Too bad that was such short notice -- I haven't been to that particular theatre, but I support the theatres closer to me pretty frequently. (Too frequently for my budget, actually). I wouldn't mind hearing about upcoming shows, though. Santa Monica isn't far from here at all.
mskedi- i'll keep you posted! but the website lists all the kinda of information too.. probably much more eloquently than i ever could..! www.santamonicaplayhouse.com again.. not many people have heard of us, but we've been around for a good 40 years or so.. (i haven't been personally, but the theatre has..)
epski - thanks! is $10 or $15 too much? we'd really like to get people in there!
but, obviously, no pressure. :)
oh! to know about other shows playing, other than the two or three advertised on the title page, just click on "40th anniversary Special Events"..!
thanks!
Okay, the So Ca people might get a kick out of this.
Some friends of friends are out visiting from IL and they had a California tourist guide that suggested they have a picnic in Echo Park! Jeez... does it also recommend a leisurely stroll through South Central?

Yeah. I'm super-broke right now. Spent too much time working independently and volunteering for the last two years, and not enough time earning money. I'm just now getting caught up again, but I'm still a month late on some bills, so no spending money on non-essentials right now. :(
I hope it goes great, though.

Depends on where they're from... Heh.
...And if they're packing heat.
I suppose if they wanted something to talk about when they got home... Of course, I could just let them walk around the neighborhood I teach in and they wouldn't have to drive all the way out there. :)

Future Angelena checking in. I was out there applying for a job a couple of weeks ago, and I'm head-over-heels in love with the place. The smog, sun, and lack of public transportation are going to take getting used to, but I cannot wait to get out of the Rotten Apple, er, NYC.
The coffee shop in the hotel I stayed at (Best Western on Franklin Ave in Hollywood, about a block east of the 101) had amazing vegan huevos ranchereos (guac instead of sour cream, tofu instead of egg, and soy chorizo). The local supermarket carried my favorite Avalon Organics shampoo, for about two dollars cheaper than in New York.
Hopefully I'll get hired soon.
That hotel was the site of several scenes from "Swingers," FYI. It's a cool place, even without that claim to fame.
What kind of job are you looking for, and do you think you'll end up in Hollyweird?
I'm about five minutes from the coffee shop, FYI.

Great crowd, great jukebox, too.
I loved that part of town and plan to look for a place there. From a resident's perspective, how do you like it?
The job application process was for LAPD (currently I'm NYPD). I've been given a provisional offer of employment; if all goes as expected, now it's just a waiting game while they finish processing my paperwork.

Sweet, a cop! Yeah, the job market for police officers appears to be hot out here, and the pay isn't too bad either. You just couldn't wait to work with Bratton (sp?) again, could you? :)
It's a hip, young Hollywood kind of area. You might want to live more toward Silverlake, but the best place to check out rentals is www.westsiderentals.com
FW: "PLEASE HELP PROTECT RUNYON CANYON!!!
PLEASE come to the only public meeting regarding important park issues below:
THURSDAY JUNE 12TH - 6:30-8:30 PM
Gardner Street Elementary School Auditorium
7450 Hawthorn Ave (between Hollywood & Sunset, between Fairfax & La Brea)
I am writing to tell you about a serious threat to the wonderful urban oasis, Runyon Canyon. The city of Los Angeles has decided that the best way to spend the million dollars that they have earmarked for parks and recreation is to pave over a large portion of the park to make parking lots! And to take away the dog walking privileges in the park. WE MUST UNITE TO STOP THEM!!!
Here is why these are horrible ideas. First, Los Angeles has PLENTY of concrete and we need all the greenery we can get to keep our air as breathable as possible, and to maintain some beauty. The so-called reason this is being proposed is that a small but wealthy, vocal group of
residents on Vista Street don't like people parking in their neighborhood to go to the park. What they don't realise is that putting in parking lots will INCREASE congestion, pollution, noise and attract crime, gangs, drugs and violence to the park. Studies have shown that whenever you add parking lots to a recreational facility, the above happens. Furthermore, Runyon Canyon is already a small park, and this will only make it smaller. They are intending to take area that is currently a dog-free children's play area.
The other planned "improvement" is the removal of the off-leash privileges. Runyon Canyon is the ONLY park in Los Angeles where you can WALK your dog off leash. It is a WONDERFUL and BEAUTIFUL haven for people and dogs to spend time in nature, to run and sniff and play with each other (sometimes the people, sometimes the dogs). There are LOTS and LOTS of areas where dogs have to be on leash (Griffith Park, Franklin Canyon, Will Rogers Park, Fryer Canyon, Tree People, Temescal Canyon - to name a few) but this is the ONLY place they're allowed to run free. There are off leash dog runs, but those are places one simply must stand around while one's dog plays, you cannot walk around with your dog. Even for people who don't own dogs, this aspect of Runyon Canyon is a treasure because it allows people who can't own dogs to go play with them and be around them. (Studies have shown that dogs decrease stress and all sorts of other wonderful things.)
One reason this is happening is that the city has a $1,000,000 grant to use for park improvements which will expire this year. They "need" to spend the money. Can't we think of better improvements, REAL improvements, besides taking away some of the beauty we have?
PLEASE PLEASE COME MAKE SURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD. The MOST important
thing is the NUMBER of bodies who show up. Be there and be counted.
THANK YOU!!!"
epski--
That meeting's during my school's graduation ceremony, otherwise I'd be there. I'd be happy to write, though, if you tell me who to write to. At the least I'm going to copy your post and send it to my non-teacher friends -- I know at least a few who will go if they're able on short notice. (Unfortunately, most the people I know who would go teach with me. Figures). Thanks for passing along the info! :)
Mskedi
I don't know who to write to, either, unfortunately. Maybe after the meeting I'll have more information. That e-mail was forwarded to me by someone else.
Well, I found a hotline number for the people who are helping organize the meeting, but no address. I'll call them after dance class.
It's the Hollywood Council Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and the number is (323)462-1514 or (toll-free) (866)LA HELPS. If I get the address from them later tonight, I'll post it. Chances are they'll be closed & I'll have to get it tomorrow, though. Again, thanks for bringing this up. :)
Looking to see if any you Cali people live behind the Orange Curtain and go to Dietrich Coffee houses on Fridays or Saturdays to get some tunes?
I like to play with my pastels and do some reading and conversation.

Hollywood here. Sorry.
Looks like I have to work Thursday night, too, but my wife will go to the meeting in my stead.
Toto--
I didn't know the O.C. people referred to it as being behind the Orange Curtain as well! It's used pretty derogatorily here. :)
I'm on the L.A. side of the border betwen L.A. & O.C., so I'm over there a bit, and while I've heard about Dietrichs, I haven't been. I frequent some jazz clubs in O.C., though.
epski,
Ends up I had the wrong branch of the Hollywood Neighborhood Council -- the number is (323)883-0878 and no one was there when I called tonight. The lady from the wrong branch was very nice, though, and was happy to hear that people are interested in the meeting & in writing letters. :)

Hey Toto,
nice to see you in this thread. I'm in chilly No. Cal. But we can have online conversation. :)
Check out the Raw Food thread (http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6479) some time, I know you're into raw too. Straw bale houses rule too!

Toto, what is the other vegan restaurant in Irvine?
Hmmm. Wish that wasn't so far just for dinner.
I still haven't made it down there yet, but I plan to sometime this summer. What's the other vegan restaurant?
