The place to dicuss local topics and to meet others in your area.
Aren't there any Iowan veg*ns? :(
I was born in Fort Dodge and was raised in a small town (200 people tops) for the first two years of my life. :)

Meo--are you still in Iowa?
My parents are both from Iowa and I get to the Sioux City area fairly frequently. Talk about your devoid-of-good-vegan-eats town. Yikes!!

I was stranded in Ft. Dodge in 1991 over halloween! My friend Sheri was in Des Moines and I left my kids with her for trick-or-treating while i went to Ft. Dodge just for the night and then the big ice storm hit! I remember MN got 30 inches of snow! I was stuck there for 3 days and poor Sheri ran out of formula for my then 1 mo. old Christine.
I lived in Des Moines off and on for a couple years. I was there for the floods of '93, whoopee! No water for a whole month!
(whew! sorry....what a flashback! :D )

I lived there nearly all my 'till I fled to Oklahoma on January 10, 2002. Oklahoma was worse, so back to Iowa I returned in May. A month later I made a second retreat, to my sancuary, Milwaukee.

That ice storm was awesome! I nearly died when a large hunk 'o' tree came tumbling down right in front of me.

I was just talking to someone about Dubuque. I don't know much about eastern Iowa, but I've heard this town is a real shi+hole.

I'm an Iowa vegan too. I live in Bettendorf. There aren't many vegans around here, and not many veg friendly restaurants either.

Hi Sarah, I live in Galena, IL--just across the river from you. I get to Dubuque about once a month or so. Have you been to the Oriental Market by the Asian Gourmet? They have a few interesting vegan things.

I'm from Ames, and I lived in Iowa City for a while, where I met many a vegan. I live in the south now, and I miss Iowa alot. I never thought I would say it but it's true.
Any of you been to Luther College? I've gone there for Dorian Music Camp the last two years, and that's my favorite place to be.

Thought I'd post this in some of the surrounding states in case anyone was interested. Some of us are meeting in Chicago for dinner and mayhem on Friday November 19th.

Hi all, I live in Washington state but now I visit Iowa every summer... (My Grandma just moved back to her hometown of Newton a couple years ago, so I go to visit her and those shirttail reletives I'd very seldom seen...).
I just have to say I admire all of you who live in the state and manage to be vegan - I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian and could find hardly ANYTHING!!!
Here's the story of my visit:
I visited family whom I didn't know real well, in Iowa (Newton, home of the Maytag plant and all...) this summer.
I carefully let them know I was vegetarian and they said "No problem".
SO - what did we have as my first dinner in Iowa?
Pork Chops, green beans with bacon, salad with little ham cubes and a hot german potato salad (with BACONNNNN).
Breakfast? Sausage, with HAM OMLETTES!
It got worse. I explained myself blue in the face - they nicely said "Oh, no problem" and continued to cook whatever...
Ugh. It didn't get any better. In desperation I offered to order pizza one night. (I'm not vegan) I asked the pizza place for a Veggie Piza and they paused and said "What do you want on that? The only vegetables we have are onions."
So while everyone ate their "piled high" pizzas, I had an Onion and Black Olive pizza.... oh yum!
We went to the State Fair (you DO have an awesome State Fair) and at LEASt I found a few things there - but definitely not the abundance of salads, fruit and fresh produce like our state fair has here...
I couldn't find ANY "Soy" food products at the fair, at the markets, anywhere... Is most of their soy used for animal feed and biodeisal or is it available as Human food too? If so, what stores?
HELP! I have to go back this summer! I'm bringing my own food!

Hmm, I guess Newton is a little behind the times. I found that where I lived in Iowa (Ames and Iowa City, and a little town near Cedar Rapids) had alot of options for vegetarians and vegans. Maybe if you headed towards one of the college towns you could stock up on supplies.

Yeah, Ames has wheatsfield grocery which is really great. Most restaraunts have veggie or vegan options. The Hyvee's there also carry a lot of stuff.

Ohhh yay! Other veg*ns in Iowa. I *love* Wheatsfield. I don't live in Ames (I'm in Ankeny), but I have friends/family in Ames, so I visit often. I stop at Wheatsfield almost everytime I'm in town.
I agree, Newton must be behind the times. I have no problem finding veg*an foods. I've heard of Newton, but I don't know anything about it. Is it a small town? Maybe if you go to a bigger town nearby you could find something?
