I was wondering if anyone has ever came up wth a raw shampoo that you could also eat? Sounds crazy, but just thought I would ask.

I use coconut oil (the same stuff I put in my recipes) for moisturizer and hair conditioner.

A lot of rawies use a combo of apple cider vinegar, avocado, citrus juice and sea salt.

Ok, do you know if that mixture has any foaming action?

I still need a recipe for raw vegan hair shampoo. Surely, I can not be the only one who has attempted to do this.

I need a raw vegan unprocessed sudsing agent. I can not use Sodium Lareth Sulfate (SLS).

Ok, I finally found gold my friends. I will experiment with my new found knowledge and then share with you the recipe for raw vegan shampoo after I have tested it on myself.

No, but a foaming action isn't needed to get clean. You could use slippery elm, soaked overnight to get a shampoo-like feel.

Ok folks, I have ordered everything I need to make this raw shampoo. It will be a 100% raw fruitarian shampoo with living enzymes. It has a natural sudsing agent (pods from a tree that I will grind into a powder), so it will foam up just like store bought shampoos, but with out the (SLS). The only down side to my recipe will be that it is not going to be cheap. This is possibly a contributing factor as to why they aren't making it commercially now. However, my first goal is just to come up with a working recipe.

I will need to perfect the recipe and be my own guinea pig. Only after I have perfected it, will I share the recipe.

I already have a recipe for an awesome raw fruitarian hair conditioner that is out of this world. It is more workable than just straight extra virgin coconut oil. It has a nice carrier and it is also 100% raw and fruitarian.

The reason I am coming up with these alternative products is because I prefer to make my own hair care products. Vegan hair care products are generally not 100% raw and you have to trust that the manufacturer is telling the truth. By making your own hair care products, you know exactly what is going into it.

The theory is this, if it is not healthy to eat, then it is not healthy to put in your hair.

Out of curiousity, why do you want to eat your shampoo?

Thanks for taking the time out to reply to my thread. I sure do appreciate it. I do not want to consume the shampoo. The theory is that if it is safe enough to eat, then it must be safe for your hair.

Actually that's not necessarily true...I mean yes it will be ok for your hair, but there are raw fruitarian ingrediants that can be irritating to your scalp and should not be used(for example lemon or lime is not good for the scalp). You should check that out and make sure the ingredients are non-irritating.

This is a really cool idea! It makes sense that something good for you, would be good for your hair too. All those happy little enzymes and such. I'm wondering though, will you have to mix up a new batch of this everytime you need some shampoo, or will it keep for awhile in the fridge? Maybe thats part of the reason why there isnt something that is more main stream, to difficult to keep it from spoiling. Anyways, good luck with your endeavours. :bobo:

Unfortunately, as with most raw food recipes, they do spoil fairly quick. The conditioner has raw thai coconut fruit in it, when after blended, will last for maybe a week. You could make several batches in small individual packs and freeze them though. I have a batch in the fridge now. I still need to make alterations. I put a little too much cold-pressed coconut oil in the mixture.

You are correct in that no foaming action is necessary. However, I have chosen to go with an ingredient that acts as a natural sudsing agent.

In regards to your inquiry in another message, I have returned to haute cuisine (fancy prepared raw food meals). I really enjoy the creativity and it just allows me to enjoy so much more variety.

You mentioned going raw for a month long cleanse. I think that is a great idea. Maybe you might decide to just go raw permanently. I still do what I refer to as my "fruitarian fast" where I eat strictly raw fruits.

Well...that wasn't really "my view", I just trying to help by letting you know to be careful what ingredients you use. You don't need to act like I was being rude or something.

Being bald, I need something to stimulate and cleanse my scalp. Can you create a product for me, SW?

Well, this shampoo project of mine became a little more involved than I thought. I decided to put it on hold for a while. However, I will say this in regards to a shampoo that encourages hair growth. I would basically add a "Red Savina" (the hottest variety of habanero chiles) to my Vita-Mix before I complete the final blending process. This would definitely stimulate your scalp. You would have to take caution not to get it in your eyes though as it would burn.

I don't know whether this is true or not, but I hear that mashed bannanas and mashed avocados make excellent conditioners.

SW, Can you share your conditioner recipe?

Also, if anyonehas any experience with the following, used as ingredients in a shampoo/hair rinse, I'd love to hear what you know before I waste a lot of time experimenting. My goal is to come up with something that will truly "clean" the scalp and hair. Not real concerned with scalp stimulation persoanlly. I feel I can get this through brushing or just rubbing "shampoo" into scalp. Also, it doesn't have to be edible or even fun. Mostly just effective.

Ingredients I'm curious about:

Aloe (either gel or juice)
Tea Tree Oil (I've heard it's antibacterial/antifungal)
Vinegar (what does it provide? Is it just a preservative?)

I wash my hair with 2 mashed avocados and do a "deep condioning" treatment with coconut milk once or twice per week. I squeeze lemon juice over my entire hair and scalp once or twice per month. It works better for me than any shampoo or conditoner that I've tried. :sunny:

ETA: Sometimes I also use 2 tablespoons of honey mixed with heated evian water and use that as a leave-in.

Note: Make sure that the honey is disolved completely or it will make your hair hard.

Also feel free to pm me SamuelWilson, I have allot of shampoo / conditioner recipes for hair. :)

you use honey? being vegan i don't use honey for anything. i saw a documentary the other day how honey is usually produced  here is a link (http://www.vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm) to a page that also describes it a bit, starting at "the enslavement of bees".
