Hello everyone! I am from Columbia City, Indiana, which is about 20 minutes from Fort Wayne. I help run an animal rights group in Fort Wayne and we are trying to get more active members in this area. We are also willing to do a little driving to help out with protests, etc. in other areas. If any of you know of any veg or animal rights groups in your area we could work together with or are interested in helping us out please let me know!!! :vebo:

Yes, there are supposed to be meetups, assuming that enough people sign up. Here is the link: http://vegan.meetup.com/

It might be fun! I don't know how many people usually show up or what age bracket it usually is or anything. I imagine it's varied.

My job is transferring me to Indianapolis... Any reccomendations for Asian Markets? Health Food Stores? Etc... I already know there is a Wild Oats on the north side and a Trader Joes (Not sure where it is though) If anyone has the 411, PM me!

The Wild Oat's there puts Trader Joe's to shame as far as selection. There is also a health food store/chain, forgot the name though. I am sure Artichoke can tell you. I am not sure about Asian markets.

MonkeyandBunny is coming to Indy?! :bobo: :vebo: Yay!! :hamster:

Yes, there is a Wild Oats on the north side, off of 86th Street.

Then there is Trader Joe's by Castleton (also north side). Also that way is Winding Way Farms, a small health food store. They are both right by the Castleton mall.

Then there is Georgetown Market at I think what is considered the east side, slightly north. I have never been there.

Then there is The Good Earth, another health food store that is on the north side, but I haven't been there, either.

Wild Oats has a deli, but I have yet to check it out. They always have vegan and vegetarian items. I think the Wild Oats is awesome!!!

Do you know which side you will be living on? How did this happen? Okay...maybe I should have written this in a PM, but I'm excited for you (not that Bloomington isn't nice)

i worked at wild oats when they first opened and that place is shaaaaady. such classics as "organic grapes from california" coming out of a box that said product of mexico. maybe they meant the californian penisula or something? i also remember the managers telling people that they were giving the customer a better price on an item because it wasn't marked, but instead they were just making up the "normal" price and selling it for the regular price. they had big signs up that said they didn't sell anything with hydrogenated oils in it, but they did. the list goes on. plus they have a trash compactor which = no dumpstering. LAME.

good earth is awesome.

georgetown market is really nice and fancy. it makes me uncomfortable sometimes because i can't figure out how they can afford that nice of a building. probably mafia ties or something, haha.

there is an oriental market at 5344 w 38th street that i have not been to, but that someone gave me a hilarious calendar from. (super airbrushed girls riding scooters). there is an indian market in the same building with india palace and udupi. thats on lafayette rd and i think its near the oriental market.

winding way farms sells mostly vitamins and stuff. probably 2/3 of hte store is vitamins and supplements. the grocery section has somewhat poor selection, but they do have the essentials.

there are 2 trader joe's and both are on the north side. they are even on teh same street. one is in castleton on east 82nd street. its just west of 465. if you head west from there, 82nd turns into 86th and the other trader joes is on west 86th, a little bit west of township line rd and east of michigan rd. its in a strip mall with a roly poly and panera bread. at township line and 86th there is a chinese restaurant called cheng du which i have already talked about in this thread. SOOOOO GOOOOD.

I am not familiar with Good Earth, ETC. Do they have a good produce (organic) section?

Thanks. :hi:

good earth has a small produce section. i'm not sure what all they have. they certainly do not have as much as wild oats. i just really hate wild oats.

Okay. Thanks!

I really like Wild Oats. All of the employees seem to be really helpful and they have a wide selection. I would think if they were misrepresenting their products and/or produce, they would be fined by a regulatory agency and corrective action would be taken. Did that ever happen when you were working there, ETC?

sometime after i stopped working there, the dude who was gm when i worked there got fired for losing a ton of money or something. then the dude who was my manager became gm and i guess he got caught embezzling. i dont know of any lawsuits or fines they've had to pay, though. its possible that the managers there now aren't as bad. i imagine most of the things that were really ****ty about that place had everything to do with those 2 assholes. i'd still rather shop at a local store than a big chain store.

Hi Everyone,

I just found this site and thought I'd post here. My DH and I are new vegetarians. We live on the south side of Indy and have a 7 month old son we plan to raise a vegetarian :)

Hello...

I live in southern CA right now, but I'll be moving to Muncie, IN - probably in January. My fiance will be moving there in August. I'm glad to see that there are a lot of good stores and restaurants in Indianapolis! Does anybody know of anything closer to Muncie? I saw that there was a store in Anderson...seems like that is in the vicinity.

Hey guys! I'll be in Merrillville 7/6-7/9 and can find NO VEGAN places listed online----HELP!!! :)

Artichoke47

There definitely are no vegan places in Merrillville. I know there's a cool health food store in Illinois right outside of the Indiana border. I can't think of the name right now. Your best bet is to go to Chicago Diner for a night. It's a bit of a drive from Merrillville, especially when traffic is bad, but totally worth it!

There's a restaurant called Twin Happiness in Crown Point (which is by Merrillville).

I'm here, too (Auburn/Garrett) :hi: ! I like the little health food section in Kroger, and the people at Nature's Cornocopia are really good about helping you find stuff and ordering it for you if they don't have it! There is also a great little natural food/homeopathic store on Anthony in Ft.Wayne called The Health Food Shoppe. They carry my favorite addiction: Primal Strips!

And don't forget about the Flat Top Grill at Jefferson Pointe Mall in Ft.Wayne! VERY vegan friendly!! Going to try to make it there for lunch sometime this week! Look it up (and other places you have questions about) on this site that was created by someone from South Bend:
