So another question about atlanta.
I hear there is a coop in atlanta. Does anyone shop there? Is it a good place for weekly groceries? Does it have a website I was unable to find it.
There's also Life Grocery which is a food coop that's been around for AGES. It's in Marietta up the street from "The Big Chicken" [a local landmark... of sorts]. I shop at "Life" weekly and find stuff here that I can't find anywhere else. Btw, they have the best bulk section I've ever seen! Website is by the same name. (In fact, I was there, today!)
Harry's Farmer's market is a stones throw away, and I shop there, too.
(I drive down from Canton which is north of Woodstock for those of you who aren't familiar with all the myriads of sub's. :) )

Hey... ethnic restaurant question:
Hubby and I are going for a RARE night out on Saturday and want to try a new ethnic restaurant. Something OTHER than european or american. Like anything from the Asian, Indian or African continent would be nice. Even better is if they dress true to their background and the restaurant also reflects their ethnicity.
Any suggestions?
And since we're so far up on the NW side of town, going to Athens or even gwinnett is out of the question. But cherokee, bartow, cobb, fulton or western dekalb is okay.
Whatcha got for me??? :D
(Oh, can you also give me a heads up on the $$$ range, too? Just so we're not floored when we get the bill. :p TIA!!!)

Lawrenceville HWY (29) on the way toward decatur has three vegetarian Indian restaurants. I'm rather fond of Udipi Cafe. and don't worry, it's not too expensive.

as a former village pizza employ, i can guarantee you that the vegan deluxe is actually vegan.
Wes (the owner) used to work at Grant Central pizza, over in east atlanta. while he was working there, he noticed a lot of vegans coming in, and saw that having a vegan pizza complete with soy cheese would be a good niche to fill.
so, when he opened up village, he decided to do just that. the cheese (vegan gourmet), and the three fake meats (gimme lean ground beef, gimme lean sausage, and smart deli pepperoni) are all bought from sevananda (vegetarian co-op in little five).
instead of using the normal pizza sauce, which has parmasean cheese, they use the marinara sauce on the vegan pizzas.
also, try out the garlic bread (with or without soy cheese).

Where did you guys end up going? You might want to try Thai House in Roswell sometime... not really an ethnic experience per se, but they do have really good food for both omnis and veg*ns. (see the back page of the menu for the veggie options...)
Hope you found something good!

We went to Vatica Vegetarian Indian restaurant in Marietta. They make one full meal each night and serve it thali style. It's all you can eat. Naturally, I avoid the raita (yogurt). The only thing you need consult a menu for is if you want to order ala cart some extra side items, drinks or desserts. Otherwise, you pay $7.99 for lunch and $8.99 for dinner.
You come in, sit down and they serve you water and your meal comes right away. Then every few minutes, they come through with a cart and ask if you want more of any particular food. It was filling and very yummy!
We've since gone back for lunch.
One does have to watch it with the ghee, though. They made a mistake the first time we were there and one guy thought that a particular dessert was dairy free. I found out right after I ate it that it did indeed have ghee in it. (I ended up having a rough week as result but the mistake wasn't intentional. So, I figured I'd give them one more try.)
I found this place from happycow and all the reviews were glowing. One reviewer had commented that it spoke well for the restaurant to see so many Indian individuals and families there, as well. They were right.

We love Thai but have eaten it so much lately we wanted to try something different. [I make it at home.] However, we'll keep that name in mind for future outings. Most Thai places have problems giving you food that is truly free of the fish sauce. How does that place do?
I used to LOVE and go to a place in Marietta all the time. They'd make me meals that I *thought* were free of the fish sauce. Turns out, either they were using a very little amount I couldn't discern it or they were using shrimp paste and not telling me. I didn't discover this until I finally figured how to make my favorite dish that I enjoyed there so much at home. I had their dish at home, take out style to compare. I tasted the two, loved mine and then was shocked to discover that hiding in all that flavor was the faintest hint of something fishy. :notvegan: :spew: GROSS! The only way to have found it was the side-by-side comparison when that flavor revealed itself.
*sigh* So, now I have a really hard time eating at any Thai restaurant. I'm so disgusted at being lied to for all this time. ...And they were so NICE and smiling to me is the real cake toppper. :wall:

I'm moving to georgia this summer. Don't know anything about it..is it veg friendly? Good places to eat? What's it like down there? I'm from maryland. I hear everything is cheaper prices down there, and there's nicer people. I'm excited, but have no idea what to expect! Country living..here I come.
chelsea, what city are you moving to?

My parents showed me pictures of property in Georgia. This place has 10.87 acres, a small one story house (800 square feet). The pervious owner didn't live in that house, though. He lived in the 4000 square feet barn that he remodled into a home(with bedrooms, den, living room, kitchen, bathrooms, runing water..ect). There's a lot of pine trees on the property. There's dog kennels outside, with a dog house, and a big roof on the kennel themselves. The kennels are huge, and are hooked up to a pumb with drains and refreshes the water, so it's always clean new water in for the dogs. This will be good for when we have visitors as one of our dogs doesnt like strangers. It seems like the perfect place. There's also land for growing vegetables, and the whole property has been professionally landscaped. It's pretty nice.

Guacivore posted on page 8 (July 30 of last year) that they were closing.
Somewhere else round here we discussed this restaurant (I think it was this forum... maybe another). They've moved one or two times in the past but prolly should have stayed in Roswell. Would have done better, IMHO.
I don't think they had enough traffic.
Food was good but after 2 times eating there and immediately getting a migraine (within 5 minutes of walking out of the restaurant), I finally thought to ask if they used MSG. They did. I quit going. I falsely assumed that b/c they were veg that they didn't use such unhealthy methods of flavoring.
Alas, despite that, it is unfortunate that we lost a vegetarian restaurant b/c the city [that word means to encompass not just Atlanta city proper but ALL surrounding sub's] needs MORE of them.
Having said that... it's nice to see all the way up in Canton that many Chinese restaurants do have some vegan options. I had a nice dish last night, and I hadn't eaten Chinese in ages! Now, I'm craving going over to PF Changs. :)

My husband and I are planning our annual Thanksgiving road trip for Savannah this year. I was curious if any locals could recommend a vegetarian/ vege-friendly restaurant for Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving weekend, nothing too upscale, preferably family-friendly? It's a tall order, but any information is more than I already have! Thanks!

Okay, so I've lived in GA for only a few months. I live around an hour outside of augusta. Does anyone know of any veggie resturants in augusta? I would love to try one out.
Will be staying at the Hyatt in Buckhead over the next 3 days. Any opinions on Cafe Sunflower or Veggieland in that area?

Sorry to have missed your question when you were in Buckhead. My family and I have dined at Cafe Sunflower in both Buckhead and Sandy Springs, and we really, reeeeeally like both restaurants. It's my favorite place to eat for my birthday. Yay for vegan cake!
Veggieland is ok. Like a vegetarian's answer to a hotdog stand or diner. We've only been once and I wasn't impressed, but neither was I disgusted. Definitely have to decide for yourself there.
Again, sorry I didn't see your question earlier. :-/

Cafe sunflower is great! however it is one of the more expensive restaurants you could go to for vegan food in atlanta.
