I'll post the pictures we took if its okay with the others. =)
i've got no problem with that.
Hmm quiet board. Maybe someone will see this and offer some suggestions. We are planning a move to Georgia in the next 6-18 months. We haven't set for sure on a town (a lot will depend on jobs). We are a vegan family, pretty involved in animal rights. I think I am fairly liberal on most things, and love my children more than anything. I currently manage a winery in Nebraska (that's right...Nebraska) although I am orginally from NY.
What I am wondering is what ar the most animal/vegetarian/child friendly places in Georgia to live?
Thanks!

If you want to find a place that is relatively progressive as well as family-friendly, you'll need to move to the metro Atlanta area. The only other good options would be college towns like Athens, but that may not be as conducive to children and family oriented activities.
Within the Atlanta area, the most progessive areas are Decatur, midtown Atlanta, and neighborhoods like East Atlanta. Generally, the further into the suburbs you get, the more conservative the population. Once you get out in the rural areas, all bets are off. I am saying this as a GA native, so please no one get mad at me for this assessment. :) As with any move, you'll also want to do your research as far as crime statistics in any given area.
Welcome in advance. Keep us posted on your move.

Thanks for the info! We have decided on the Atlanta area. Now we are trying to line everything up! I have a couple of employment prospects lined up and will come down next month (I think) to interview and get housing. Then we will move the whole family down in May.

^ I agree totally.
Good luck, Juliet. I think you'll have a great time. I lived in metro ATL for 10 yrs, and aside from the heat I have no complaints. Here's the breakdown:
North - Cobb County. Conservative, republican. Lots of steakhouses & SUVs.
East - Dekalb County (Decatur). Progressive, liberal, Lots of parks & SUVs
South - Henry County. Somewhat rural. Nice folks. Lots of tractors.
West - I have no idea what's west of the city. I don't think anyone else does, either.
Midtown - young, old, bohemian, rich, poor, gay, straight... a full mix

I just joined the board and have to say hey to my fellow Georgians. I'm up in Blue Ridge, way north Ga. Anyone close? I leaflet all the time here and have never met another vegan close to me.
There are two Vegetarian restaurants within my close proximity!

So it looks like I am going to be moving to Atlanta. Does anyone have any helpful tips about finding an apartment? So far my girlfriend and I have been using craigslist and have been having trouble finding places under $1000. Is this an unreasonable goal for the area? She will be going to Georgia Tech, so we need something close to it.

i've never rented inside the perimeter so i'm not sure about that. a quick seach of the ajc's rental classifieds (http://www.ajchomefinder.com/) sort of points to yes, there's almost nothing under $1000. another option might be to live within walking distance of MARTA a couple of stops out.

Atlanta native and resident. I have to admit that Atlanta is a very vegetarian friendly city. I have no problems finding health food stores or vegetarian restaurants. Most grocery stores here have a health food section. The city has me spoiled!

You can't find an apartment under $1,000? Most apartments in Atlanta are between $600 and $800 for a one bedroom.

What part of Atlanta is this in? My girlfriend wants to be close to Georgia Tech since she will be attending grad school there. So do to this we've been mostly looking in Midtown. Every once in a while we see and ad around $800 but rarely $600. Is it just the area I'm looking? If so do you know a different area in close proximity to Georgia Tech that has better prices?

I live in South Carolina, just outside of Savannah, Georgia. I go to Savannah all the time, does anyone know of any vegetarian or vegan restaurants there?
I didn't read through all the posts, so I don't know if anyone answered this or not (it has been nearly a month now... I just discovered this section though :) )...
Anyway, I live in Statesboro :spew: which is also fairly close to Savannah. I've never looked into the restaurants, but just today my sister told me of a Middle Eastern cuisine place there that's supposedly pretty well known and liked that serves veg*an dishes.
I'd love to try it out sometime, so I'll let you know if it's any good! :)

So another question about atlanta.
I hear there is a coop in atlanta. Does anyone shop there? Is it a good place for weekly groceries? Does it have a website I was unable to find it.

I'll really miss having them nearby.

I found a pizza place in Atlanta (intown/Cabbagetown) that offers a vegan pizza, complete with soy cheese, veggies, and soy meats. The place is called Village Pizza... has anyone else been there?
I ordered the "vegan village deluxe" pizza for carryout this evening... it was tasty, but next time I'll skip the meat analogues and just go for the soy cheese and veggies... not that the meat subs were bad, I just don't personally find them necessary.
DISCLAIMERS: I took the "vegan" labelling at face value and haven't done due diligence in asking about trace ingredients. Also, FYIW, this isn't an all veggie pizza place... it's a traditional place with expanded veg options.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows anything at all about this place??? Today was the first I'd ever heard of it. It seemed like a neat place and I'd like to be able to recommend it, but want to settle the "is the veg stuff really all-vegan" question first.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Who else loves The Grit??
I live in Milledgeville, but I go up to Athens often to eat at my favorite restaurant, The Grit. Best tofu ever, period. Thai of Athens also has lots of good veggie options.
My favorites in Atlanta are R. Thomas (where else can you get amazing veg food 24/7?) and the Flying Biscuit.
