View Full Version : Had my first meat craving today

I guess I have been lucky that I haven't craved cheese or meat yet when they used to be staples in my diet.

But today I wanted tuna. Canned tuna, at that. Ugh. The though of it right now makes me think "YUCK" but earlier I really wanted some.

Weird. How long does it take until you don't crave any of your old diet items again? I felt guilty even wanting meat, even though I didn't eat it.

I've been veg for 7 months, and about 2 months ago, I really really wanted chicken. My step mum brought some leftover that they had, because they were going out of town for a few days, and they didn't want it to spoil. I gave it to my daughter, but I really wanted to just take a bite. I didn't do it though, and I was proud of myself afterwards.

Just thinking about it now kinda makes me sick...

eekamax, canned tuna is the only meat I have ever craved since I went veg.
My solution: chickpea 'tuna' sandwiches.

Just take about 1/2 cup of chickpeas and 2 tbs of vegenaise (or you could use whatever mayo/miraclewhip type thing you prefer. Mash with a fork. Add a pinch of salt, and some nutritional yeast if you would like, and either some chopped celery and green onions. Spread between 2 slices of bread (preferably something grainy and full of whole wheaty goodness).
And enjoy that gooey yummy tuna like sandwich- cruetly free!

The longer you are meat free the less the cravings come and the less intense. I've been vegan for three years and every time I see a Red Lobster commercial for king crab legs I remember how much I used to enjoy them. Wish there was some vegan crab meat on the market.

It just takes time. The important thing is to not give into the cravings. Or risk getting a very upset stomach.

Been vegetarian for 7 months, wanted chicken two days ago.
My problem is that my boyfriend is omni and we both cook for each other, wasn't seriously going to eat it though, it was just the smell.

Chicken is the only thing I've missed. Maybe I need to hang out with more chickens, I'm sure that'd sort it out.

Haven't missed meat at all since I stopped eating it - but then, I'd been working for two years to become meat- free. The only thing I've ever really longed for in that period, was a proper hot- dog and a serving of taco - it is hard to be a veggie in Norway, it is almost impossible to find any "veggie" foods here, and if they're available, they're seriously overpriced. But in the end, I found a solution (what would I ever do without kidney beans and tofu??) and there are no more cravings whatsoever :)

Synergy, thanks for the chickpea spread tip! I was getting bored with my sandwich options--I will try this one today.

Oddly, I have had shrimp and crab cravings for years. The strange thing is that I am deathly allergic to shellfish. I developed the allergy when I was 19 and 19 was more years ago than I want to acknowledge. It wasn't like I had eaten a lot of shellfish up to that time...it wasn't as available back then (that sort of gives it away that I am 47! :sealed:) How can you crave something you could never really have???

Just call me crazy......

I crave Tuna a lot, too, actually. It used to be the only fish that I ate. But my mom now makes me "Tuna Salads" with this fake tuna we found at our natural grocery store.

It is different for everybody.

I've been veg for years and a while ago I wanted a ruben. I don't know what it was but my bf was eating it and I just wanted to take a bite... I didn't and now I think back to it and Im' like

I have been having some seriously disturbing cravings ever since I went vegetarian a month or two ago, and vegan two weeks ago. Think...McDonald's Egg McMuffins, different varieties of sausage sandwiches absolutely drowning in cheese, spam (:stinkeye:), fish fillets, and shrimp among other things. Luckily the only things I've indulged in were some veggies in cheese dip and cream cheese last weekend.

Junk food is strangely addicting. I hadn't had any of these things for long time before I cut out all my meat intake, but they're the only things I ever crave.

I've been a vegetarian for 1 1/2 years and I haven't had a craving for meat for ever. And when I do, it's not that bad. It doesn't last that long. Then I get sick thinking about it.
