At the grocery store vegan ice cream is very expensive, at CND$6-7 per quart. Do you guys know where to get cheaper vegan ice cream?

Yes, it can be pricey....
have you thought about making your own? I tried it, it is pretty good ! plus you can add your choice of flavors and such.
I googled "recipe vegan ice cream" and got several links back!

Ditto on making your own. VB even has some recipes here. You can control how it tastes, and how much you want to make.

this does not answer your question (sorry, i'm taking over your thread  ) but what about any items that are safe to order out? you know, it's summertime and people go out for ice cream cones and such. does dairy queen, baskin robbins, etc. have anything??

Can you get Swedish Glace brand ice cream? We get it for about 3 quid in the UK. You can also make a decent soft serve by blending frozen bananas, soy milk, a wee bit of maple syrup in a blender until creamy.

Nope, I'm in Ontario and it's that expensive here too, everywhere I've looked. I look at the regular grocery stores and a number of health food stores. Right now the 1 quart soy delicious is on sale for $6 and I was all excited because that's comparatively cheap. :-/ I'm going to look into making my own.

I'm not positive it's 100% vegan, but I once bought a box of TCBY frozen chocolate sorbet bars from Smart & Final (a non-membership chain foodservice store) that my whole family loved, and didn't contain any obvious animal ingredients (it's non-dairy and kosher). Maybe you can find that kind of "accidentally vegan" frozen treat too, at better prices than the frozen soy products in supermarkets?

I think Dairy Queen likely still has a few slushie-type treats that don't contain any dairy? I haven't been there since becoming vegan, but it's worth a look, if you end up there with friends and don't want to be left out. Unfortunately, if you're hard-core vegan, you're supporting a chain which is directly contradicting your values. But it's nice to be able to go out with friends, so things even out, I guess :) I *do* know that my lactose-intolerant mum is able to find something to eat there, so you should have a few options.

At other places, ask about their sorbets and such, or see if they have slushies. The higher quality the ice cream parlour, the greater the chance that their sorbets will be vegan. We have an awesome parlour nearby which carries both soy ice cream and fruit sorbets- which contain only fruit, water, and sugar, woohoo! Just ask when you're there, usually they're able to cater to you *somehow*.

EDIT; Also, are there any commercial sherbets which are vegan? I've never looked (I don't eat commercial ice cream much and when I do, it's the soy/rice sort), but I wouldn't be surprised if you could find one at your standard supermarket that was accidentally vegan.

Everytime I look, they always mess the sorbets and sherberts up by adding milk. I haven't seen one in the grocery store that was cheap and vegan. There is one that is expensive and probably vegan .... I think it's called "all fruit" or something. It's $5 for a pint.

I noticed that Whole Foods just started carrying their own brand of vegan ice cream (although it does contain "natural flavors"). It costs $5 for a half gallon.

Yeah. It was a new item though, so maybe it isn't in every store yet.

If you email Whole Soy Food and Co. (who make the most delicious soy yogurt and soy frozen yogurt on the planet!), they will send you some generous coupons (we just used our 1.00 off on frozen yogurt at Wild Oats and they were already on sale so it was like 1.98). Most of these amazing companies will send you coupons - you just have to ask! Purely Decadent will send you a coupon for a free one :) Yes, I know - amazing, isn't it? That's why I love them!
