I was looking at the veggieboard gatherings photo page and it would be so neat someday to get some Iowa members together, although there would only be like...four of us going. Eh, oh well, just a thought.

iowa city is a great place to find people who care for farm animal welfare and the environment (i go to new pioneer coop every week, an hour's drive from home). however, the cedar rapids area is what most of iowa is like...dairy and genetically-modified food plants, tons of factories, and a population who greatly enjoys the wonders of eating at burger joints every day, throwing paper in the trash (the community college doesn't even have plastic recycling on site, and the resident pigs are killed in one hall for "feasts"...i could go on and on about my old school and "ecology day", featuring advice on which fish to eat and providing free hot dogs and soda  ), hunting (in public places, i tend to hear a lot of jokes about deer jerky, seal clubbing, and watching wounded animals die), fishing, animals as commodities or convenience, and generally having no regard for any life other than that of themselves and a few close family members and friends. i don't think i've encountered a person, family aside, who even knows what a "vey-gun" is around here. i must admit i am jealous that you can live in a place so different from this, even only 70 miles away!
sorry if that was a bit much; i've spent eighteen years in the suburbs outside this death-trap, and i tend to get carried away when i'm on the computer. i'm working on moving out to attend the university of minnesota/st. paul next year.

Well to the few of you out there who ever find yourself in Iowa city, Iowa... a new bakery/ coffehouse opened on the 300 block of South Dubuque St.(the first block south of the Sheraton hotel) called Grounds For Dessert. They have vegan desserts, waffles, panini (like sandwiches with special bread)... they even homemake their vegan cheese. It's good.

 Damn...it's too bad Iowa City is so far away. Sounds heavenly, though!

I have the opposite problem, everything is too close! And now I have this place a block away. My wallet is not happy. :/

True that. So what do you other Iowans do for fun in Iowa?

Iowa Citian here :)

I grew up in the most conservative county in Iowa (Sioux), and moved to the most liberal (Johnson). Weird. I like IC a lot except for the high cost of living and all the bars. It can be a bit pretentious here. I'm not complaining (most of the time) :p Love the free concerts at the U, the co-op, the eastern foods grocery, and the plethora of veggie friendly restaurants. I'm not complaining (most of the time) :p

Anyone want to have a veggieboards get-together, at a restaurant maybe? I love Masala too, but India cafe is generally quieter. I would go to Dubuque or the Quad Cities but options are limited there. Tho Exotic Thai in Davenport is really yummy.

That would be awesome...but unfortunately too far away for me.

During my time in Iowa we spent a lot of time drinking beer. Des Moines, and a few other cities might not be too bad, but Fort Dodge.... I don't want to be back there for any reason for a long time. I'll return when my Grandma dies.

New veggie here (only on day 3!). I grew up in Dubuque and have been living in Cedar Falls for the last 6 years. I only know one person who is veg*n here and he's moving in a couple weeks, so I hope to meet some more soon. :)

Hello fellow Iowans! I'm very new to vegetarianism (about a week). Right now I'm attending Iowa State and majoring in dietetics. I'm originally from Des Moines.
