From June through mid-August I'm gonna be living in Mt. Airy with my cousin and her manpartner and will be making hella commute to Suitland for internship with the Census Bureau. My questions are thusly:
1) What are some good vegan-friendly restaurants/grocery stores in the area?
2) What would be the best (ie fastest) way to get from Mt. Airy to a metro station?
1) really not too familiar with that area. All I know is that there is an
excellent Whole Foods in Gaithersburg, about 30-40 minutes to your southwest, and there is a fantastic store called Roots with tons of vegan groceries in Clarksville, about 30 minutes to your east-southeast. You might find something in Frederick which is a little closer, but I really don't know what's there.
2) Mt. Airy to Suitland every day? Yikes! Your best Metro bet will be the Shady Grove station in Gaithersburg. (Take 27 to 124; avoid 270 if you can.) Be aware, though, that once you get to the station (which could easily take well over 30 minutes in rush hour), you're still looking at at least 70 minutes on the Metro. You might consider taking a commuter train from Frederick, although that will likely cost you. This is all assuming you have a car for the first leg of the trip, although I would think there would be some sort of commuter bus option.
Any vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the University of Maryland - College Park area? My boyfriend and I are going to visit Walter Reed but are stopping at U of M on our way down... Thanks.
Right in College Park itself is a nice little place called Berwyn Cafe. Most of the eateries there near campus would qualify as veg-friendly.
If you like Indian food, make the short drive west on Route 193 to the intersection with New Hampshire Ave. where there are 2 veggie restaurants right by each other - Udupi and Woodlands. They are both terrific. If you like Indian food and are coming into town from the northeast on I-95, make a quick stop in Columbia for Mango Grove.
You may want to go into DC and check out places like Vegetate (expensive but good) or Asylum. Check the DC thread for comments on other favorite spots. And if you have some time, head over to Rockville for Vegetable Garden.
Addresses and phone numbers for most of these places can be found at http://www.vegdc.com Good luck with your trip.

Yeah, it's either this longass commute or pay 650 a month for rent. I was scoping the DC Metro site out and the Shady Grove one looks to be the best option. I don't mind long rides on public transportation so long as I have something substantial to read, or barring that, a pillow.
Uh, I'm kinda banking on bumming a ride to that metro station hahaha. I sound less prepared than I am, but I think this was more an implicit agreement between my cousin and I than explicit. Hence the twinge of uneasiness.
Thanks for the grocery recommendation, too.

They have just opened a new My Organic Market located just south (I think) of Frederick. Check out www.myorganicmarket.com They have tons of basic vegan groceries and prepared foods.
not sure about restaurants there. If you're willing to drive a little, there is a veg Indian place in Gaithersburg (Madras Palace) and an awesome but expensive place in Clarksville (Great Sage). Each is about a half hour drive. Listings are available at www.vegdc.com/restaurants.php#md

Hey! Sorry that I did not see this sooner. I live in Frederick. How long will you be staying here?
For markets, there is a wonderful co-op called Common Market (http://commonmarket.com/). I love it there and many items are even cheaper than at Whole Foods!! They are also very veg*n friendly and label their pre-made items if they are "Vegetarian", "Vegan" or "Macrobiotic". We are getting a MOM's here but not for awhile yet. There's a great MOM's in Rockville though. Also in Rockville, which is in neighboring Montgomery County, is a store called Pangea (http://www.veganstore.com/)which is open on the weekends. Then you have Whole Foods and while there aren't any in Frederick County (grumble), the closest ones are in Rockville and another in Gaithersburg (which is the better one). Regular gocery stores like Giant Eagle, Bloom and Safeway have their share of veg*n products as well but they vary from store to store which can be a pain to remember.
The Orchard Cafe is also in Frederick. It's on North Market Street in downtown. It's not strictly vegan though. I don't go out to eat a lot so I don't have a ton of recommendations there but there are lots of places in Rockville and Gaithersburg as well. If I can think of any more I will post them here.

Cool, yeah Frederick has tons of options. The Common Market is pretty new and features all the stuff that you could ever want. From branded items to locally-grown produce, its super great. Their eggless egg salad is the best!
Haven't been to MOM yet. Was planning on going on Sunday but the BBQ went longer than expected. Apparently though its pretty nice.
As for restaurants--there is a great Ethiopian restaurant downtown(http://tinyurl.com/2cs5jw). I'm actually not sure how vegan some of the foods are, but they certainly have vegan options, since Ethiopia has many bean options. There is also a great Vietnamese restaurant as well (http://tinyurl.com/ytkxmq). I went there for my bday this year and it was amazing! She even made me a taro pudding which was vegan, since I told her that myself and my friend were vegans. Very hospitable, and very welcoming.
Hope that helps.

Hey, is there anyone here who lives in Harford county? I'm looking for restaurants with vegan options. I'm vegan, GF is allergic to dairy, and I'm really getting tired of boca burgers.
A.
Not sure about good options in Harford Co., but you should make the short drive down to Baltimore where good options abound. Be sure to find your way to Yabba Pot.

Now that each state has its own forum I'll be closing the state threads. Please continue any discussion by starting a new thread in this forum. Thanks!
