking in the vicinity of Grasshopper restaurant? The second night, I'm planning to eat at Phoenicia or Addis Red Sea. The first night, I'll be driving in from Logan at rush hour. The second night, I'll be driving down from Tewksbury.
I'm looking forward to sampling some good ethnic fare! Down here in redneck heart-attack alley where I live, we don't have access to good ethnic restaurants.
P.S. www.veganboston.com is my reference source - seems to be credible.

I don't know amhurst, sorry! Maybe someone else will.
RunsWithFoxes - there really isn't much in terms of parking near the grasshopper - just street parking - are you looking for parking for all day, or just for dinner? If you are looking just for dinner, just drive up and down the street that the grasshopper is on - I usually find a spot pretty quickly. If you go too much past the Kentucky Fried Chicken, there is no more street parking, so turn around and try hanging a left at the intersection to stay on the road the grasshopper is on. Its a bit tricky but its definitely worth it!
Addis Red Sea is wonderful, I love it. I never park around there though, I take the orange line to Back Bay and walk from there, its just a few minutes on foot. I've never heard of Phoenicia, so I can't vouch for that one ;-)
driving in Boston sucks, not everyone can handle it. I, for example, can not.

Thanks for the parking hints. I'll give it a try. It will be 25F cooler today in Boston than in the deep South, which will be a nice change of pace. :hamster:

bigduf........amherst/northhampton are both great towns, you will find a lot of veg friendly options for eating there,
i shop at the whole foods and trader joes there ( its actually in s hadley, but right up the road).
In South Hadley which is around the corner from Amherst there is a Whole Foods Market and a Trader Joe's. In Northampton threre is Cornucopia which is a natural grocery/helath food store. There are a lot of veg friendly resturants in the Northampton/ Amherst area. As far as things to do I cannot think of anything in that area besides the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst.
Anybody in Dartmouth/ New Bedford ?

In New Bedford, there is a new resturant named Adega, which has a wide selection of vegetarian meals. I went there to check it out, and it is awesome. I went with a few friends, and we are going back next week. I'll be sure to bring my appetite, :hungry: !

I had a great meal this evening at Udupi, a 100% vegetarian Indian restaurant in Worchester/Shrewsbury. The restaurant is easy to find - just off Rt. 9 west of I-495 on Maple Ave. I had the Royal Thali - one of the best I've encountered anywhere (I've sampled many such thalis at Indian restaurants around the world). The restaurant was fairly crowded, indicating that it's popular with the locals (not many tourists so far out of Boston).

Speaking of the Worchester area...for my birthday recently, we went to this restaurant there that imo was really good. I believe it is called Tortilla Sam's. Its Mexican food, but was very tasty. One thing i liked (maybe not for everyone depending on how you feel about eating with omnis) is that there was something for everyone. My family could have the things they like (gross!) like meat and cheese...and i could have my stuff without having to explain for a half hour what vegan is and why i won't eat eggs or honey.
I got the health nut burrito and TOFU WINGS!!! They are basically strips of tofu with either BBQ or Buflow sauce, though i don''t know if the BBQ is vegan, i forget. but both of the things i ordered were really good. And i am very picky when it comes to tofu.
Basically, I really enjoyed myself. It was Vegan/Vegetarian/Omni/Picky-eater friendly, reasonably priced, tasty food, and if you are vegan or have allergies all you have to do is tell the waiter and you will be all set for the evening. It was a good B-day and everyone had fun. There arent many tourists because it's not Boston..just locals and college students.

GREAT BARRINGTON — Diets, according to author and nutritionist Steve "Sproutman" Meyerowitz, should be as varied as the people who undertake them.
"We all have different faces," he said. "We all have different stomachs and, when we get up in the morning, we all put on different clothes. We should recognize that our diets should be that way, too."
That said, yesterday's panel on Healthy Eating decidedly favored vegetarianism and veganism. Two of the three panelists, chef Rachel Port and chef-caterer Joan Embree, are vegetarians, and Meyerowitz is a vegan.

Hi!
I’m a vegan singer/songwriter from NYC area. My husband and I are planning to move to Boston in June. I’m looking for work in a field I can feel passionate about. I have extensive retail and reception experience, as well as perfomance experience.
Anyone know a good organization hiring? I'm willing to fetch coffee and do other menial tasks for a company I love, but am over 30, so I can't take an internship unfortunately (too many bills!).
I’d happily work for a music studio, non profit office or store, as long as they were related to either veganism or music (both would be great!)
We do not yet own a car, so anything close to the T would be a major help.
I’m happy to send references and music or work resumes upon request.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.:sunny:
Please contact me through this site for now.
Thanks so much!

veggie planet in harvard square is by far the best restaurant ever. Their safe and sound pizza (with added romesco sauce.. my secret!) is fantastic, and so is dinner for henry!
Hey guys, I live in Boston and I've been to most of the restaurants mentioned in this thread except for Country Life. I must check it out. They don't seem to have a website can someone tell me a bit more about it and why the hours are weird?
I love to eat at Boloco which is on Mass Ave, across from the Berkeley School of Music. You can have them make you a vegan burrito with organic tofu which will blow your mind. I love that they offer organic tofu. Quite unusual for such a carnivorous city like Boston.
I did a 5 course vegan tasting at Veggie Planet in May that absolutely rocked. I hope they continue to have them. I sat with the owner of the restaurant and he and his wife were fabulous.
