...and gamers as well? nice to meet you. female gamers are very few and far between around marion/cr (about 250 mi from minden), and vegetarians are even more elusive here.

I got a great vegitarian sub at the panara at mall of the bluffs-- and yes it is onlyone sandwich they dont have much choice-- but I like that one. The Dundee Dell is in Dundee at 50th and underwood in Omaha.

Oh yeah: I heard McFosters food is pretty tasteless, on that reccomendation I wouldnt go there.

...and gamers as well. Hells yeah! Do you live in town or out in the country? If veg*ns are elusive where you are at, it must be a small place. It's funny that me and my sister are the only vegetarians at our high school (of about 500 students including elementary and middle school).:-/

By the way, Iowans, if you live in or around Council Bluffs, the Council Bluffs Public Library is having a poetry slam October 21st, I believe. Would be a cool opportunity to meet up with fellow Veg*ns!:nana:

Edit: It's for teens only.

I look like a teenager, but I'm in Milwaukee and rarely leave my side of town.

actually, i am less than five minutes' drive away from cedar rapids, a major city in eastern iowa--and home to genencor, the genetically-modified foods plant. my school has somewhere around 14,000 students enrolled, and i can't find a single vegetarian, let alone a vegan. let's just put it this way: there are 'beef education' and 'swine education' centers at my school, and i don't think those places are where animals go to learn--one building on campus has 'hog roasts' regularly. on a final note, i was surprised to find out we had 'ecology day' at my college. however, the majority of what was discussed involved the new, unheard-of concept of riding bicycles, and free hot dogs and soda were provided outside...that's right, school body, slaughter and chemicals are just wonderful in regards to the life of our planet. :wall:

i think my only hope at finding like-minded people in iowa will be when i move to iowa city (hopefully within the next few years). i'm sure even my visit to america's dairyland with my omnivorous (and proud of it) boyfriend next week will be more vegan-friendly for me than being in c.r..

forgive me for the rant; it usually can't be helped when cedar rapids is a topic of discussion.

did anyone else go to new pioneer coop's 35th anniversary party in iowa city last night?

edit
really, no one? it was quite nice; there was a large vegan cake ("very berry" with strawberries--my favorite), lots of free stuff and fresh fruit up for grabs, and daby touré performed at the end of the night.

I'm in marion iowa! it's near cedar rapids. i'm only 13, and i've been realizing what actually happens to animals with the food i ate! i've been vegetarian around a year and a vegan for about 3 months (although, i don't think my parents really approve, but hey - it's my life!

anmllvr,
i've lived in marion since birth, actually. it's always nice to find people here that are so close to home. here's a friendly little tip about the area: avoid marion high school and linn-mar like the plague...definitely go to an alternative h/s and your life will be so much better.

Yay!:bobo: Another "Iowan" on the boards!

My parents hated me for becoming vegetarian and didn't think it would stick, but I'm still going strong and proud of it! My parents are accepting now even though they don't like the whole idea of not eating meat.

I got a good reminder of mother Iowa at the co-op I volunteer at running into a box Iowa pork products. I saw Iowa on the box, and thought to myself, well this ain't crystal meth, so it must be dead pig. Fortunately the co-op is mostly vegetarian, and the cafe is 100% at that.

i know...that's pretty much all iowa is...aren't we the world leader in 'pork' production? no wonder i don't know any vegetarians (in person). i live about ten minutes from a dairy processing plant, and about fifteen from a genetically-modified food plant, as well. great place to be an ecologically-conscious young vegan :brood:.

someday, someday...

I don't personally know any vegetarians/vegans in Iowa either. I know a couple people who were temporarily veg but couldn't stick with it, but other than that, no such luck.

Living in Davenport, my sister has a friend that is vegetarian. Umm... I once found a vegan from Fort Dodge on some community website for teens and young adults, but I don't remember the site.

Techgoat, my dad used to work for Horme before it shut down when I was three or four. He had a hog whip that he somehow got on the job (he didn't whip pigs for a living) that he would use to frighten my friends and I when were younger. It made an f'n loud noise when it hit the concrete, but the scare was good natured, not unlike telling a horror story.

Yeah, me and my sister are taking our horses to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines next week. This is our first time going. We take the horses in on Tuesday, than have the show on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm excited but a little nervous. The competition is going to be tough! The drive there will take about two hours or so. Anyone else going to the State fair?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really enjoing the cooler weather. The heat wave is finally over! It's a stunning 80 degrees where I am. I hope it lasts...

i hope it lasts, too...it's great that i can actually breathe, now that it's not 80% humidity all the time.

I'm not much for the fair. I have problems finding food, personally. once I found this stand with cherry lemonade though, and it kicked ass!
